"On the night that you were born" by Nancy Tillman and two of the others in the series,
"Sleep train, Dream train" - love that one;
A few by Pete Yarrow ( from Peter Paul and Mary) ;
The velveteen rabbit
I haven't bought any for this poor second child but my favorites from DD are Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You, and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.
My favorites are "Moo, Baa, La La La", "You are my I Love You", and "Big Red Barn". I prefer books that rhyme, and I absolutely hate Eric Carle books (Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear, From Head to Toe)--incredibly boring to read. (His books are repetitive to begin with, and then add on that your child wants you to read them a million times, and you'll want to shoot yourself. I hide those from DS.)

"Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is a little like expecting the bull not to attack you because you are a vegetarian." --Dennis Wholey
Corduroy, Little Critter (Kohl's has the stuffed animals and some of the hardcover books for $5 each - Kohl's Cares Promotion), Madeline, The Little Engine That Could, Goodnight Moon, Very Hungry Caterpillar, Curious George, Little Miss/Little Mr.
We bought a bunch of touch and feel books, books with puppets, and holiday books (Thanksgiving, Christmas). We also purchased books that have pictures of "real things", so pictures of actual animals, other babies, trucks, etc, versus illustrations.
Check out Savers or Good Will for books, we found ones that were brand new and very inexpensive. Marshall's and TJ Maxx also have great deals on books.
I went to my parent's house and cleaned out all of the books that my siblings and I had when we were kids. There were a lot of chapter books but we got some Mercer Mayer and Eric Carle books as well. I got a couple at my first shower (Dragons Love Tacos is a newer one that is super cute). My dad's side of the family is throwing me an exclusively books-only shower this week so I am excited to see what I get from that. I was a HUGE reader as a child so I want baby to have a big library :-) I am still hoping for Madeline and Amelia Bedelia books from the shower.

I feel like that makes me a terrible mom. I have been given two that I can remember. One is Goodnight Moon and another someone gave to me on Father's Day. I can't remember the title of that one, but it's about celebrating Father's Day.
I have storage bins full of books from when I was younger and I really need to go through them. We haven't bought any books yet, but we've received a few Dr. Seuss books and some others at our shower.
We have a bunch ofDr. Seuss books we found at a consignment shop - all were essentially brand new. We also have picked up some of the little blue truck books and some random books they had at B&N in Spanish. DH can translate the English books to Spanish but we figured it might be easier to have a few in Spanish for when he just wants an easy read. The little one's bookshelf is pretty full but I'm sure we'll pick up a few more before he gets here!
I bought several Mercer Mayer books and plan to complete that collection, Bernstein bears, the velveteen rabbit, I really want to buy some Fragel Rock if I can find them!
We got a bunch at our shower, and every time I go to Costco I look through the baby books, and often pick up one or 2.
At Costco I bought some really nice books with collections of stories, like Mother Goose and Faiy Tales, as well as some touch and feel books.
From the shower I am most excited about "Where the Wild Things Are," "The Giving Tree," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," "5 Little Monkeys," and "Puff the Magic Dragon"
I know that we have a ton of Bernstein Bears books from when I was a kid, so I may have my parents find those in the attic and ship them to me.
DH plans to just read out loud to baby girl whatever he happens to be reading at the time (and oh my goodness his book choices will put me to sleep, he actually likes to read about economics for fun).
We have a lot and we have been getting a lot of books. Some are cloth or board books and we will use those first, but we all have all of DH's books from when he was a kind and all of mine. DH and I both had healthy collections of the serendipity and little miss/mr books, tons of dr Seuss, the berenstain bears take along library, the marina series, Anne of green gables series, the little house on the prairie and more from our old books.
Purchased specifically for baby by us or others: Ben and Lucy play pond hockey, he very hungry caterpillar, you are my I love you, guess how much I love you, it's time to sleep my love, somebunny loves you, pat the bunny, baby touch and feel animals, the going to bed book, taggies who do you see, moo baa la la la, the paper bag princess, Mortimer, hockey colors, a Richard scarry collection and little bunny. She has a few repeats of books that DH and I have, but it is good because these copies are board books and ours were not.
DH and I both were huge readers as children. We often buy books as gifts for one another and our families, so we hope to pass this tradition on. My mother has already been giving me books for baby at every holiday and I know it will continue once she is here.

This!!! I was singing the Fraggle Rock TV show song the other day, and my little sister had no idea what it was. My baby will KNOW the Fraggles!!
This is slightly off-topic, but I love this story, and maybe you can relate.
There was a Jim Henson exhibit at one of the Smithsonian exhibits a few years ago (probably 6-7) and I took the little kids that I nannied. There was a mini-documentary playing on a large screen, and about 30 people of all ages were sitting and quietly watching the documentary. When the Fraggle Rock era came on, the documentary played a bit of the theme song, and, without thinking about it at all, the 5 or so of us in the room in our early 30s CLAPPED ALONG with the song. It was hilarious because everyone else in the room was slightly startled, but then everyone laughed. I mean, how can you NOT clap along?! I definitely hope my son loves Fraggle Rock (and all Jim Henson, for that matter...The Dark Crystal is one of my absolute favorite movies!)
My shower was also book-themed....my mom paired books with all of the food and extras she did. It was awesome! There were things like Strega Nona pasta salad, Dragons Love Tacos bean dip, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom chicken and bacon bites, Water Water Everywhere water, If You Give a Dog a Donut donuts, Junk Food (Berenstain Bears), Hungry Caterpillar fruit kabobs. One of the games was a guessing game featuring Guess How Much I Love You. It was so well-thought out (and probably from Pinterest, too) and I loved it all! The greatest thing was adding all of those special books to baby's library...I'm putting a picture from the shower of each book's special part inside the cover of each book so we'll always remember.
I teach first grade and do book orders every month, so I've been building baby's library all year. He already has too many books to fit on his shelves!
I have a ton of books from my girls, but some of my faves for reading to them as babies.....
Mother goose nursery rhyme treasury
Sandra boynton books
These board books with puppets (In My Tree, In My Den, In my Pond, etc..there are a ton and were the basis of the girls first bday party they loved in my tree so much)
Touch and feel baby word books
@MAtoMEbride we LOVE the gossie and gertie books now! Ollie the stomper is probably our fave.
Our favorite was always the first Ollie book ... when he won't come out of the egg. "He rolls to the left. He rolls to the right. He won't come out!" I can't wait to read them again to Baby #2!!
I need to make a list and check out some book stores. We have a lot from my daughter but not many board books have survived- apparently those are super tasty to the dog.
I am an English teacher and the girls at work gave me a book shower, plus we are big readers, so we have accumulated a good bit of books. Here are the ones we have that I wouldn't skip if I was starting a library over: Corduroy, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Whistle for Willie, Good Night Moon, On the Night You Were Born, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, The Ugly Duckling, Olivia, The Rainbow Fish, Where the Wild Things Are, The Velveteen Rabbit *my favorite*, Go, Dog, Go *my husband's favorite*, Guess How Much I Love You, a few Shel Silverstein and a few Dr. Seuss.
My husband is working on his masters and currently reads his text books outloud for baby to hear, we plan on continuing to read her text books and chapter books as much as possible. Then as she gets a little bit bigger we will also read picture books and other story books. We are big readers in our house!
Re: What books have you bought for baby?
I love baby word books of any kind. We have a friend who gave us a set of baby bible story board books. Ds loves them.
