Milk or soy intolerance/allergy?

LO had a green mucousy stool with red streaks. He has had mucousy stools of varying color off and on. The first time with what looked like blood streaks last night. Also has a rash. He's breastfed with nighttime formula supplementation that contains milk. Pedi on Saturday (we went in to eval the rash) gave us alimentum and nutramigen samples. Anyone with experience with milk or soy allergy? Would it make sense to try soy formula and cut out milk first and then the alimentum/nutramigen if it doesn't work? How strict do I have to be about milk/soy avoidance? Eg how about bread made with butter or milk? And anyone whose kids grew out of the intolerance or does it last? Freaked out after seeing the blood :(

Re: Milk or soy intolerance/allergy?

  • No experience but blood isn't good. Sorey to be honest. You need to see the doc. It's probably an intolerance. Good luck!

  • I had to go on a dairy free diet for LO. I cut out anything with dairy. I have continued to eat bread though without any problems.

  • I think it's 40% of kids with milk intolerances that have the same problem with soy. With DS1 I wasn't told to avoid soy completely but not to replace my regular milk with soy milk. If the pedi wants you to try the hypoallergenic formulas then that is what I would do. I think DS was 7 or 8 months when we tried yogurt and he was fine. Many outgrow it by 6-9 months and most outgrow it by a year. I had cut dairy at the beginning with DS2 (and I'm thinking I might need to again) and I was just unable to find a decent cheese substitute and a replacement for drinking a plain glass of milk. I found a great butter substitute and cream of chicken (pot pie) recipe that I liked even better than the real deal.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • I EBF. I was told to cut out both. I cut out soy (which I was eating/drinking more of than dairy) and we haven't had an issue since.

There was never any blood in his stool though, just green explosive/frequent stools with a nasty diaper rash.

  • Thnx all. Saw pedi today and we will cut out both and supplement with nutramigen. Hopefully that will solve it!

I just wanted to suggest checking out the MSPI check-in in the BF board.

This is our second experience with MSPI. with ds1 I was wasn't well educated and after 3 weeks of pumping while giving nutramagin, ended up just switching to formula because DD1 would still have blood when I would BF again. It can take up to 6 weeks for the proteins to leave LO's system so don't be discouraged if you are following the diet strictly and symptoms seem to come and go for a little while.

I cut dairy and soy with DD2 @ 3 weeks. It is more work because a lot of prepared foods have m/s, but once you get used to it, it is manageable. I make my own dairy free bread, buns, etc. Earth balance makes good creamer and butter substitutes. Enjoy life makes good chocolate chips. Also Lo's have different tolerance levels. I've also cut out things with "natural flavoring" but others do okay with small amounts/cutting obvious sources.

Dd1 outgrew her MSPI by about 10 months and was able to transition to soy formula (thank goodness that specialty formula is expensive!) and then whole milk and milk products after she was a year.

  • DD2 had MSPI, we didn't have luck with Nutramigen and had to move up to prescription formula. The good news is that she outgrew it by 1.

DD3 is currently receiving BM and has a dairy intolerance. I've only cut out obvious dairy, but found done great resources on mspimama.com.
