Your favorite pocket diaper

NvywifeNvywife member
edited July 2014 in Cloth Diapering
So I have done a lot of research and read a ton of reviews. But I want to know your favorite pocket diaper before I start buying. What do you like about brands? What you don't like? Do I need newborn size or are the one size ok? Updated*** DS was super skinny had chicken legs, that never really filled out. Is this a problem with leg holes?

Re: Your favorite pocket diaper

  • BumGenius is still my favorite.  I just feel like the quality and fit is the best.  I buy only OS pocket diapers.  Prefolds and covers are better for newborns.

  • I like my BG 4.0 pockets, Fuzzibunz, Simplex, and Oh Katy diapers.  They've all fit differently so over 2.5 years I've been favoring different ones.

  • My favorite pockets have been the easy to stuff ones....BG 4.0, Kawaii, so far and Diaper Safari, and Nicki's being my least favorite ones. My Thirsties pockets....those I have a love/hate relationship with....they're harder to stuff with my flats but the hemp insert alone works well enough for ds.

  • I like my BG 4.0S and kawaii. You definitely need to buy some newborn dipes too. And I agree with welly, prefolds and covers are great for newborns. But I also like my Blueberry simplex newborn AIO. It holds the NB poo really well.

We use pockets mainly for DC, so aplix/velcro is a must.

Hands down SoftBums Omnis are my favorite for that use.  I also like Rumparooz, but the rise is shorter and I think my tall guy will outgrow it before PL'ing.

Yes, you definitely need NB diapers.  Or you'll have to use disposables for the first 2-10 weeks until your LO's thighs chunk up enough to fill OS leg holes without gaps.

I agree prefolds, flats, or workhorse fitteds are way better in the NB stage than pockets.  T

ETA: I do like BG 4.0s but I hate their aplix. It doesn't hold up very well.

Thirsties and Oh Katys have been the most reliable ones for us. It also took a while for DS to fill out enough to wear pockets. I like pockets that front-stuff. It's harder for poo to get in there.
  • Wow, I didn't think anyone else used Oh Katy's...

Have you used the pure and natural kawaiis on a newborns? I have been looking at Kawaiis site and wonder if that would be better to start then prefolds.

I had these for my newborn stash.  I did not like using them until about 1 month.  The prefolds and covers were better at containing newborn poop.

I had a couple to try in case I didn't like prefolds, but I didn't like them at all for nb. I didn't like pockets at all until C became so active that diaper changes were a pain in the last couple months.

I started using my P&Ns since about 5 weeks, only because I didn't order them until that time. I think they would have fit a bit earlier I think. It depends on the baby though. Nothing will be as customizable as flats or prefolds for a newborn though.

I'm not the biggest fan of pockets though, I like my p&ns for overnight for this newborn phase, but I'm selling off all my other pockets at this point, I hate stuffing pockets.

I love Bummis Whisper Wraps and Super Brights for the NB phase.  I didn't use Bummis prefolds so I can't speak to that.  I agree with the PP that GMD makes a great prefold.

@Nvywife‌ bummis prefolds are good, but about the most expensive you can get. Not worth the price. I love my way way cheaper Indian cotton prefolds from nickis, and GMD are the most popular. I have all three, and they seem the same to me.

As for covers, I wasn't a big fan of the bummis that I tried.

I have a few and have been using them since week 2. My ds is now 5 weeks. I don't love them as I find them hard to stuff and they have leaked pee a couple of times. They do fit well however. Ds was about 7.5 lbs when I started using them. I think I will like them better when I can unsnap the rise.

BG 4.0s are my favourite. I've only used them and ACs but they fit my baby really well (she is long and lean). Plus the colours are pretty and the quality is great.

I had no idea Oh Katy made prints ... last I checked they were all solid colors? Anyway, they fit my skinny little guy better than some of the more popular brands that we've tried.
  • I really like my sunbaby the best.

  • X was super skinny, Rumparooz fit him the best followed by Oh Katy's and BG 4.0. He was in nb diapers until almost 6 months because of how little he was.

I liked my 2 Bummis super whisper wraps when ds was a nb as much as I liked the 2 Thirsties duo wraps I had. I used the Bummis preemie prefolds and Osocozy ones. I think they were comparable for quality, but not worth the extra expense. I have used the Bummis prefolds for extra absorbency with the flats a time or two when I thought it might be needed and they would work great for that if ds2 peed more.

  • I really love my Softbums Omni and my rumparooz. I'm in the minority in that I don't like Bumgenius. I was given a Kawaii minky recently, and I has a great fit on my 2 year old. I'm not sure how it will do on a tiny, though.
I also have some small Yiddle Doppers which are fantastic.

They used to, I believe the only print I have it old.  I know the company is under new ownership and I think they only do solids now.  I'm looking to see if I have a picture of her in it.  It is also aplix and I think they only do snaps now.

Yeah, I was curious about this one.  The Oh Katy's I got almost 3 years ago were all solids.  In fact when I got mine, I don't think she had red, silver, or black at the time.  I am seriously tempted to get those three.  But I think my husband would side eye me on that one.  I already have 8 Oh Katy's.

Originally I had 6.  I got one free with a Kelly's Closet order.  One of my original pockets had the elastic give out in the back about a month after using it.  I was really upset and emailed them.  She actually sent me a new pocket (without inserts) for free.  And she didn't request the broken one back.  So I had my mom fix it and now I have a total of 8.

By far my favorite pockets are BG 4.0s.  We send pockets to daycare so i now have 17 BG.  I also have Nicki's, Imagine, and Fuzzibunz.  I HATE Fuzzibunz right now and have from the beginning.  I'm torn about whether to get rid of them or save and hope they're a better fit in the future?

Also, i only have snaps and my daycare does great with it.  I always drop him off with a pocket on so they know where the snaps fit and its fine.

  • I haven't tried many expensive brands, and my favorites have changed as DD grew. Right now I really like my Alvas - they're inexpensive, have held up well, and have super cute prints. I loved my Sunbabies when DD's legs were thinner. For the newborn stage, Kawaii Pure & Naturals were my favorites. I'm liking my BG 4.0s more now that DD is squirmy since they have one less snap to close. They also seem easier for babysitters.
