Temping...where do you put it? (Sorry for novel)

Hey ladies,
So I'm relatively new to TB and I've read the new member blog, also done a few FF tutorials but I have a quick question: originally I thought "temping" was vaginally but on FF I saw there are several options: vaginally, orally, rectal. I'm probably not into rectal lol but which do you all recommend? Or if you have tried both which is more accurate? (I am definitely an open mouth sleeper which I saw may also effect my temps) A little history/info: DH and I have been NTNP for a while but this is my first official cycle temping and using OPKs.
Thanks in advance :)

  • The above is very good advice. I always temped orally, but I never breathe with my mouth open because I sleep on my stomach and I guess I just never open my mouth. Whichever way you decide, stick with it.

I temp orally and haven't had any problems seeing a shift, but if you are a mouth breather you may be better off temping vaginally.  Which ever option you choose, don't switch in the middle of a cycle.  Good luck.

  • I temp orally. I can't get with the idea of sticking it up my vagina at 5 o clock in the morning. I also am not a mouth breather so it works for me.

  • I temp vaginally but I'm a mouth breather. I'm not really sure how far I should be sticking it up there tho...

Just far enough that outside air won't interfere.

I'm not a mouth breather but I have bad gag reflexes, & sticking a thermometer under my tongue is one of my many gag triggers.  So I chose to vag temp right from the start.  I stick it far enough to where my thumb sits right before the reading window portion of it.  Seems to work just fine.

I'm sure this goes for orally as well, but make sure to wash it every day, little soap & water, sanitizer if you feel necessary, & keep it capped/enclosed in something clean.  Don't want any infections.

I know you *can* temp anally, but I've never heard anyone do it for TTC....
  • I temp vaginally.... I find that my temps are more accurate that way.

  • I temp vaginally. My chart would be an even bigger mess if I were trying to temp orally. Plus my tongue hates if I try to stick something under it (maybe because of my tongue tie?) and my vagina is way more forgiving.
  • Great! Much appreciated ladies, my thermometer & OPKs will be delivered today or tomorrow so I'm very excited to begin TTC the right way lol
    ;)
  • I'm going to tac my question in here.
Is it the same kind of thermometer for both? Or do I need a specific kind for vag?

  • Nope, just a BBT thermometer. The regular ones aren't designed to help w TTC
  • I started temping vaginally this cycle and I like it a lot better.

  • I started by temping orally but never got a good shift that confirmed O. When I switched to vaginally I get a clear shift and don't have to worry as much about time of day now.

  • Omg! I LOVE these responses, I was hoping for some exciting answers lol!
  • I asked my midwife what I should do cause I sleep with my mouth open she said temping orally should be fine. I've been temping for 7 months and notice an obvious shift.
