February 2015 Moms

whens the right time for baby shower?

My friend just asked me this today and I just realized with a early feb due date...potential baby showers coincide with the holiday season...I think anyways...don't baby showers normally happen around 7 or 8months? Is it "rude" or even a good idea to have a shower right before christmas or new years when people are likely traveling? Anyways does anyone else have a date in mind already?

Re: whens the right time for baby shower?

  • Anywhere from 6-8 months is pretty normal. You could do a mid-November shower, that way you wouldn't be competing with all the holiday parties. Kinda falls in a rough spot, though!

  • We aren't doing a shower since this is #2 for us, but I would shoot for November or January depending on when your due date is. December would be fun, but would probably be hard to schedule.

I was thinking about this too- I think early Nov or just after Thanksgiving. Waiting until after the holidays would make me too nervous!

  • I would like to do November after thanksgiving cause then I have family in from out of town who can join in! But not sure if that's to early seeing I'm not due till February!
  • If you are due towards the end of February then i would try for a mid January shower. If its the very beginning maybe late November.

  • If I were having one I would do about 4-6 weeks before my due date. I had one with my first and felt like it was way too early (about 12 weeks before I was due). With my second, a group of my close mom friends did a surprise lunch for me at one of their houses. They each gave me a small gift (a pack of diapers or some bath stuff, etc). There were no games or anything. Just a little sprinkle. Anyway, that was 4 weeks before I was due and it felt much more appropriate to me.

  • I was just thinking that! Not only do I worry about the timing with the holidays, but weather also, I live in the Chicago area, you never know!
  • For my first, my showers were at 32 and 34 weeks, in late January and early February. (I wound up delivering 2 weeks after my second shower, so thank goodness it wasn't later!)

I had a friend who was due in late January and we threw her a shower in November, shortly before Thanksgiving so that we didn't have to worry about holiday parties and events conflicting.  So it depends on when in the month you're due.  If you're early Feb, I'd go with before the holidays.  If you're late Feb, you can probably go with early January.

  • We are going to do an early-mid November Baby Shower.  Since we are having twins the rule of thumb is to have everything ready by week 28.

  • I know that my mother-in-law and my mom are throwing me baby showers, but are doing them separately. My mother-in-law wants to do it at the end of October or early November. She wants to avoid the holiday season. (Yes, she is already planning. She's asking me about food dishes and to give her a list of my friends that I would like to invite.) My mom hasn't mentioned anything, but she will probably do something after the holidays, so in January. She is a tad bit of a last minute planner...lol

you shouldn't be involved in planning your shower. Its the job of whomever is throwing it. Relax mama :)

  • This is #2 so no shower for me but with DS I had it early Nov and I was due Jan 2. It worked well for us and I was actually glad to have more than enough time to get all the stuff out away, clothes washed, exchange duplicate gifts, etc. I'm a planner though :)

  • I'm not even hoping for a shower. This is my 2nd child and really I'd rather go out an buy all my own things so I don't feel like a burden on anyone. I do have a registry but thats only for me to have a visual list of what I need to buy for myself.

  • My DD was born mid-january and yeah it was really hard trying to coordinate a baby shower in with people's holiday schedules. I ended up having it the same weekend of Thanksgiving because that was the time I was going to be in town visiting my close friends and family, but it really sucked because a ton of people couldn't make it (I live in New England and my family is all in NC). If it were me having my first LO this time, I'd have the shower in January after all of the holiday hoopla is over and people are not doing anything.
  • I've chosen January 3rd for my family and close friends one in North Carolina. The final Saturday of my winter break (all teachers friends will appreciate that). I'll probably have one thrown by my coworkers sometime in December or January. We can't help when we're to, the people that matter will attend!

  • We are having our around Christmas just because my brother and his family will be in town. I'm Hoping it won't be too inconvenient for people, but I know the people I really want there will make time.
  • My mom is already planning for late October or early November only because we're super busy before then and my whole family is always out of town for the holidays. I'm too nervous to wait until January because my son was born 3 weeks early and I don't want my water to break at my baby shower lol

When I was pregnant with DD1, my shower was December 9th. She was due February 28th. No one seemed to mind that it was before the holidays, and since we're in PA, it assured we wouldn't have a snow storm we typically see during January and February. And it was a Sunday afternoon so it didn't overlap any holiday parties. Hope this helps!

  • I'm thinking early November. I'd like it to be done before the holiday season starts, even though I think it's a little early for my 2/10 EDD. But doing it in January seems too late....

  • We're thinking mid November. Just seems easier and we don't have to worry about the holidays being in the way, as others have said.

  • My mom and mother in law are already planning as well. We're booked for 11/22. I'm kinda glad they're on the ball since the dates surrounding that and all through January were already booked! Crazy!
  • I think 32ish weeks is ideal because it gives you time to fill in the gaps before delivery.  Especially for my Type A personality, I delivered DD at 37 weeks.  If I had a shower at 36 that would not have been enough time to get everything we needed.  Relative to the holidays, I agree with PPs, if you are early Feb, I might do November, but late Feb, January.

thanks everyone...based on all the feedback and talking it over with my friends im thinking im just gonna go with early nov...that gives us time to purchase whatever we do not receive at the shower and as my friends pointed out (they are an honest bunch lol) having a shower right after everyone has spent a ton of money during the holidays is kind of risky...i get their logic so yes even though i think its just a TAD bit early i do think its the best option with our family having a history of early delivery!

  • I had mine at 30wks and I think that's a good time! You aren't too uncomfortable so you can actually enjoy yor shower and you have time afterwards to return or swap anything from your registry, and pick up anythjng you didn't recieve, and set up the nursery. Wash clothes and put away.. Set up any swings, bouncers, monitors... I think it's just better to get it done sooner rather than later. For us I went into labor less than 3 weeks after so I'm so glad we had it early and everything was done!

  • I think they normally occur around 7 months.  I know this puts us in December so I was thinking of having mine in November (Also because I wanted to have mine outside and the weather here is still decent in November).  You don't want too have it too late where you're really huge and uncomfortable and many babies are born weeks early.  Or you could do it early December before things get too holiday cray.
