Leaking breast milk

I know leaking the pre-breast milk is normal, so I am not worried. But I am a little worried about the whole boob stain in public. Until today, it was only at night and just a little bit. Just looked down and have some in the middle of the day. Luckily I am at home (and in bang around clothes). So a couple questions.

1.) will it ruin my bras? It seems to have ruined a tshirt I wore last week to bed
2.) if it is just a little bit, might I leak through my bra?
3.) should I just suck it up and buy nipple pads? It is infrequent... But leaking in front of a room full of teenage boys at summer school sounds TERRIBLE!

Re: Leaking breast milk

  • If you're concerned, pick up some breast pads.

It shouldn't ruin your clothes. If a stain is visible after washing, though, letting your shirt sit in the sun for a few minutes should fade it. :)

  • ITA with PurpleHippo - since you're teaching in front of a room of high school kids, it sounds like it might be worth it to invest in some reuseable ones.

  • I use the really thin panty liners, cut in half when I am just leaking a little

I haven't notice it stain my bras though either
  • When does this start happening, y'all?

Do you get any warning before it starts? Because my boobs feel completely normal...so I'm not anticipating this happening anytime soon.

  • I never had warning. I always had it at night when I laid on my side & had pressure on my boobs.

I never leaked through pregnancy. It's an individual thing how much and when it starts. I can tell I have colostrum in there already just by looking at my nipples but I don't foresee any leakage this time around either (though I may be wrong).

  • Mine started at like 16 weeks. It's infrequent, but happens randomly out of the blue and usually at inopportune times. And yes, I have had it leak through my bra, so I'd wear some pads. I second @PurpleHippo19‌ on the washable cotton ones, because wasting disposables on days they behave seems silly.

  • Me personally I leaked in the beginning but I ALWAYS leak even not pregnant.

It stopped at 10 weeks and came back 2 weeks ago (26 weeks), I don't think I leak a lot. It has given my shirt a spot 2x and other than that is seems just pressured
  • @vrj0522‌ any correlation that you know of between not leaking and poor breast milk production? May be a dumb question. Just really wanting breastfeeding to work.

I did have production issues with DS; however, I don't think that it's necessarily an indication of anything. I think that if you are leaking while pregnant, you most likely won't have production issues. However, I don't think that not leaking means that you will.

  • I also wanted to add that I am doing things differently with this baby. I am taking a breastfeeding class and will be taking supplements to increase my milk production from the get go. While I read a little about breastfeeding before baby, my focus was more around how to do it and I didn't really learn about how to help my milk production until I was in the situation. I am taking a more proactive approach this time in hopes that it can work better for us. So that's my advice to you, if you are worried about having enough milk, make sure that you are preparing yourself... reading, class, etc, so that you can set yourself for success as best as possible.

  • Thank you all! I think the cotton reusable ones sound perfect! Anyone know where I can pick them up? @PurpleHippo19‌ ?

Also, no warning just there. At first just at night but today just hanging out apparently! I have heard no correlation to production issues as other women said. @DaniGrace89‌

  • @MrsSarahRenee‌ I saw the cotton reusable ones at babies r us yesterday. I got the velvety Bamboobies pads from amazon (they're at babies r us as well) and they've been nice for leaking colostrum AND for a little protection for sore and sensitive nipples. Highly recommend.
