Cloth Diapering

White cloth diapers?

Hello, I am newly pregnant with our first, planning on CDing. Forgive me if this is a silly question, are white cloth diapers a good idea or a bad idea? I will do mostly prints and bright colors, but would you recommend a few white ones? I figured they wouldn't show through light colored clothing. But I can also see them looking stained/dingy before very long. Not necessary, or good to have a few?

Re: White cloth diapers?

  • Each to his own with this. I have both white/light colored CD's as well as highly patterned and bright CD's. I just try to coordinate the CD with the outfit when I can. At the very least the white ones look like a sposie for the non-CD'er. They do not get dingy, PUL does not discolor.

  • I think that white are a great idea, but not many people agree with me. ( not because they get dingy or anything, they just prefer colors and prints)

  • I don't like white ones because I tend to miss them occasionally when I pull the covers and pockets out of the wash, before I dry inserts. It's not a huge deal, but it wears them out faster.

  • I don't mind a white cover, but the only time I really worried about it was his baptism. Otherwise I like whatever gets pulled out 1st, unless I have him pantsless with a cute cover to match his shirt.

I have a white AC cover and a BG noodle that is like a cream colour. I purposely bought them for when she wears white pants. I've had no issues at all with them getting dirty or dingy looking. My white cover is still bright white. They make the materials to be able to withstand quite a bit, knowing what they will be used for.

  • I have a few white ones and ime they don't really get dingy. But I don't feel like I need them for certain outfits, either.

  • I only own white/cream colored diapers because its a color sold in my favorite diaper.  Why have white when there are so many amazing colors and prints!??  I've never cared about what diaper my son is wearing in relation to his outfit.

Just FYI, white absolutely shows through light colored clothing. Beige is ideal if you really want to 'hide' a diaper. Pale yellow would be a good choice also.

(I speak from experience as an RN who had to wear white scrub pants for two years ;) )

  • I have a few. When I first started buying, I thought I'd like the clean look of white. I use the white pockets as much as any other color. She never wears white pants. And They don't look dingy. She never wears her white covers though.

  • I had 1 white cover in the event that LO wears white/light pants.  However it shrunk really bad b/c it went through the dryer like previous posters said.  The diaper in general was not stained only a little bit of the trim around the leg holes (from newborn poo).
  • I have a handful of lighter colored diapers (yellow, white, lavender, mint).  One did get stained by spaghetti sauce once.  But after a few washes it was as good as new.

I like having a one white diaper in my stash.  And with my daughter I like having a good variety of colors to put under dresses.

  • Okay, I must be the lone person who managed to screw up a white diaper. We have two, and DS was wearing one of them when he had a rather runny poo. It soaked through the fleece, around the insert, and into the back of the PUL. It shows through the front as a greyish stain. This happened over a year ago, and the stain has not noticeably lightened. However, this could have happened with any color diaper; it's just Murphy's law that it happened on a white one at my house.

  • Thanks for the replies, I think I'll get one, though it will probably be the last one I choose
