Special Needs

Intro

Hi ladies. New to this board. My son is 9 weeks old and we had a very traumatic birth. He was born oxygen deprived and stayed in the NICU for 5 weeks. We are home now but he had to have a gtube and fundo because we couldn't get him to eat. His MRI also showed that his motor skills might be effected as he develops because of the oxygen deprivation and brain swelling that took place. Looking for any support we can get. :)

  • Welcome!

My 9 month old DS was oxygen deprived during delivery as well and spent 12 days in the NICU for respiratory distress and was on supplemental oxygen for 6 weeks. He has global delays, left sided weakness, FTT and possibly feeding/aspiration concerns. We are just starting on the road to therapies, treatments and diagnosis.

What is FTT? I hope you get the answers you need so you can begin treatment.

  • Welcome! I am sorry about your LO's difficult entry into this world. My DS1 had a traumatic delivery but it was because of his genetic disorder (that we didn't know about). Eta FTT is failure to thrive

  • Welcome. Do you have a good gi doc on your team? Your little one. Is so little. Are you getting rest?

We've just been referred to a GI doc.. Im hoping he can start to give us answers. My poor DS has so many gas issues and is gagging at least once a feeding and usually a few times in between. He had a fundo so can't bring anything up but I can hear him fighting back the liquid sometimes. I'm thinking he might need different reflux meds but I'm not sure. As far as rest goes DS sleeps great through the night because of a continuos feeding. I wake up to change the formula halfway through the night and several times to check on him but the nights are not too bad. I worry about the tubing in his bed.

  • Hello, and welcome.

My younger son, J, had a traumatic birth, possible oxygen deprivation, and pneumonia immediately afterward.  He is now 7, and has suspected asthma (although he has never had an attack), apraxia of speech, and a language based learning disability.  If you ask anyone, though, they'll tell you he's a rough-and-tumble boy who loves swimming and seriously holds his own while playing football, baseball, and soccer with his older brother.
