Cloth Diapering

TTM about nighttime leaks

We use bum genius freetime AIO's. at night, I throw a fleece liner in. LO now soaks thru all of this at night. I am thinking of adding in either a disposable or cloth g diaper liner as well. Any thoughts or recommendations on something else to try? Thanks!

Re: TTM about nighttime leaks

  • We change half way through the night because our lo gets up and can't stand a wet diaper, but we use a fitted for the first half, and then either a rumparooz pocket or a ragababe two step with two inserts.

How old is LO? Are the Freetimes definitely saturated?

  • @TJ1979‌- he is 4 1/2 months. I think it's fully saturated. He leaks thru to PJ's, sleep sack and sheet though I haven't played with folding it differently.

Be cautious trying to fold it differently, you can't put the under side of the flaps against baby's skin.

I was trying to ascertain whether it's an absorbency issue, at which point you really need to consider a different ON solution, or whether it could be a fit issue, or repelling which would require laundry tweaking.

  • @TJ1979‌- I see what you are saying! If it makes any difference, the diapers are new as of 03/2014 and we launder in Bum Genius detergent. Do you have different ON solutions that have worked well for you?

We like best bottoms covers with a doubler and a cotton/hemp insert. Fitteds are also pretty guaranteed. What is your laundry routine?

  • We soak poopy diapers in cold water first. Otherwise, we wash diapers in a hot wash with an extra rinse using BG detergent. Then we dry them on delicate setting. I have some best bottoms covers I could try. I have also heard the cotton/hemp inserts are awesome.

Are you doing an initial rinse, do you drain and spin after soaking your poo diapers? You definitely need to be doing an initial rinse, drain, and spin cycle on all diapers, not just poo.

  • @TJ1979‌- yes, they all get an initial rinse before going into the wash. Then the wash cycle (on allergen mode) takes close to 2 hrs. It does initial rinse, drain, spin and then repeats. I hope it's not a laundering issue but can certainly adjust what I am currently doing if it seems like that is the problem.
  • I have a normal wetter and he peed through freetimes fairly early.

I found putting 3 bamboo inserts in a pocket worked better.

  • What is allergen mode? It's not like sanitize is it? Like it's not crazy hot?

And I would say it's normal for a 4.5 month old to soak through a regular diaper without any extra inserts at night. Fleece liners are not absorbent, they just act as a wetness barrier. But aren't free times stay dry?

Yes. Freetimes are stay dry. And I remember that around the 4-6month mark is when we needed fitteds/covers for nighttime

  • @Chickypoo2468‌- no, it's not crazy hot. It just runs the extra rinse/spin/drain cycle. I appreciate everyone's input! For the last couple nights I have added in an extra g cloth diaper insert with success. I will remember the other thoughts for down the road if we need another alternative- thanks!
