Moving supplies & boxes-best priced companies?

I know some of you have moved over the last year..

When H and I sold the condo in October, we used boxes that his Aunt and Uncle had in their basement from one of their various (like 5 moves) over the last ten years. We didn't have to buy any. Now we are looking at moving a 3 bedroom apartment and need advice on the best places to buy them at the best prices. Uhaul will buy back any boxes you don't use, but their boxes seem pricey. Thoughts?

  • Check out Craigslist! I was browsing the "free" tab and was surprised how many ads I saw for moving boxes!

Ah, great idea! The only thing that would skeeve me out is not knowing if they were coming from a home that could've had bugs/pests... Sorry, my OCD brain works this way. ;)

I bought boxes on Craigslist from our move from TX to TN. I bought from the super rich town to try to ensure they were clean, lol. There were so many options so that was how I chose who to buy from. But really, I doubt a UHaul warehouse is clean of bugs so it is what it is. We did buy some dish packing from UHaul.

We just moved in March.  I got a lot of my boxes from my local grocery store.  I called their produce department every couple of days and asked when the boxes would be available.  I found that the apple boxes were the best!!!

We then gave all of our boxes away on Craigslist.  I guess you don't know if the people had bugs, but I guess you could inspect them once you get them.

Agreed. I'm thinking more like cockroaches, though. Ugh.. shudders. Anyway, I'll check out CL @hmp1

  • Small grocery stores and liquor stores for free boxes.  Seriously, not need to spend money on boxes--I was loaded up with one stop at a liquor store (and had the honor of moving all my stuff in wine and vodka boxes).

And I'm with others on the bugs thing--if they could be in a shipment of Champagne, they're probably at the Uhaul warehouse.

I have definitely done the moves with vodka and beer boxes before, the problem is that the boxes tend to be tiny. That works really well for books and bathroom items, but not for bigger items like boxing up blankets/bedding supplies. Maybe I'll have to do 50/50 with free and some larger Uhaul boxes as well.

Not at all what you asked, but--we did vacuum storage bags for our  bedding the last time we moved.  It cost a bit more than boxes, but we continued to use the bags after the move for under-bed and deep storage.  Just a tip in case you would use them post-move, too!

  • We priced boxes at like 10 local stores while we were shopping for supplies and stuff - hands down, Home Depot was the cheapest.

    Another good resource: https://www.usedcardboardboxes.com

I have responded to about 25 ads on Craigslist and Freecycle, with NO luck. I swear, everyone in NJ must be moving this month. The vast majority of people never respond to me, and those that do respond tell me they've been picked up already.

  • Ditto on Home Depot. They were cheaper than UHaul....and I realized that after I had done a few trips to UHual.

I was going to say call the grocery and liquor stores. Tomato boxes are awesome for packing.
