PSA - Drink your water! Or end up like me...

So, I normally drink a ton of water. A ton. The past few days I've been off work because we are moving this weekend, so I have been packing boxes all day (in July, in Texas) and apparently not getting the amount I need.

I headed to Whole Foods to get some stuff for dinner this afternoon, and as I was standing at the deli counter I noticed that the woman in front of me looked kind of blurry. Next thing I know, I am lying flat on my back in the middle of Whole Foods, after passing out and hitting my head. There's about 20 people crowded around me, which is just insanely scary and humiliating. The first thing I said was "I'm pregnant" and a guy said he had already called an ambulance.

I felt fine, just weak after I sat up. After getting wheeled off and taken to the emergency room in an ambulance, my husband met me there, completely freaked out, of course.  I made them take the fetal heartbeat first, everything checked out fine. They did tons of tests, including a CT scan, even though I didn't want to because of the radiation. I called my OBGYN who said it was fine.

Verdict? Dehydrated. And not even severely. The ER doc said it is just so, so dangerous to let yourself get dehydrated when you're pregnant for this exact reason.

Also, mild concussion from hitting my head on the ground. Aaaaand I will never go to that Whole Foods again, because I'm pretty sure every employee knows me now.

Glad to hear that you and the baby are okay and thanks for posting this! It's so easy to get dehydrated in this extreme weather that many of us are currently experiencing. Take care of yourself!

  • If you didnt want a CT scan why did they give you one? Thats illegal if you do not give permission.

  • I'm so sorry this happened to you! And I'm glad all is ok with you and baby. This heat has not been easy on me - luckily when I get busy DH is on me to drink enough water throughout the day.

Oh no! What a scary experience!! I am so glad you are both ok.

Thank you for the reminder!! We all need to slow down and take care of ourselves.
  • Plus, I'm glad I did it because concussions can be super dangerous. Mine is very mild and they said I was super lucky, because I have a nice lump on my head. They just said to rest, not fall asleep, etc, but that watching TV and being on the computer was fine unless I got a headache.
  • How scary! Glad you and baby are ok.

  • Oh, I'm from Texas. We are just moving houses. I am so used to the heat by now that I guess I wasn't drinking enough.
  • Oh my goodness that sounds like a nightmare. Glad you and the baby are doing ok.

  • Thank u for sharing-it's an important message! I'm also insanely glad you and baby are ok! I remember hearing somewhere a doctor telling a pregnant woman that she should always have a cup/glass/bottle of water with her and for some reason that stuck in my head. ( it may have been an episode of teen mom-but hey...it's still good advice). I travel with a cup of water at all times. But there are times I drink it and can't refill right away...and in this heat have felt dehydrated for sure! Glad ur ok! Keep drinking that h2o!
  • Literally just poured myself some water when I saw this. Chug chug! Glad you are ok!

  • Im glad you're ok! It's so hot outside, but it's still hard to remember to stay watered up. Good news is that you're doing well. Hugs!
  • Glad you're ok--the heat really creeps up on you in terms of effect. It was in the 90s here in nyc a few days back and I had to stop three times during the last five minutes of my fifteen min walk home in delis/a drugstore to cool down.

  • So glad you're okay! I have started getting headaches ( I live in fl/ga so heat and humidity are terrible here), so I talked to my ob yesterday. She asked how much water I have been drinking, I said around 5 bottles a day (before preg it was around 2)... She said it needs to be closer to 10!! Stay hydrated everybody!!
  • Oh jeeze, so glad you are okay! Bet that was scary.  ((downs a jug of water))

  • OMG. I have a hard time with water but I will force it down. Glad you are ok n thanks for sharing.
  • Yikes! I'm in Texas too and yep, it's hot! I do drink plenty of water as well just because I'm out at the pool, water park, riding bikes with my kids all the time.

While the dehydration most likely played a role in your fainting, fainting itself can be somewhat common during pregnancy. I've had a couple friends pass out, one did it several times during pregnancy. Scary!!
  • So glad you and baby are ok! I live in tx too and have had a slight scare like that. Not as bad (no er or concussion) but scary and embarrassing. I try to keep a water bottle with me all the time now.

  • Thanks for the reminder! Sipping some right now :) Glad you and baby are okay!
  • Oh my im glad your okay! !!
I always have my big purple "bubba" water with me which is super helpful. But I do feel dehydrated alot with the heat.

Take care of yourselves ladies and drink the watahhhh!!!!
  • Oh no! It's terribly hot and humid where I am too. There have been several instances where I start to feel like I'm going to pass out and immediately try to find water. Sometimes when you get busy you just forget! Glad you and baby are ok!!

I'm really sorry this happened to you, but I'm happy that you and your LO are doing well!  I have read that stuff areas with little to no ventilation can also cause pregnant women to get dizzy and possibly faint, esp. in the 2nd tri.  I looked this up, because I had a dizzy spell earlier in the week in a dollar store with no AC.  It was hot that day, but I sat right down and put my head between my legs.  I was with my MIL and then we went to get lunch right away.  I can't even imagine the heat in TX!  Be careful and stay well :-)

I am glad you are ok. This is the one thing that my rn at my ob's office was really pushing. I was a little dehydrated on my first visit and she said water is extremely important. I will down a glass of water now before I go to bed because I have been waking up dehydrated. The worst time for me to get water in is at night after I have drank 64 oz already at work and have peed 6 times. I get tired of the restroom but realize it is necessary.

  • Sorry, I'm late to the party. I'm glad you're ok! I couldn't agree more with staying hydrated while pregnant. I went into preterm labor at 32 weeks with DS and the verdict was dehydration! So scary.

Glad you're feeling better! I'm grabbing my water now!

Just wanted to check back in and see how you are feeling. Update?
  • Glad you're feeling better and thanks for the reminder. Water is hard for me to keep down right now but I always try.

As for never going to that store again for fear they'll remember you...they will lol. I was a flight attendant and ended up getting a really bad kidney infection (due to an untreated UTI bc I didn't have insurance. STUPID). We stopped in Birmingham AL and I started getting terrible back pain and had blood in my urine. I could hardly stand up. They thought it might be a kidney stone. Anyway they called an ambulance and in was wheeled off the plane. What really sucks is our next flight was to be full of some paraplegic sports team...it was an "out station" for us which meant we didn't have an extra crew member in the city. My crew had to go on back to our HUB with an empty flight. (Must have 2 FA for 66 passenger plane). EVERY time I went back to that station they recognized me the second I opened the door. I hated it. For 2 years lol

    Update:

Feeling much better, and peeing every five minutes due to the insane amount of water I'm drinking :)
We are moving this weekend, so I haven't had a ton of time to just rest, but my husband has been super wonderful and done most of the work so I can rest.

I went to see my OBGYN the next day, and she just said to be extra careful exercising, out in the heat, etc, and that if I start to feel dizzy again just sit down, and at least that way if I faint I won't smash my head!

Thanks for all the well wishes, and seriously, everyone drink tons of water! Let me horror story be a fun lesson :)
