My midwife doesn't use the Glucola drink. They use giant jelly beans. Not yummy jelly belly ones lol, but giant old people jelly beans. I have to eat 10 in 2 min. Yummm... @-)
I don't mind the drink that much, but I wish I could eat jelly beans instead!
After reading through the posts about the glucose test I am noticing a lot of you mentioning a high protein breakfast for the 1hr. I was told just nothing sugary so to stay away from oj and have like toast. Does the high protein breakfast help with passing the 1hr? What would a high protein breakfast be? Eggs? TIA
Great question - would love to hear what you ladies think about that too. Also - I was told I can take mine any time between 26-28 weeks. I was tempted to wait but now thinking I'll just go in next week (26 weeks) and get it over with. But now reading about folks who failed the 1-hour test taking it early - makes me wonder if I should wait an extra week or even wait till 28 weeks. Does a week or two matter? Any thoughts?
For the first question - eat a normal breakfast if you are allowed to eat. You don't want to "fool" the test. Getting a false negative is VERY dangerous for your pregnancy and your baby. Trying to fool the test by eating something different than usual is a bad idea.
You are more likely to develop GD the later in your pregnancy that you are. This is why the women who were tested early for reasons of being high risk are usually tested again at 28 weeks.
theresat858 - Thank you. So a question - when you say eat normally. My normal breakfast is organic yogurt with fruit on the bottom and granola - but there is a decent amt. of sugar in that. Nurse said while not to go crazy, I should avoid something sugary - so I was planning to just eat some cheese and crackers for breakfast instead - are you saying I shouldn't? Just wondering.
Also - re: 28 weeks, that makes sense - so should I be waiting till 27 or even 28 weeks versus doing next week at 26 or is there a nominal difference between- since my docs do say 26-28 weeks? Just wondering again. Thank you!!
Ok, I just called my doctor's office and apparently we don't do the 2-hour. They do the standard 1-hour and then the 3-hour if you fail. Apparently they only schedule the 3hour - the 1-hour they just give you a sheet and send you to the lab (they say to go somewhere between week 26-28) and have you do it there...fun, fun. So, if I get to the lab and its packed, I'll probably have to leave and come back.
When I mentioned the many false positives of the 1-hour, the nurse said - well that's why we have the 3-hour.... I like my doctor's office, but that is just silly.
I'm guessing you're a fellow Canadian? If you're in Ontario and have a Life Labs near by (lifelabs.ca) you can book an appointment. I did it for my last round of blood work and it was so very fast.
I'll be getting my requisition at my appointment today and will just have to go sometime in the next 2 weeks!
Last time I remember wishing the drink was cold, so I might bring a cup of ice with me when I go.

Actually nope - I'm in the U.S. Thanks for the tip though. Someone also gave me the tip of using a straw - said it makes drinking it down easier.
I talked to my midwife today about how strongly I wish to avoid Glucola, and she said the lab now allows you to bring your own fruit juice and follow the nutrition label to dose out the grams of sugar they need to do the test. I will definitely do this instead of drinking the Glucola. I'm still nervous about putting 75 grams of sugar into my body first thing in the morning, but chugging OJ or grape juice hopefully won't be as bad. Hate the GT test.
Mine is on July 8th, so I still have almost two weeks to go. Honestly, it wasn't that awful the first time around. It wasn't great, but I didn't find it to be as terrible as others did.

Good breakfast ideas that are non sugary would be plain yogurt, eggs and a meat like sausage/bacon etc. Avoid juices, fruit. You could have some carbs but pair it with a protein. I had my test in the afternoon and I had plain greek yogurt for breakfast, whole wheat toast with peanut butter around 10am and lunch (can't remember what I ate, maybe pulled pork and coleslaw) before I took my test at 1:30pm. I passed even though I had GD with DS1.
And you made a comment earlier that you were worried about passing because your diet includes healthy sugar - GD can happen to anyone regardless of diet, I don't want you to feel that something you did caused GD (if you fail the test) or for that comment to cause others to feel that their diet caused them to have GD.

