Pump Parts

Y'all. I'm just having one of those days. I know this isn't CDR at all, but this is home so I'm asking anyway. Do I need to go ahead and plan ahead that I might be pumping with DS2 (and therefore buy milk storage bags, replacement tubing, etc)? Or should I wait and see? FWIW I will still be a SAHM, so I will rarely be separated from him unless something crazy happens.

Re: Pump Parts

  • I would at least keep that option open (as in... Have everything you need on hand), so go ahead and buy the bags (you can always use them for homemade baby food later if you want or to freeze other liquids like veggie stock). Do you already have a pump? If so, go ahead and outfit it. If not, I'd maybe recommend a simple manual pump. That way if you want/ need to pump, you're already set and good to go.

  • I would wait and see. It's more practical (and easy) to get some milk storage and pumping supplies if you feel the need, but it'd be a total PITA and/or a money waste to buy them and never use them.

I would wait and see what your hospital offers. I asked for a LC to come help how me how to pump. Then they sent me home with the pump parts and a manual pump. The parts were compatible with a medela which is what I have.

I'm with Elle. I think if you already have a pump, it's not a bad idea to have some bags and pump parts on hand. Best case scenario and you don't need to pump, you may at some point leave baby with a sitter for a dinner date and youll need to pump for that.

But I wouldn't buy a pump if you don't already have one. FYI if you ask, most L&D wards will give you a manual pump if you ask. And you can always hand express into a bowl in a pinch.

  • I also SAH.  I have had several occasions in which I have had to pump.  It is necessary to have all the parts you need sterilized and ready to go if something comes up.  But if it's just back-up/extra parts you are considering you could probably hold off.
  • If you already have a pump, parts, and bottles to pump into, you could just wait on the other stuff. You'd have what you need to pump in an emergency situation and time to get storage supplies. If you don't have new tubing and/or membranes, etc I'd get that so your pump is functional in case of emergency.

  • I have a single electric pump already, but my insurance will pay for a good double Medela if my doctor authorizes it.

  • The double electric Medelas come with all the parts/tubing/couple bottles/extra membranes.  So you would be all set if that is the case.

  • I agree on getting the insurance-provided pump. It will come with all the essentials. If you find you are using it quite frequently, you may find you want more bottles/spare parts. But the initial setup will have everything you need.

  • What about a pumping bra? Yay or nay? I made one with DS1 out of an old sports bra, and it was horrible. I can get the Simple Wishes bra on Amazon for about $25.

  • Honestly, I would get a manual pump. They're cheap and good to have on hand. I wouldn't go all out on bags and stuff til you decide you need them.
I found what I think is a manual pump that came home with me from the hospital with DS1. They never explained it to me and it doesn't have labels or instructions, so I'm not really sure. (It came with the bag of replaceable parts for the hospital pump.) I was expecting something that looks more like a spray bottle that would work in reverse. This thing looks like...I dunno...part of a cookie press?? Anyway, it turns out I'm going to have to hold off on buying anything besides bags b/c for some reason the place I have to order the pump through is only showing an Ameda and a Tomy, not the Medela.

So am I the only one who thinks it's a little shady to get a "free" pump from your insurance if you already have a pump and may or may not ever use one?

No, I agree that it is shady to get something you don't need just b/c it's "free." However, in my case the single electric was not enough. I never had a good supply with DS1, and when I finally rented a hospital grade pump, it seemed like it was too late to really do any good. I feel weird about ordering an insurance pump ahead of time (if I even can) without knowing I'll need it, but b/c it will take at least 2 weeks to get it shipped, I feel like I am better off doing what I can early. If I rent a pump, it will be at least $80, whether I have it for a week or a month. :(

No, TJ, you're not. Yet, it isn't "free" as much as she's welcome to it as a lactating mother.  So.  Meh.

My hospital had a connection with a supplier and I called them from the hospital. They delivered the pump on my last day in the maternity ward.

I needed to pump in the hospital and was glad to have the setup delivered before I left so they could explain it to me (my son had jaundice so I needed to pump right away).

Maybe call the hospital and see if they have a connection (generally, if not for delivery while you're there) with a medical supply place with pumps.  Then you can see how BFing goes this time, and take it from there.
Our insurance is based out of another state, so I have to have it shipped. The hospital will provide one while I'm there, but if I take it home with me, I have to rent it.

  • Does your insurance pay for rental of the hospital grade pump if your doctor says you need it? Mine had the option for either the rental of the hospital grade or a double electric personal pump like the Medela.
They didn't mention it when I called about it a few months back, but I will check again.

Well Jane, that's an obvious need, so yeah, get it. My insurance wouldn't let me order one till after LO was born, but would pay for one month of a hospital rental till mine came in. I had to get it from a medical supply company.

I didn't mean you specifically, but I've heard a lot of people wanting to get these "free" pumps just because. And I find that sketchy.

  • Jane, check and see if your insurance will cover ordering through Edgepark. My insurance company gave me the number for a different company that only offered Ameda, but when I talked to someone else they told me about Edgepark.

  • I think if you know that you are going to formula feed and are just getting it to sell it then I find that sketchy. If you intend to BF, then whether you are a SAHM or a working mom, you should order the pump without feeling guilty.
