Parenting after a Loss

Traveling with Baby

So tomorrow DD, my husband and I are going on our first family trip to San Diego for a wedding.  We will only be there until Sunday so it is a short trip but I'm a little anxious about it.  Since this is my first child, I have never traveled with a baby.  We will be flying out at 6pm tomorrow and returning late Sunday night.  Are there any suggestions for making travel with a baby easier?  Any tricks to ease my mind?  Any places in San Diego we should take baby to visit?

Also, any suggestions of things to do on Sunday.  We have to check out of the room by noon but the flight doesn't leave until 8pm.  I am concerned about what to do with baby and where we can go so she can get a nap. Any thoughts? TIA ladies!!!

Re: Traveling with Baby

  • Oh, sorry meant to include her age. She is four months. She does like to be in the carrier so that may just work! Thanks

  • Feed or give her her pack during takeoff and landing. Take a new book or small toy that might peak her interest if she gets fussy. I always traveled with my stroller and a carrier so I had options of where to put DD. I'm not sure how feasible a stroller would be I'm SF though, I've never been.

  • Oh and we always take foam ear plugs to hand out to the passengers around us just in case DD was fussy. :)

  • Security will allow you to take liquids for the baby, but they will have to inspect it.  Ask them to put on fresh gloves.  They'll ask you to open the containers, but they won't put anything in or take anything out.  They just wave this test strip over the top.  If you wear the baby, they won't ask you to remove her for security and they won't ask you to stand in the big security scanner.

When she was little, I brought a pillow for the airplane.  It saved my arms.  PJ is 15 mths and has flown 3 times already.  This last flight this past weekend, we used a kindle and some baby headphones to keep her busy.  Yours is probably too young, but it's something to think about for future flights.  Our airline also let us check stroller and car seat for free.  We brought these through the airport and did a gate check for these items.  Less risk of damage with the other luggage.

I can't think of everything right now, but if I have more ideas, I'll let you know.

  • How old is your LO? I'm mobile and that would influence my answer.

  • Just saw your reply.

For a 4 monther with flying, I would gate check the stroller and car seat if you plan on using it in SD. Carriers work well for little ones thru security as well. You are allowed liquids, just be ready for a pat down. Nurse during accent and decent. Travel with Tylenol and a dropper (the dropper saved my behind more than once). Try and keep schedule as close to usual, and remember that baby still is on home-time. She will adjust slowly, just stick with her schedule and adjust with her.

For things to do (I used to live there): The zoo is something most like (wear good shoes and bring a stroller, lots of hills), balboa park is pretty and great for walking and picnics. Old town is another good one (try the fudge at the candy shop). I can come up with other recs if I know where in town you'll be or what your interests will be.