@ss265 - Thank you for this - very helpful. I don't have it scheduled as my doctor's does it at a lab, so I have to just go into the lab. I think I'll do it earlier to avoid it taking too much time out of work. Probably eat breakfast between 7-7:30 and go in between 8:30-9am. Thanks for the tips on breakfast. I really don't like just plain yogurt, tastes like eating a container of sour cream to me, so I'll try the whole grain toast with peanut butter or some cheese and crackers and think that will cut it. I'm not much of an egg in the morning kind of person and have been avoiding sausage and bacon due to the nitrates (the nitrate free doesn't taste all that great to me).
And you are right - re: diet. I didn't mean to offend or imply that anyone who gets GD has a bad diet - I have read it really can happen to anyone - just wondered if my higher sugar intake could make me pre-disposed. So if I offended anyone or implied that - I do apologize - I'm just nervous in general for it - as if i end up with GD - I'm worried that regulating my diet will be really tough. If I have to suddenly give up yogurt and fruit and granola and granola bars, I'm not sure what I'll eat - my schedule is such that it's tough for me to cook a breakfast or a lunch and even dinners we do stretcher meals (not processed food) but stuff we cook on Sunday to eat all week - so if I need to eat a very specialized diet, we'll struggle some - but as many have before me, I'll manage. Just makes me tense.
Thank you again for all the advice - and to all who have offered advice before you.
I have mine today, the one hour test, at 3:30pm. I hope it's not so bad, and praying that I pass!!
28 years old. Married 5 years. DD born Oct 2014 via C-Section (footling breech) Baby #2 (AND #3...SURPRISE!) Due Nov 17, 2016. Found out it was twins at 18+5!
My test is on Friday. I have to fast and drink the orange stuff. I'm so gaggy all the time I'm a little worried about keeping it down. But worst part is, I have to work right afterwards. I'm hoping it doesn't screw my stomach up even worse!
I just scheduled mine for next Thursday morning. I'm nervous. I was just told to go to a lab anytime next week but I wasn't told anything else. Wasn't told to fast/not fast, eat less sugar or more protein etc. I don't want to cheat but I feel like, based on what PPs have said, that I should at least cut back on my sugar intake that week and eat a lean breakfast. Does that count as cheating?
I had my glucose test this week and I chose the lemon-lime this round. I chose fruit punch with my first child. I did fine with her, but was worried this go around because I've been really sensitive to sweet foods this pregnancy. It seems like every sweet that I have, it makes a sour taste and feel in my stomach. I did survive the lemon lime flavor, however since I had mine in the afternoon and was unable to eat lunch, 10 minutes before my blood draw I got really dizzy and lightheaded. Long story short, I found out that I am slightly anemic this pregnancy. The first was such a breeze and this go around is so much rougher on my body.
My 1 hour glucose is tomorrow. I don't have to fast and I was told that it's no big deal. It just tastes like flat orange soda. My mom friends told me to drink it very cold and fast - so that's my plan. Good luck with your test!
Yay! I passed : ) They told me to fast. I had the orange flavor too but it was room temperature. Yuck! It was like really sweet orange soda. I had no problem with it but I've been eating a lot of sweets : ) so maybe I'm just used to it.
I'm going to have this done at my 30 week visit. Im off work for the summer and my appointment is at 8:30 so I was thinking about just skipping breakfast and eating afterwards. Is that bad to do or would it be okay?
I don't have it until the first week of August, but I'm kind of looking forward to it in a sick way. I LOVE sweet stuff so I don't mind the drink and I want to see if I can finish it faster this time than I did last time. I do a hybrid test where it's 2 hrs instead of 1 or 3 so I have to fast after midnight but I can drink water after the first blood draw.
I also can't wait to sit in the air conditioned waiting room with absolutely nothing to do for 2 hours.
I did the fruit punch flavor this time around and passed by one point. Last pregnancy I failed the one hour by one point. My tip would be bring a snack for afterwards.
I'm going in this afternoon, but this isn't my first one hour. I had to do one at 3 months because of my mom being diabetic. Yuck yuck yuck. I hope I pass!
Someone read my mind and brought this thread to the top. About to go in for my blood draw for my 1hr. LO is doing backflips and I feel like I'm going to pass out. This does not bode well.
I'm going for mine in a few hours! FX it goes smooth & isn't too nasty to drink! Sugary stuff has not been a favorite of mine lately so hopefully it sits well.
I'm sitting in the lab waiting room right now, with 25 minutes to go. It wasn't too bad until the older woman next to me breaks it a bagel and starts smacking on it. Now I'm both mad I couldn't have my regular bagel with cream cheese for breakfast and disgusted by her gross overly loud chewing. As for the drink, I had orange. It was chilled and didn't taste bad in the least!
I had mine last week and I PASSED! I was really worried I wouldn't so I was all kinds of excited when I got the call.
It wasn't as bad as I thought. I had the orange and it reminded me of Orange Drink, only sweeter. I did get a stomach ache after about 30 minutes but it wasn't bad. I didn't eat much sugar the day before andI had eggs and turkey bacon for breakfast about 2/3 hours before.
The only issue I had was that I accidentally scheduled my appointment at the wrong lab and had to wait an hour before even starting the test. That was super annoying but it was my fault and at least it's over with now!
I failed the 1 hour test last week. Just wrapped up the 3 hour test ms it was brutal sitting there for tht long. I'll get results next week. FX that all is well.
I must be the oddball because the glucose test really doesn't bother me. I'm told not to fast, just not to eat/drink anything too sugary that morning. And I don't think the drink taste that bad... just like flat, extra sweet Sprite. My OB gives the option of orange or lemon-lime flavor. I've done lemon-lime the past two times with no problem, so I'm sticking with that.
I'm the same way- it wasn't that bad the first time around. The lab that I used for my first had the orange flavor. I'm not sure which flavor this one will have, but I'm guessing it will either be lemon lime or orange. Mine is on the 14th and I'm planning on watching what I eat on Sunday (sticking to protein and veggies, with just a few fruits/natural sugars). I'll eat a couple of eggs for breakfast before my test and then eat whatever after. My biggest dread is that they couldn't get me in until like 10 am when I usually go in at 7:30 or 8. I'd probably feel different if I need to do the 3 hour test.
I am dissappointed because my OB didn't prescribe this test for me and i know it is time for me to have it, so I asked him to prescribe me a glucose test and he agreed, but didn't even mention the tolerance glucose test, he only prescribed a blood sugar test.

This is the same thing.
Typically you do a 1 hr test and if you fail that you do a 3 hr
