Adenoid removal surgery?

My DD is getting her adenoids removed on July 14th. Hers are very enlarged and basically need to come out. It's a very simple procedure from what I have been told. Anyone have any experience wih this? I don't recall anyone talking about their June babies needing it done, but perhaps one of your other children?

Re: Adenoid removal surgery?

  • A little guy I nannied for in college got it done when he was three, and it went great! For him, it was a very basic recovery. FX for you all!

  • DS 2 had it done. Very easy recovery. He wasa little out of it day 1, but back to normal after that.

  • I take care of several kids a month pre and post-op who have this procedure. It's usually a very easy recovery- tired for the 1st day and then limited activity after that. The most important thing is to keep an eye out for bleeding at home, 7-10 days are high risk for bleeding as the "scab" falls off.
  • Thanks everyone for the info! My LO is getting it out because of significant congestion and coughing issues. She always has a runny nose! Her ENT doc said that most, if not all, her symptoms will go away post surgery! So I am kind of excited. But it's still surgery on my baby so I was curious about others experiences.

I had it done at 3 or 4 (don't remember exactly). Other than freaking out about the needle they needed to use to knock me out (I bit the nurse and kicked the doctor...they finally used gas instead) I don't remember anything bad! Lots of movies and ice cream...that's what comes to mind. Don't worry!

  • @JessicaKS‌ how did you get your doctor to move further into this decision? Grayson has had a cough for the last 4-5 months, he's always breathing through his mouth unless he has a binky in, he always sounds congested, and snores. His doctor prescribed Flonase and see if his nasal passages are just dry. He's been using it for 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed anything get better. He's actually sleeping worse than he was before.

  • @ColieAnn31‌ - we had been talking to her pedi about the issues (congestion, snottiness, coughing) and she suggested childrens Zyrtec (allergy med). She also referred us to an ENT. The ENT prescribed Nasonex. After Abby took Zyrtec since beginning of May and Nasonex for the past month with no improvement, we went back to the ENT for a follow up. The ENT used a camera scope to look at the adenoids, and said they are very enlarged and 75% obstructive. He strongly recommended surgery! I'd be happy to share more. PM me.

(My non medical advice is that it sounds like your LO might have an adenoids issue as well!). The symptoms sound identical to ours but A is sleeping fine through the coughing somehow.
  • Thank you so much. I'm going to make an appointment next week to talk to his doctor about it. The Flonase doesn't seem to be doing anything so I don't want to keep using it if it isn't going to help him. Hopefully we can get this figured out for him!

  • I had it done when I was a kid. I was groggy for a day from going under and that was it.

  • J had them removed last month when they out tubes in. He was groggy coming out of surgery and I cried seeing him so out of it but my the next morning he was back to normal. He has been doing so much better since they were removed. Doctor said he had a lot of gunk and it was most likely affecting his hearing
