Pregnant after IF

Anyone have experience with a thin lining ?

Hi Ladies! I'm from the IF board and was hoping to get some thoughts from those who may have already been through this.

I was supposed to have FET this Friday, but it was delayed because my lining was only 6.3mm yesterday. I was on oral estrace and worked up to 4mg twice per day until last Thursday at which point we added 2mg twice per day vaginally. I was hoping the vaginal pills would really help, but my lining only went from about 6.0 to 6.3mm after 4 days. The quality did improve over that time (developed a triple line pattern), but clearly did not get much thicker. My RE seemed hopeful that given the improvement in quality, I just need some more time to build the lining. I have had things go wrong at every step of the IVF process thus far, so I guess I'm just really, really nervous that it won't thicken and we will have to cancel. My RE has never mentioned canceling - she keeps saying that my body likely needs a longer time of exposure to the estrogen - but I'm sure there is a point when the transfer would get cancelled.

Has anyone been through this??

At this point, she is hoping for at least 7.5mm (though would prefer >8). Has anyone had success with a lining on the thinner side?

I'm so nervous to get bad news - next lining check is Friday. Grow, grow, grow!

I've had light period for the past few years and lining was always on the thinner side.   Right before FET my lining was 7.3 mm and I'm now 14 weeks pregnant!  It can happen!  Good luck to you and FX that lining thickens up soon!

  • Hi!!  I've had success with thin lining...however, it was from a fresh transfer.  As you can see in my siggy, my lining would not get over a 6ish for our two cancelled FET's.  What is weird with my case is that I was on so much estrogen (also did vaginal viagra), that my estrogen levels were through the roof for my FET (3000+), which apparently (according to my RE) is due to possibly a liver issue, and my lining would not get over a 5.  His solution after 2 cancelled FET's was to just wait it out for a few months and try again (mine you I had been waiting 6 months already).

So, with a new RE, we went the fresh route (even though I have two day 6 frosties at the old RE) b/c my lining was an 8 during my first ER (did not transfer due to OHSS).  My lining was a 6.8 at my last monitoring appt (didn't measure it at ER or ET) and I know it had to have decreased once I started PIO (in my history it does).  So, all three embryos implanted in my sub 6.8 lining, but two were not chromosonally right, and I'm 17 weeks with my singleton!

It can happen with a 6ish lining!  Sorry so long :)

Can you try nitro patches? I'll tell you right now they suck but they did make a difference for me when my lining was thin. They are generally used for heart patients but you put them low on your pelvis just before bed and they help to draw blood to the area. If you use them, take it off before you standup in the morning. That really helped to keep headaches and dizziness away.

I didn't go through IVF.. but for my IUI's the meds always made my lining thin. I was put on estrogen patches. This past cycle I drank a ton of pom juice, walked every day and put a heating pad on at night on my stomach. It went up to 8mm from 6.4mm in two days, before the trigger shot. Good luck!!

    Edit: spelling :)

  • Mine was a little thin a week before this FET (I'd never had thin lining before except when on clomid). We added estrogen patches to the mix and that thickened it right up. Good luck!

  • Hi @gnl42! After looking back through my records, I think I definitely had some lining issues along the way. The nice thing about FET is that RE has more time and flexibility than a fresh or IUI cycle to help you build it up. @Calindi had good advice, for sure. Canceling really sucks, but may not be all bad if it means better chances next time. Another thing I'd suggest is looking into doing a session of electroacupuncture today and then right before and after the transfer. Who knows what really works and what doesn't -- it's undoubtedly a complex combination that's out of our control rather than one magic thing we do or don't do -- but I did see my lining grow quite a bit after RE expressed some concern over my thinner lining (see my thread about that here). He upped my estradiol and I had a session of electroacupuncture, and it grew a little over 1mm in two days. I'm 29 weeks along today.

Good luck, and hang in there. We're rooting for you.

Began TTC #1 in Sept. 2010. I was 33, DH was 36.. Dx with DOR and slight MFI (8/4/11).

Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful replies!

@heleng5 @praying4miracle17 @missem14 @orange1414 your stories really do give me hope

@calinidi to answer your questions - my lining has been on the thinner side since I started the IVF process. This was after a polypectomy back in Feb. RE thinks that there is a chance my body reacted that way to the scraping. It's hard to know for sure because we don't know what my lining was like before the surgery since I started seeing my RE after. In any case, the thickest it has been thus far is ~7.5mm and that was during this past fresh cycle (had to cancel transfer due to concern for late onset OHSS). We have 12 frozen embryos, so I want to go for it even if my lining isn't *ideal* because there is just no guarantee that starting over will get me a thicker lining. My RE is very conservative, so I know she won't go ahead unless the lining gets to a certain point - my guess is that she has 7mm in mind as the absolute minimum. Of note, I was drinking pomegranate juice and raspberry leaf tea when my lining got to 7.5mm... but then again, I have continued with the tea this time without any luck. Maybe I will overdose on pomegranate juice just in case for the next 2 days.

My first IVF cycle was cancelled altogether due to early ovulation, then we had to take a month off due to travel, then this past cycle we made it to ER but transfer was cancelled due to E2 >7000. It would just be really, really hard on me to have to get delayed/cancelled again. I do want to give myself the best chances, but there are just no guarantees no matter what we do.

I guess I will see how the lining is doing on Friday, what RE says, and will go from there. If it is still not responding, then I will ask about/look into some of the other suggestions @neesey @gettincrafty

    Thank you ladies!

Just wanted to update in case anyone comes across this thread who was in my position. Thankfully, the Viagra did work for me. My lining was down to 5.5 prior to starting it. One week later, it was 6.9 and another week later 7.5. So there is hope!

I'm out of town for the next week, so my transfer is scheduled for when I return assuming everything still looks good. FX.
