The Big Reflux Thread

Re: The Big Reflux Thread

  • At lo's 2 mo appt he was 14lbs 11oz and I was told .9 ml twice a day was the max. Wtf? I just called on Thurs and the pedi prescribed Prevacid but after waiting 2 days for the meds to come in I found out BCBS won't cover it and it's $299 a mo! So aggravated!

  • Loading the player...
  • @jenskurn‌ my LO was just put on prevacid and BCBS must have covered some of it....only cost me $8. Stinks that some insurance companies won't cover it.
  • @Elf2718‌ wth? We have pretty much the best plan offered and this has never been an issue. I'm just going to call on Monday. Glad to hear you guys didn't have a problem :)

  • Yeah...great until they wouldn't cover a pump...SMH. Definitely call! Hope they get their heads.out of their rears.
  • @jenskurn‌ definitely call. We only paid $25 for our prevacid. I hate insurance companies :|

  • Yay other moms that understand always being covered in spit-up! The ends of my hair are always crunchy and we have wet spots all over the house from this reflux.

My little guy is EBF. He is almost 3 months old and we've known about the reflux/GERD since his 4 week checkup. Suspected it since about 2 weeks. He's in the 22nd percentile for weight. He takes Zantac twice a day.
  • @embear22 I think that looks cute. I have a boppy lounger that is basically the same thing. I don't think my DS would actually sleep in there.

@Sisimama10‌ how much does your LO weigh and hhow much zantac does he get?

    image
    image
  • 11.2 pounds 25 inches tall. He gets .5 ml twice a day.
  • Vin is 10lbs 11.5.oz on .8ml of Zantac 3 times a day.

We had hoped the meds would help the weight gain but it hasn't helped. The doc said some babies just have a higher metabolism and need more calories- suggested I supplement one bottle of formula at night. I can't even get vin to take a bottle of breast milk anymore, how the eff am I going to get him to drink formula???

  • @embear22‌ I know it's not the same, but when we started LO on Zantac and then when we increased his dose he was definitely spitting up more. It lasted probably 5ish days. When I asked the pedi after the fact she said the Zantac shouldn't do that but I'm pretty sure it did.

  • LO is 10 weeks but at his last appt at 8 weeks he was 10 lbs exactly. He has a weight check in a week and a half... I'm hoping he's beefed up. He takes .7 ml Zantac 3 times a day.

Since We've started the prevacid, DS has been spitting up way more. Ugh.

  • My LO was just diagnosed last week although I've suspected it for a while. He sleeps just fine at night on a flat surface and has no issues with weight gain but spits up milk like it's going out of style. He is EBF and refuses to nurse in any position except for sitting upright in my lap/stretched out fully along my legs, all while arching his back like crazy. He is about 13.5 lbs and is on 2 ml of Zantac twice a day. Every time I give him some though he dribbles a lot out the side of his mouth so I don't know how much he is actually getting. It's been a week and he's still spitting up, although his general fussiness has subsided.

  • @ImnAtari‌ hugs. I hope your day gets better. I hate seeing lo spit up because I don't know how much he is actually eating. It sucks, but I remind myself that this won't last forever.

Anyone else having trouble with baby eating?

I know I have mentioned vins weight gain issues a few times and I just feel like it's never going to get better. The doc suggested We supplement a big bottle of breast milk and start giving him a bottle of formula at night.

He refuses to eat it- he just cries and cries and seems like he is just in pain. He hasn't even wanted to eat from the breast after trying the bottle. I am so scared to see what the scale will say. I feel so awful his tummy hurts to bad he won't eat- I just wish this would get better already :(

During the day he does well smiles giggles is happy unless hungry or tired, but as soon as it hits 7 or 8 he goes nuts. I am extra freaked out bc I think all the crying is burning even more calories and ugh. I am rambling, I just feel hopeless right now.

    Anyone else experiencing something similar?

Eta- I even tried using a medicine dropper thingy to get the formula down and he just cried so much I couldn't do the whole thing (and it takes forever!) ugh.

  • @Holljade‌ your doing the best you can. Bubba has had a hard time eating lately. He can barely force 3 oz down. Have you already gone to see a GI doc? I feel terrible for you and vin. I am so sorry. Just know that it won't last forever and he will probably grow out of it. Bubba gets crazy between 7 and 8 too and it sucks. Chin up. It WILL get better.

  • How do you ladies get tummy time and play time? If I lay bubba on his back or tummy he spits up. I can't do it when he wakes up because he's screaming for food or right before a nap because he's tired. His neck strength needs improvement and Idk what to do.

    image
    image
  • @Ambarnett1‌ thanks, the doc hasn't recommended a GI specialist yet. Since he is gaining SOMETHING they just want us to try stuff to get him to gain more (he gains between .5-.7oz per day instead of the 1 oz they are "supposed" to gain"

I have a weight check next Friday- I'll see what they have to say.

