Cloth Diapering

Never ending soap bubbles

I swear I've been washing the same diapers for like a week now.
I just got some new GMD prefolds in various sizes so I'm prepping them. I have one load with 18 organic cotton S and L prefolds and one load with 30 bamboo S, M, and L prefolds.
The first time I washed them I put 2 tbsp. original tide in the machine. I had to rinse a least 15 times (rinse+spin) before all the soap came out. So the next time I washed them I only used 1 tbsp. I'm one my 5th rinse now with no end in sight.
Wtf am I doing wrong? There's no way 1 tbsp is too much for diapers right?!
I have a LG HE FL, for reference.

Re: Never ending soap bubbles

  • Is it HE tide? Are you sure the bubbles aren't just agitation bubbles? That seems like a lot of rinses and I don't think you are using too much tide. Are they new prefolds? Are you rinsing in hot or warm, not cold?

  • If they are new, it's probably just from the prefolds. Cotton has oils on il that suds up for the first several washes. Or maybe agitation bubbles. Just wash with two rinses each time and check again at the end of prepping.

  • It is HE. I really think it's soap bubbles. It's almost like the whole water is white because there are sooooo many bubbles and they don't go away. Annnnd after I rinsed them 15+ times the water was basically clear.
They are new and I washed and rinsed all of those times on hot.
  • Yeah, but you could be washing out the oil. That happens when prepping prefolds.

  • *It was clear after all those rinses but then when I took them out, dried them, and put them back in for a second wash I was right back to bubble central.
  • Okay. Whew! I was like wtf is wrong with my machine. I have literally been washing/rinsing these two loads of diapers for a week.

  • I'd tend to agree with ITK that it's the cotton oils. Just wash and dry without the ton of rinses to prep....that's part of why prepping is needed.

  • ITK, yep yep yep. That's exactly what it looks like. Thank you!
  • This was a dozen new prefolds with NO soap added. Just the oils. No one warned me, and I was SO confused. image

  • Wow! I never noticed my prefolds doing this while prepping. Learn something new everyday! :)

They don't always, the first batch I had didn't. That only furthered my confusion.
