Re: GTKY 7/11!

  • 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Tell us about it. And, what did you end up being? :)

I can't really remember wanting to be anything as a kid.  I think on "career day" I usually went as an artist.  I don't think I was quick to choose a profession.  Which continued until after college.  I was a Theatre Major... but my only full time job has been in the recreation industry.  Mostly for different camps.  I love my job... but it is all consuming and kind of exhausting these days.  Sometimes I worry that I will never have any energy ever again....

    2. Favorite dessert is...?

Is ALL an answer?  Since I have been pregnant, all I want to eat is dessert.  Real food makes me puke... especially healthy foods.  Here is a short list of my favorites:  cupcakes, peach cobbler, cookies (no nuts!), sundaes, fruit snacks (not allowed in my house because I eat them by the boxful.), candy bars and more cookies.

    3. What's up this weekend?

A weekend off???!!!!????   This will be the first weekend I have had off (that didn't include travelling to see one set of parents or the other since) March. WHAT WILL WE DO WITH OURSELVES???

I think we may go see a movie tonight, we are going to go look at car seats tomorrow, and then Sunday we are going to do boring adult stuff:  grocery shopping, house cleaning, yard work (that I am excited about, because I usually miss it!).

And Monday... we get to see baby again for our anatomy scan!  I can hardly contain myself!

  • 1. In high school I had really good, engaged science teachers and though I wanted to be a biologist. That 'dream' quickly dissipated when my two years of high school chemistry was covered by the first test in chem101 in college! I ended up a journalism major, which I did nothing with except that writing is a huge part of all the jobs I've had and I'm good at it. I ended up being a project manager/outsourcing/account manager type and have worked at two of the big software companies for the bulk of my career (a.dobe and m.icrosoft). I did take two years off and had my own business as a professional organizer (!) which was fun! And I also taught Bikram hot yoga for a couple years :).

    2. This is hard to narrow down, but I'd say a killer ice cream sundae with hot fudge, candied hazelnuts, with say, salted caramel ice cream (1/2) and chocolate (1/2) topped with whipped cream and a cherry? Or, peach pie. Or any cake with good frosting. While I like cookies and sweet breads and stuff, I can pass those up more easily. Though the signature dish at my wife's coffeeshop is Coconut Bread, and it is epic.

Of course with GD, not a lot of sweets going on - but I do plan to click up the insulin pen this weekend for a piece of cake at our baby shower!!

    3. J's mom arrived from Arkansas last night and she is here for the weekend. As I mentioned in other posts, we are now having the shower at our house (instead of J's coffeeshop where we had our wedding and reception) due to a community event that weekend in that 'hood. Parking alone would have been a disaster. So, today and tomorrow is about hauling ballz on the house (been chipping away at it all week so we're in good shape!). Sunday is the shower, about 35-40 people are supposed to come and we're excited!!

Otherwise we're taking out mom's out to a nice dinner tonight (my mom lives here). Tomorrow is acupuncture, yoga and picking up the shower cake...then hanging out with MIL. Weather in Seattle right now is out of sight - 80's, blue skies, sun and 0% chance of rain! WTH! We'll take it!

  • So... my computer does this really weird thing that if a question ends in a smiley face, even if I answer the question it just adds another smiley face.....

Anywho, my actual answer to number 1:

I don't think I really wanted to be anything...  I had Peter Pan syndrome from the time I was born.  I wasn't really interested in growing up, and still don't really want to.  That's how I ended up working at camp.  Sure, I do a lot of really adult things... incident reports, overseeing the health and safety of hundreds of people at the same time, etc.... but I also get to do things like: make puppets out of paper bags, design scavenger hunts, sing songs, and talk about poop (from a scientific standpoint, of course.)

  • 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Tell us about it. And, what did you end up being? A Veterinarian or a teacher.  I ended up working in Operations and Event Management for a non-profit and later in Purchasing. Now I'm a SAHM looking to re-enter the work force.

    2. Favorite dessert is...?  Ice cream sundaes.  Hot fudge is definitely a must, whipped cream and maybe hot peanut butter sauce.

    3. What's up this weekend?
We drive back to the SF Bay Area from Las Vegas tomorrow. Its an 8+ hour drive - and a little daunting.  FX it all goes well.  Sunday we have a friends wedding in the Santa Cruz mountains. Today I'm taking the boys to an indoor play place and then hopefully meet EV at the hotel pool.  Tonight EV has another work event so I'll be home with the boys, and probably watching the Harry Potter marathon on tv.  There's a beautiful soaking tub in the hotel suite with large windows looking out on the city scape. I'd love a bubble bath with a book, and would consider my vacation complete if I can sneak it in...
  • 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to work with animals. Which I did, I was a vet assistant for about 2 years after going back to college for the 2nd time. But I decided to join the military after my wife and I married. Better pay, benefits, pension. Very happy I made that decision. I love serving my country.
    2. Favorite dessert is...?
    I love anything chocolate. Yum!
    3. What's up this weekend?
I'm not sure what's going on this weekend. My in-laws are heading home tomorrow and my Mom is still here for another week, so I imagine we will do something. Or I might be relaxing since today is our first IUI! Now the TWW begins!

  • 1. The only things I remember wanting to be was a doctor or a zoo vet. I quickly realized I don't have the stomach for either. Then I went to college and had no idea what wanted to do, so business technology seemed like a good idea. My undergraduate degree is in Management Information Systems, but an internship following my junior year made me realize that I didn't want to pursue a career in it. I was so close to graduating that I completed my degree, but then I completely switched gears and pursued a graduate degree in Women's Studies, which doesn't lend itself much to anything other than academia, which I also knew wasn't for me. So, after graduate school I thought I would end up in nonprofit because the reason I was drawn to WS in the first place was my desire to be an advocate for persons without privilege and without a voice. I ended up in child welfare (govt job), which has been a great fit. I started off as a front line worker and am now the director of the policy and program operations division in my agency.