As for tummy time, can you put LO on your chest and have him do it?

  • @Holljade‌ I think both you and vin could benefit from a GI specialist. When I lay him on my chest, he just lays there and sucks on his hands. So frustrating.

  • @Ambarnett1 We have the same issue.  I use the Boppy for tummy time and even on the playmat on his back if he just ate.  I brought it up to the pedi bc I feel like he doesn't even get enough floor/laying flat time.  He's always being held or in the RnP or swing.    I feel like he is never going to roll over bc he's always so scrunched up being held upright.  At his 2 mo appt the pedi put him on his belly to see if he could lift his head and he just kind of laid there.  I explained we were putting him on the Boppy bc being flat was just too much for him.  She then lifted his chest a little and his head popped right up and she said that was just fine and the best choice considering his reflux.

  • @ImnAtari‌ @embear22 It will all even out one day. This too will not last forever. Since we have tough newborns, maybe we will have easy infants and toddlers. One can only hope.

  • When do most babies outgrow reflux? I feel like my son's is getting worse.

  • My pedi said it can last up to a year, but most last 6 months.

    image
    image
  • Specialist said worst at 3-4 months when they are rolling over & wiggly (more pressure on abdomen), but better by 6 months when sitting up unassisted.
  • @Holljade‌ have you tried a different bottle? I posted earlier about my ds's freak outs at the bottle and switching bottles made a HUGE difference! That may help. I totally understand the weight gain frustration. Hugs.

I think my LO is backwards. He does better and spits up less when we pop a paci in right after his bottle and keep him reclined for about 30 min. If we don't as soon as we sit him up or try to burp him we get major vomit.

  • DS is 3 1/2 mo and 15 lbs and we do 1 ml twice a day.

I am with you guys on tummy time. It is hard because he almost always spits up while doing it. He seems to be waking up earlier from naps though so I try to do tummy time then before he's got a full stomach.

  • We have tried a few different bottles- it's weird bc he used to tKe a bottle- I've been giving him several bottles a week since he was born but the last few week he just randomly started refusing

  • How old is your LO? 11 weeks
How long have you known about the reflux? Took him in at 1 month after large volume throw up
    Bottle fed or breastfed? BF
What do you do to manage the reflux? Doctor won't give meds unless severe. I'm okay with it. We keep upright for 20 minutes after every feeding. Meds? I recently purchased some Colic Calm. Cured his hiccups. We'll see if it helps his fussiness.
Your daily struggle? He's pretty much in our arms all day long. We have a Baby K'Tan but it's still hard. He can be fast asleep but as soon as we put him down he wakes up.
Any questions? Tips for car rides? That's our biggest problem right now. He cries so much and the only thing that helps is to take him out of the car seat.

  • Wow that thing looks scary. I would be afraid of LO falling out or something

  • Have any of you tried Enfamil AR?
  • I haven't tried it, but a friend of mine likes using enfamil AR for her son. You could give it a try!

  • Heard this tip elsewhere and thought I'd pass it on: if your LO likes to try and spit out his medicine like mine does, try blowing gently on his face while giving it to him. It'll trigger a reflex that makes him swallow. Tried it yesterday and worked like a charm!

  • @strawberrytee I'll have to try that!

@ImnAtari I have been trying to figure that out too. I use a wipe if he spits up bad, but they still look icky.

  • Is the prevacid working for any of your babies? Idk if he needs a dose increase or this is just how prevacid works. He still spits up a lot and cries when he does so because is the pain.

    image
    image
  • Prevavid increased the number of choking episodes for us, so we stopped it and went back to just Zantac. I read that Prevacid can take 2 weeks to start working. Which is like a lifetime when dealing with reflux! Both meds should prevent the burning, but neither will stop the refluxing itself.

Side note: We tried Enfamil AR this weekend & his spit up disappeared. It is thick & must sit better than oatmeal added to BM.

how do you guys clean your car seat straps?? goomba always spits up in her cat seat and theyre starting to get pretty ugly :(

Had to scrub the straps with very hot water & a wash cloth. But we were trying to get poop out rather than vomit. Lol

  • I know this isn't reflux related, but dots anyone's LO have mucousy poop. We know he had an intolerance to cows milk and soy, but he is on alimentum which is hypoallergenic. It's not all the time, maybe once every 2 or 3 days. Normal? I keep forgetting to ask the pedi.

I put a bib on L outside the car seat straps to help reduce the amount on them.
I do that too @honeyzoo‌ my MIL hates it though. I don't know why.
