Trying to Get Pregnant

PCOS

I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) when I was 22, now I am 27 and my hubs and I are TTC. I was wondering how long those of you with PCOS waiting until you got medical/drug help to conceive.

The doc I had last year said she would put me on metphornin (sp?) as soon as we were ready to try. Well that doc moved :,( and now my new one said not to worry and to try for a year before he would put me in anything.

I am not over weight, I do have irregular periods (they are unpredictable), and they range from being so heavy I need two pads and a tampon (basically just sit on the potty for two hours honestly) or only lasting two days and needing a liner.

Advise please :)

Re: PCOS

  • If you're not currently temping and charting, you should start. It will help you know if/when you ovulate and if/when you need to go to the doctor it's just that much more information you alraedy have.

I have no experience, so I have no idea about the metformin, but I know there are plenty of ladies here that can help you with that.

  • How do you temp and chart? I have an ap where I log periods, got it to help with the PCOS and it also says when the bet time to conceive is... Is that what you mean by charting?

Ditto what Elly just said about temping being your first step. I have pcos and I would argue that temping is even MORE important for us because our ovulation can be so irregular.

I confirmed through several cycles of temping that I was not ovulating before I sought help from my doctor. She diagnosed me with pcos and I went on Metformin, which helped me to start ovulating. The great thing about temping is that it will help you know what is going on. You may discover from temping that you are ovulating and don't need any drugs or assistance to get pregnant.

  • I also have PCOS.  I went off birth control and went almost 6 months without a period or ovulating.  If that happens - seek medical advice.

To answer your question - I would not wait an entire year to try metformin.  It takes awhile to amp up the dosage - and after I reached 2000mg/day - my body began ovulating.  Everyone is so different, so it's hard to say how your body will react or what it will need.

Start by temping and see what kind of cycles you actually have.

    Good luck!

  • I haven't been on BC for three years now, it causes major headaches and nasuia, etc.

I am picking up a BBT today and have downloaded fertility friend
  • I personally waited about 4 months of no period and no ovulation (without medication) before my OB/GYN said that she couldn't help me anymore and sent me to a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE). Only you can make the decision of when the right time is. That being said, if you are at least getting periods on your own I would suggest a few months of temping and charting (looks like you already plan to start that) before going in to a RE. Personally, already having a PCOS diagnosis would make me wait less than a year before seeking help from a RE.
