Girl Name Ideas

Hi! I'm popping over from O14 looking for some additional inspiration for girl names. Our last name is a short, one syllable, very Irish name and my husband and I are both Irish. Our name style leans toward classic/old fashioned, but slightly unusual names. I also love really Irish names, but don't want to saddle a girl here in the US with an impossible to pronounce name (e.g. Saoirse).

Our current favorites are:
Maeve (current top choice)
Alice
Lucy
Winifred ("Winnie")
Charlotte (husband likes but I don't)
Nora (I like but husband doesn't)
Jane

Names we like but cannot use:
Caroline
Beatrice
Bridget
Edith ("Edie")
Evelyn
Sophia
Maureen

Thoughts? Any other ideas to add to the list?

  • I like Jane, Alice and Lucy best, in that order. They're all really nice though!

I looooovvveee Maeve, but I'm not sure about it with a one syllable last name. I also like Ciara, Fionnoula, and Orla. From your list I like Alice and Nora.

Thanks everyone! @KTZ17, the double one-syllable name issue has been bothering me too and I think that's what's been holding me back deciding on Maeve yet.  I would definitely include a multi-syllable middle name if we go with Maeve, but middle names get used so rarely that I'm not sure if makes much of a difference!  On the other hand, my husband has a name that is almost always shortened to a one-syllable nickname (think something like Will Smith) and that's never bothered me in the past.  We're definitely keeping Alice, Winnie and Lucy on the list too!

  • I like Maeve, Lucy, Nora, and Jane. And Bridget, I firmly believe it should make a comeback.

For other Irish girl names, maybe Brenna, Moira, Colleen, Noreen, Iona, Kerry, or Nessa

I totally agree on Bridget! But it's actually making too much of a comeback in my little circle -- it's my 2 year old niece's name and some very close friends of ours used it for their daughter last year, so we've ruled it out for us. :)
