Well, that didn't go well (hysteroscopy update)

I went in to my RE's office today for a hysteroscopy. He didn't even get a chance to do everything he planned on doing (SIS, etc.) because his view of my uterus was obscured by retained tissue. So it looks like I'll be going in for a repeat D&C. F*ck me. I guess this explains why my betas took so long to drop.

The RE also saw what he believes to be an endometrioma (i.e., an endometriosis cyst) on my right ovary. He said we'll need to keep an eye on it, but his immediate concern is getting the retained tissue out of my uterus to prevent scarring.

So we're benched again. Any input from ladies who had retained tissue would be much appreciated. Also, any endo ladies who have input to share before I fall down the Google rabbit hole? @mrsG80inTN? @megrae12? @bethkate2? I'm feeling rather overwhelmed.

First and foremost I am so, so sorry you have to deal with this girl! How was your first AF? Was it heavier or lighter than "normal" i.e. pre-pregnancy?

This is my RT experience: I had my D&C May 2nd and my beta levels were not monitored, but AF arrived exactly 28 days later. On June 3rd I went back for a hysteroscopy and retained tissue was found. My RE suggested I either wait it out three months and come back for another hysteroscopy to be sure it cleared or come back in a month, while on bcp, and get an operative hysteroscopy so she could actually see what she was doing and remove the retained tissue. (Since D&C is done blindly) At this point I was already considering a new RE so we got a second opinion who thought it'd probably clear itself with my next cycle since my first had been rather light in comparison to my pre-pregnancy cycles. Sure enough, my next cycle was the cycle of death and I was 99% sure I passed the tissue because it was so heavy and clotty. A follow up ultrasound revealed I was right and we were able to move forward with TTC/treatments.

Again, just my experience, but I definitely understand wanting to avoid scarring. I was all set to have the operative hysteroscopy because I was so scared about scarring as well. Maybe you could ask your doc about an operative hysteroscopy instead of a D&C so he could be 100% sure that everything was removed? What ever happens, sending you lots of positive vibes. AF was lighter than usual. Since it stopped, I've also had pink CM a few times when I wiped. Which was another clue something was wrong.

First, I'm sorry that things didn't go well. It sucks. And I'm sorry about the retained tissue. Crap crap crap. I was really hoping your update would be good.

As for endometriosis, we can chat for sure. My endometriosis was likely an original factor in limiting our pregnancy chances (read none in 3.5 years until we had the removal surgery). I had severe endo, but certainly not as severe as some I've heard about. The good news (and I use that term lightly) is that you CAN get pregnant so it's likely your endometriosis isn't causing a problem with you getting pregnant. My RE didn't seem to think that my endo returning (based on u/s 2 weeks ago) that it was cause for concern, but you never really know. I have friends who have managed endo completely with diet (gluten and dairy free). I read some of this book, "Endometriosis: the complete reference for taking charge of your health" and it provided some good info.

@BookishMomma Hmmm well, you could always chance letting another cycle come to see if you end up passing it on your own like mine ended up doing. Either way I would definitely ask about the operative hysteroscopy over the D&C so you don't have to chance them not getting everything again. This process sucks enough without further complications.

I will definitely ask about the operative hysteroscopy. Honestly, that might have been what he was referring to, anyway. I will ask about it. I was sort of in shock when he showed me all the stuff blocking up my uterus. I might have to wait until after my next AF to schedule the surgery anyway. If that's the case, it can't hurt to ask them to check things out after AF and see if the tissue goes away on its own.

I am so sorry. That really sucks!

I recently had to have a second D&C due to retained tissue. We found out about the retained tissue because I was still bleeding and my HcG numbers were still really high, so they did an ultrasound. We first tried Cytotec but that didn't work. With the second D&C they did a hysteroscopy at the same time so she could see where the retained tissue was. My doctor told me that I had enough retained tissue to fill her hand and she said it was really stuck on my uterine wall and she had to use a tool they use to remove fibroids to remove it. I had a lot of bleeding that day and passed some more tissue and clots over the next few days. At my follow up appointment my doctor advised me to go on the pill for two cycles to help my uterus heal and for my lining to build back up. She warned me about the possibility of scarring and told me to call her if my periods didn't return or if they were very light.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with this. ((Hugs))

Hey love. I'm so sorry about the retained tissue, etc. That sucks major monkey balls.

As far as endo goes, did your RE mention a lap? If it were me, I would look into it. It would tell your how severe it is, he can remove it, and he can see where it's located. Endo is progressive, so if he can remove some, it can help or give you "extra" time. I would say if he is going to do the operative hysteroscopy, you can just add in the lap. Does any of that make sense?

I'm so sorry your dealing with this.

I had retained tissue but didn't know about it until I started bleeding out. My loss was further along so the amount was probably more significant which is why I ended up having such a huge bleed. I had an emergency d&c at 1 am to stop it and that's what's believed to have caused my uterine scarring.

So, because of my own history (I'm sorry I really don't want to scare you) I would really push for D&C with scope. Maybe have it done via hysteroscopy if they can so they can be very aware of what they are removing without necessarily having to be aggressive about it.

I absolutely hate this for you. I also had retained tissue after my first miscarriage which wasn't found until 5 weeks after my d&c. My numbers plateaued at 100 so I knew something was up. After it was removed my numbers dropped immediately. I am so f'n sorry this happened. Thank goodness you scheduled the HSG!
