Bumping Your Bump

So I've always been prone to walking into things, but this is the first time I've taken a furniture corner to the bump. It wasn't anything crazy, but it left a mark.

DH jumped on the "we need to go in and get it checked" bandwagon within seconds. But that just seems silly, she's still kicking. How big a bump to the your baby bump would scare you? I mean, they are bound to get bumped a bit, right?

  • I'll definitely keep an eye out for anything strange. But yeah, no symptoms other than a red mark.

  • I think you're probably ok, but I don't know how hard you took the bump or how much stomach fluff you have for added cushion (i.e. I would be totally fine haha). Maybe call the nurse line?

  • At 20 weeks, I took a pretty big fall and hit my belly in the process of going down. I could still feel her moving in there so I waited til the next day and called my OB. They said that unless there is cramping, bleeding, or no movement for more than a day, everything is fine. All that amniotic fluid really protects the baby from that type of thing!

  • I've read that the only thing to truly worry about is "blunt force trauma" to the abdomen. Or anything that causes cramping, bleeding, or leaking fluid. Baby is really cushioned in there, but I totally understand feeling a little concerned. I don't think this is ER-worthy. Maybe a call to the doc tomorrow to put your mind at ease?

  • My DH would probably say the same thing but if I wasn't in any pain and was still feeling the same amount of movement I don't think I'd go in. I also have a toddler (1 1/2 yr old) so this bump has taken quite a few more "bumps" than with my first. My midwife has seen me carry our toddler and her snuggle up on my belly/chest and has said as long as I'm comfortable, not straining, and just doing what I always do that it's ok.

I think baby is pretty protected in there, maybe even more so than we give them credit for! I'd be more worried if you fell down or something hit you hard (as opposed to bumping into something) because I know it is possible to dislodge the placenta. If you're nervous about it you can always call the nurse line!

  • I probably would not get it checked out unless I had cramping or bleeding.  DS1 likes to run up and headbutt my belly all the time. My OB said that its nothing to worry about less I have other symptoms.
I'm glad my kid isn't the only one who does this...

OP, like pp have said, you are probably fine.  But, if you are worried, call the nurses line to check.

  • Thanks ladies, you confirmed my original thought. We don't have a nurse line, I'd have to go into L&D and that just felt crazy.

  • I seriously forget that my bump is there half the time. I bump it on everything. Counters, doors, furniture, other people. Last time it wasnt so bad but now I have toddler to add to that mix. And she's too little to understand that theres a baby in there and to be careful.

Like PPs said, they're really protected in there and I wouldnt worry too much unless it was something very significant. Like falling down the stairs or something.
