Three hour glucose tolerance test?

With my first pregnancy (two years ago) I went to a normal ob and around this time they had me do the one hour glucose screening. They said if I failed I'd have to take the three hour. I passed with no issue and that was that.
This time around I'm going to a perinatologist (the only office in town that is VBAC friendly) and I don't know if that's why they do things differently but they want me to skip the one hour and go straight to the three hour test. I have no health issues, nothing in my urine, no indicator that I would have any trouble passing either test. I'm pretty bummed that I have to subject myself to fasting, extra blood draws, and paying for over three hours of babysitting for basically no reason.
Anyone else going through this?

Re: Three hour glucose tolerance test?

  • My ob's practice now does the 2 hour test as standard protocol.  You don't waste time having to re-test.

  • I didn't do the 1 hour or even know about it. I am doing the 2 hour this week. 3 hours seems excessive...

I would ask them why they are asking you to go straight to the 3 hour test. Usually it's 1 hour and then 3 hour if you fail the 1 hour or the 2 hour test.

I had GD with DS1 and detested the 3 hour test so much that I was considering skipping it if I failed the 1 hour test this time around. (luckily I passed).

  • My OB does a 2 hour test. That way if you do fail, there is no need for a 2nd test.
  • It's probably standard practice there, but that doesn't mean you have to do it. Press for alternatives. Make the case you made to us to them, and see if they'll accept the one-hour screening as an alternative.

I'm currently working with my midwives to the same ends, but for different reasons. (I don't tolerate huge quantities of sugar dumped in my bloodstream very well, and the longer tests contain 25-50 grams more glucose than the shorter screening.)

Anyway, it's your health care, and you've got choices!
