Cloth Diapering

Disposable inserts for cloth diapers

Hello everyone! I'm very excited to start cloth diapering and have been doing a lot of research/watching videos/listening to podcasts about cloth diapering.

I now see that some companies have disposable inserts for the cloth diaper covers. Has anyone else seen these?

Has anyone tried them and can share their experiences?

Thanks!

Re: Disposable inserts for cloth diapers

  • I got them to try out on a vacation once and was not impressed. They don't hold in runny newborn or pre-solid foods poo, so then you still end up having to clean the cover. I still have a few, and I bring them along as backup when we travel, but honestly I never get around to using them. It's the waste of a disposable with the maintenance required of an AI2.

  • I have never used them, I don't see the point. It is like the worst of cloth and disposables put together. Some are supposed to be biodegradable, and so "greener" than traditional disposables, but it would still be easier to do full cloth IMO, and cheaper.

I could see the appeal for vacation or something, but it would usually be cheaper to just buy a small pack of disposables.

  • Thank you for your feedback on the disposable inserts. Like you mentioned they might only be good for vacations, if that.

What brand of covers do u all use?

    Thanks!
  • I have a pack of Flip disposable inserts that I got on a whim several years ago. Like PPs, I wasn't really impressed with them. They're a bit like maxi pads without the stick-um. We rarely vacation, so I just keep them on hand in case of emergency. I live in an area prone to tornadoes, and we spent a week without power three years ago. Some people got theirs back within days, and some were without for 2 weeks. I figure the disposable inserts would get us through at least the beginning of an outage until we could get to a store and buy regular disposable diapers if needed. However, now that I have gotten more comfortable with flats, we would probably just use them and hand wash as needed as long as I had access to hot water.

  • I really don't think disposable inserts provide any advantage over regular disposables, but somebody out there probably loves them.
  • I haven't used them but in my research I've come across some good articles/reviews comparing different brands that you might enjoy reading:
Comparing fit of hybrids (Flip, Grovia & Softbums)
Comparing absorbancy of inserts (Flip, Grovia & gDiapers)

It sounds like there is little problem mixing & matching the hybrid inserts & shells, and so it would follow that you should be able to use the inserts in just about any OS cover.

The idea of using them everyday seems like the worst of both worlds (cost & trash requirement of a disposable and still the laundry requirement of cloth) rather than the best of both worlds. But I like the idea of having disposable inserts as a backup rather than disposable diapers.  The big advantage in my mind of the disposable inserts is that they (all but the gDiapers) are One-Size so you don't have to worry about outgrowing them / guessing the right size to buy.

We ended up getting a pack of the Grovia BioSoaker Disposable Inserts (when they were on sale on Earth Day), thinking that with the gussets they would be the most likely to contain poop / allow the cover to be re-used.  We haven't had a need to used them yet, but as we are just starting hurricane season its good to know we have them in case of any extended power outages (and not have to worry about picking up disposables either before or after a storm).

  • I'm thinking of getting a pack of gDiaper inserts for rash times (my sister gave me hand me down gPants) but I don't think I would use them outside of that.

  • Thank you all for the feedback! I think for now I'm going to stick with cloth inserts but it's good to know we have options! Now, it's time to start collecting my cloth diapers!!