    2. I heart desserts so much. I love a good chocolate chip cookie or a fudgy brownie with ice cream. Or an ice cream sundae with nuts. Or a fruit crisp with ice cream... All vegan, of course.

    3. I keep telling Z that this is the weekend of errands. So much to do around the house, plus we need to go get tv mounts, get my phone serviced, take things to storage, grocery shop, cook, etc. We are meeting a friend and his daughter for pizza after work today and I hope to get a family walk/run followed by brunch in on Sunday.

    Happy weekend peeps!

  • I wanted to be many things- When I was young a vet and then as I got older a park ranger and to live in the redwoods. Now I'm getting interviews for park ranger assistant work and am a wildland firefighter and live just a few hours from when I said.. I think I manifested some : )
Desert hmmmm?!!! Not a huge sweet person but homemade berry cobbler is pretty amazing. My weekend consists of a little nanny work while being in call for fires and hanging at the river with my brood : )

    1.  I wanted to be an inventor, or maybe go into advertising, but really I wanted to be a Shortstop for the NY Mets.  Sad.  I ended up initially as an athlete (hard to describe the situation, but let's just call it semi-semi-semi-pro) so I had to find a job that would support that and be flexible.  I ended up in Purchasing and then Project Management within Purchasing.

    2.  I never had a sweet tooth until the day Gabe was born.  Now I eat all the sweets.  Carrot cake with a good cream cheese frosting is always a winner, but I'm typically just as happy with a good ol' bag of gummy bears.

    3.  We don't have a lot of concrete plans for the weekend, but we have TONS of things that need to get done and have been lingering.  The one nice thing we're doing is that we both have massages scheduled for Sunday.  They are one after the other so we will trade off on Gabe-duty.

    Have a great weekend, everyone!

    1. I wanted to be a lawyer for as long as I can remember as a child, then starting in 6th grade I decided I wanted to get into politics and I used to tell everyone who would listen that I was going to be the first female president. Surprise, that didn't work out! Haha. My undergrad degree is in English with a double minor in pre-law and Secondary Ed. I was a paralegal after college initially and worked at a law firm then in the litigation dept of an insurance company. I hated that job, so I decided I wanted to go to grad school. I applied to 5 different programs, all very different just hoping it would give me some direction once I saw where I got in. Well, I got into all 5, so I picked the one that was the least expensive degree (I have $100k+ in undergrad loans), that also allowed me to complete the degree on 2 yrs while still working FT during the day. So my graduate degree is in Communications Management for Governmental & Social Policy. I thought I could perhaps still get into politics following grad school. Well, just as I started my grad program, I saw the job listing for the company I currently work for and couldn't ignore it. So, I started a new FT job one month before also starting a FT evening grad program. I started at my current company in Legal & Regulatory Affairs. Taking that job was the best thing I ever did. 5 years later, I have finished my masters (graduated three years ago), and I am still with that company, but have been promoted a few times and now I am the Asst Director of Operations & Compliance. I did eventually apply to law school three years ago, and I got in, but decided not to go. I bought an engagement ring instead. I wanted a wife and a family, and decided that I wanted law school for all the wrong reasons.

    2. I love dessert in general. Classic bakery birthday cake is an old favorite. Ice cream is also a big weakness of mine. I also can't say no to a soft sugar or shortbread cookie ever. Christmas cookies are dangerous in my house!

    3. My in laws are coming over at some point to visit Will. Otherwise, no concrete plans. I need to go to the bank, the grocery store... Oh and our birth announcements arrived so we have 150 envelopes to address.

I remember saying I wanted to be a teacher, but then I realized there was a lot more work involved and the pay sucked so I didn't go to college for anything.  I always knew I wanted to be a mom, so I haven't had much of a career just jobs over the years.
    2. Favorite dessert is...?
creme brule is my fav!  but i rarely have it.  i love a good banana split or right now I live in popsicles
    3. What's up this weekend?
I am flying solo with the girls this weekend.  My wife's birthday is Sunday and she has wanted to go camping for years and we just never end up going.  So she planned a 'dudes' weekend and is going camping.  She is super excited and already set up at the camp site.  I am happy for her, but tired just thinking about my weekend alone with the girls.  This evening I am heading to a friends house so the girls can play with her little boy, I don't have anything set in stone for Saturday but I am sure I will be napping anytime that I can!  Sunday G comes home and it is also the World Cup final, so we will watch the game together after she gets home from camping.

    1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Tell us about it. And, what did you end up being? There was the dentist stage (eww..can't imagine) and the teacher phase (I think because my mother and both grandmothers were teachers.)  In college it was nursing. After undergrad, I was a Child Life Specialist for 7y (play therapy/education for kids in the hospital) and then went to grad school for social work ended up being a medical social worker - which I love.

    2. Favorite dessert is...?Chocolate mousse. Yum. Or creme brulee.

    3. What's up this weekend? Working late tonight since L took the kids to see a movie. Might stop and get myself sushi for dinner since no one in my house will eat it besides me. :)  Tomorrow L has to go in to work in the AM. Kids are going to a friend's house in the afternoon and then L and I are going to see Avenue Q for our 14 year dating anniversary. Going to dinner with our friends and all of the kids after. No idea about Sunday. L might have to go into work. Pehaps pool time? Reading? Errands?
