Emergency 1st Ultrasound

I had horrible lower back pain last week followed by red spotting on Friday and Saturday. Sunday morning I was bleeding bright red. The-on call doctor said the normal "not to go to the ER unless I was filling a pad an hour".  I was able to get in for a physical examination, ultrasound and bloodwork at 6w5d (yesterday). We were able to see a good looking baby! Measuring 6 weeks (I know I ovulated late, so that is right on track with my charting), with a heart rate of 110. hCG level is in the 40,000 range.

We did find an empty gestational sac as well. Possible vanishing twin that could have caused my bleeding. They couldn't find anything else that would have caused the bleeding.

I did find out that I am Rh-Negative so I get to go get a fun shot tomorrow morning. This is my first pregnancy so I have definitely been freaking out and googling WAY too much! I am just happy that I have one healthy looking baby! FX that everything remains the same!

  • I also had a vanishing twin when I was pregnant with my son. It's actually extremely common, 1 in 8 pregnancies, most people just don't know because they usually don't have u/s that early.

I'm glad the bleeding doesn't seem to have been serious though.

I also had the rhogam shot (I think only twice though) and it makes you sore for a few days after with a knot in your arm. Feels more like someone punched you. Fun right?
  • I'm sorry to hear about the vanishing twin. I'm glad to hear you have a healthy baby in there! Sorry you've had a scare, FX that all continues to look well.
  • Sorry that you had a scare but glad everything was ok!

Sorry about the vanishing twin - but glad you saw a healthy little one in there!  I'm Rh-negative too.  It's not a huge deal.  The way I understand it is if you are RH-negative and baby has a different blood type than you do and blood crosses the placental barrier, then your body can build antibodies which will attack an embryo the next time you get pregnant.  The blood doesn't always cross - my great-grandmother was O-neg and 5 kids, but it is a possibility.  Anyhow, they give you a shot around 28 weeks and another after you give birth to help your body from creating the antibodies so you can have a healthy pregnancy later.

    Edited for spelling.

  • Glad all looks well and sorry about the twin. I am Rh Negative and you will have to get a shot anytime there is bleeding. With my last pregnancy I had only two, one around 20 weeks and one after I gave birth. Good news if your baby is also negative you won't need a shot after birth. So there's that!
