Clogged Duct

Ughhhhhh. I have one. So sore. I've tried heat, massage, pumping, hot shower, nursing more on that side. Not much is helping. Or did I miss something? I read kellymom :(

Any out of the box tips?

I have one that turned into a Mastite (with feaver a lot of it). Someone said to try hot water and ginger steam (with your head and breast over the bowl) I don't know if it's THE solution that worked for me (I tested many) but I think it can help. My problem is that I have is a decrease of production (both sides) ? Is that normal? I am on antibiotics.

  • Mine turned out to be a "true block" which was much easier to fix. I hadn't heard of that before and wasted a day in pain trying to cure myself the same way you are. Any white dots on your nipple?
  • No :( I keep looking for one because I did read online you can squeeze it. Hurts like he'll but it will solve the problem in a quick pinch.
  • DS has his two week check up Wednesday so if it still persists I'm going to ask for a script for mastitis in case.

I had one of those, a milk blister. Squeezing didn't work, though I was squeamish about it and didn't try too hard. LO eventually sucked it out, she can be pretty aggressive.

Sorry about the clog, those are so uncomfortable! It sounds like you're doing everything you can, it just takes a little bit of time. Keep massaging, even while feeding. I hope it resolves soon!

  • I've had mastitis and a few clogged ducts. I've found that taking a hot shower and massaging the breast in the shower and then having LO feed heavily on that side to help remove the blockage works. If they need more than 1 feeding to remove the blockage then icing the breast for 20-30 minutes after feeding relives a lot of swelling. It feels amazing on the breast too. GL!

  • Sounds dumb, but my sister in law suggested pumping or feeding on all fours--- it helped clear mine. I guess gravity is a great help.

  • I tried the all fours haha. I read it works too. DS wasn't cooperating so I hope to try again later lol
  • Can you still feel the lump? Sometimes the area can stay sore for a day or two even after the clog has broken up. That was the case for me about 3 weeks ago.

  • No, lump was gone after my hot shower and quick pump this AM ... hmmm. Its just sore on the top of my breast. Almost like a pulled muscle feeling.

Hopefully that is the case! These suck.
  • No new advice but I did want to add that mine seemed to get better, then got worse again. It was a couple days before it was back to normal again. I just did heat, massage, and lots of nursing on that side. Hope it is feeling better soon!

This. I had a clogged duct this morning and I massaged it really hard in the shower. Then I got a really hot facecloth and placed it over the hard spot while I was pumping and massaged it. I thought I still had it because it was still sore afterwards. But by the time it was time to pump again the lump and the pain were gone, I think it was just sore from all the aggressive massaging.

This. I have had 3 of them total, each time I massages the lump out vigorously, (and wow... PAINFULLY) under very hot running water in the shower. I fed first, then pumped then went to the shower. You have to be rough on it. If it don't hurt, it's not working. lol. Do this for about 10-15 minutes off and on and try to express milk while doing so. It will stay painful and even bruised for awhile afterwards. Sometimes 48+ hours after.

You're not kidding about the painful part. I had multiple clogs in both breasts and massaging them out actually made me queasy and teary eyed. Just remembering it makes me feel a little shaky.

  • Oh my. Hugs to everyone!

I'm sore. I think it came down this am with a feed as I felt a big let down at the end. I'm hoping it was it!
