Getting LO to sleep

We had some success with CIO at night wakings. We are now trying it at bedtime bc LO will not go to sleep on her own and wants to be rocked to sleep, then she'd wake up when we moved her!

Has anyone had success with CIO at the beginning of nighttime routine? We took out checks because it was making it worse?

I feel like LO is also starting to get some seperation anxiety. When I leave the room and she sees I'm gone she'll start crying.

She is 7 months. I guess I'm just wondering if she is having seperation anxiety, if it'll make CIO worse? I have no clue, FTM here.

This sleep stuff is really stressful. :(

Re: Getting LO to sleep

  • Bed time was where we had the most success. She was crying every 45 minutes and wouldn't want to be put down. Now she's out as soon as she hits the mattress. We did CIO without checks

  • I think I need to stick with it. I hear her crying and I feel like I'm her ruining her life and damaging her, which I know is totally irrational.

  • Thanks, success stories help!

  • @ameegee‌ how long did it take to see results?

  • We've been doing CIO at night wakings too, but we still rock her to sleep at bed time & for naps. She doesn't wake up during the transfer though so we don't have that problem. Maybe I'm not much help. :/

Personally I'm fine with continuing to rock her til she's a year or so old, I think that will be a better transition point when now all the separation anxiety is starting, like you said. I tried breaking her of the rocking about a month ago & it didn't go that well, just made nap & bedtime 10x longer & harder for her & me, & she just didn't seem ready.
  • She was down to 10 minutes by day two and less than 2 minutes by day three. Kind of easy. But we have it harder with MOTN and naps. It's been about a month and bedtime is sooo much easier

@lifesaverz‌ I was just rocking her but she started waking up on transfer and not falling back to sleep. With every wake up. Now she falls back to sleep even when she wakes (which is most of the time)
  • Yeah, our LO wakes up usually with the transfer and is not happy about it!

  • We have an easier time with naps and MOTN, harder time at bedtime.

  • Yeah I was going to add that I'd probably base the decision on how difficult it is to get her down. Like for us rocking takes maybe 10-15 minutes & we don't have any transfer issues, so in that regard it's really easy for us. If it wasn't working anymore though or she was waking up with the transfer I would probably try CIO too. It does suck though, I feel for you OP! :( The MOTN CIO have been tough on me but last night she slept straight through!
  • At first I would go in fir checks and she'd stop crying and look up and smile and giggle! Then when I'd leave she's throw a bigger fit! So we took out checks. I think it'll work but it's so hard to hear her cry.

  • Thanks ladies, luckily I have DH who is keeping me strong, or I would have broken down and gone in on day 1!!!!

We had this exact same issue during sleep training. MOTN and naps resolved in a few days but LO would cry and scream only at bed time for 30-45 mins constantly. LO would start crying the instant she went into the crib only at bedtime. It was terrible and I wanted to give up.

It took almost 2 weeks of consistent no check-ins for bedtime to resolve and we kept moving her bedtime earlier and earlier which seemed to help. (Much longer than most books and my pedi said it would). But now she rarely cries unless she is overtired for bedtime. Have you tried putting her to bed earlier? It may be that she's overtired at that point even if it doesn't seem like it. Good luck!!

  • We did CIO without checks because it made him more upset at 5.5 months and LO was sleeping through the entire night on night four. Each night he cried less and less. Now, a month and a half later, he will sometimes fuss but it doesn't last more than a minute or two. It's so freeing to be able to transition him from awake to sleep with a little rocking/nursing and just be able to put him in his bed awake but drowsy rather than waiting until he was sound asleep before being able to leave. Hang in there...I know it's tough to listen to your baby cry.
