Pregnant after IF

Leaving RE early for MFM?

Hi ladies, c/p on HR board.
At 5w I was diagnosed witha 1.4cmx1.4 cm SCH. I put myself on bedrest/ pelvic rest and when I went in 4 days later the SCH was a little smaller. My RE said no sort of bedrest or pelvic rest was needed, just to live my life. A week later (yesterday) I went in and at 7 weeks pregnant the SCH had grown to 2cmx2cm. My RE still claims no sort of limitations are needed. I called a MFM that I had seen during my last pregnancies and I'm waiting for a call back to see if he thinks I should get an early release from my RE. I feel bad, like I'm going behind my RE, but I don't feel like this is where his specialty lies. Has anyone left REs and gone on to an MFM early on in pregnancy? Was I wrong to try to switch?

Re: Leaving RE early for MFM?

  • So w my SCH in my first one it came about 6 weeks too, I had already seen my regular OB bc of bleeding and I didn't know the rules about OB vs RE and release- but she (OB) told me to limit strenuous activities and not business as usual. I don't think my Recever said anything except for that since I had already seen her I should follow her advice. I don't know if this helps or not, but I think rest would be better than business as normal. I bleed on and off til about 13 weeks (I think I was back to regular schedule around 9 weeks bc it had calmed down). I hope it gets better soon- follow your gut- if you don't think you should do it, don't. Good luck!

  • Thanks @Momarazzi007‌! When I called the MFM yesterday it was sort of an impulse decision, and now as I sit and wait over the weekend I've been wondering if it was a good idea. I don't even know if the MFM will want me released to him this early. But after hearing my REs views/ treatment on SCH I can't help but feel like I should be looking elsewhere for care. I've just got to do what I can to try and keep this pregnancy.

  • I see nothing wrong with asking the MFM if they will see you. It does seem shocking that the RE isn't telling you to take it easy with the SCH..

  • I know, it completely boggles my mind! I've had three appointments with him since the SCH was found and every time I ask him point blank about bed rest and pelvic rest and last time he told me " say a prayer and live your life is all you can do. I know for a FACT bedrest doesn't work. It might make you feel better but that it". And honestly I respect and admire my RE so much he's helped us achieve two beautiful children and another on the way.. But I don't think he's the best fit for the baby and my needs. I don't even know if a MFM will see me this soon, and if an RE would release me at 7 weeks. But I had to try.

I have a SCH too. My RE did tell me no sex, no gym, no lifting over 15-20lbs and take it easy, but he also said bed rest won't help. He told me he sees these all the time. I do think that you have to follow your gut. It's a bruise. If you had a serious bruise on another body part you would take it easy so I would think the same applies here!! Good luck.

Thanks @Hernsy‌. Even if my RE would have said what yours said I would feel slightly more okay with staying with him until end of first tri. But he gave me no limitations. And honestly, I'm a SAHM, I'm not looking to get "out of work". I've put myself on pelvic and bedrest since Friday and I will stay on it at least until my next appointment. What bothers me is that if it wasn't for my insane amount of googling and realizing almost everyone gets put on some sort of limitations, I'd be out there running laps with my kids in a jogging stroller. I think we all look to our drs to give us the best advice and help possible, I feel like my RE has failed me in that department.

eTA: sorry if that sounds a little snippy. I didn't mean for it to at all, clearly Posting as soon as I wake up is a bad idea, lol! wish my RE had as much common sense as yours did.

@morgs8384 - no worries - if mine had said nothing at all, I think I would be even more worried too.  So no apologies needed!

Yea do not Google sch! It only causes undue worry. I had one that caused a lot of bleeding at 6wks I was on low dose aspirin and of course as soon as I saw blood I stopped taking it even before me RE told me to. My re told me to take it easy while I was having bleeding. No special instructions other than that. He actually didn't seem worried by it at all. But the next week it did get a little larger and was still present until my last apt yest. My bleeding completely stopped after I came off the aspirin, I didn't do any heavy lifting, but still didn't refrain from any activities such as sex, as long as I wasn't currently having bleeding. They are very common and most of the time do not cause any harm to baby and just reabsorb on their own. My advice would be to not worry yourself to much because it freaked me out at first! If your RE feels a cause for concern he will let you know :-)

  • I think you have to advocate for yourself, but I also had an SCH and my RE said to continue with my normal routine, just no sex or exercise. I honestly think that acupuncture helped reduce it more than anything else.

  • @CameraBug131‌ interesting you bring up acupuncture. I read yesterday that some women say it's really helped with their SCH. I called two local acupuncturists, the first one said she would not recommend it at all for SCH, which threw me back! The other one said while she can target a couple different points to reduce bleeding and risk of miscarriage she couldn't say that it directly treats SCH. How many treatments have you had? How long did it take to see some results from the acupuncture? Anything else I should know bout it? I've never done acupuncture, but would do it in a heartbeat if it helped my baby.

  • morgs8384 I began acupuncture before IVF to try and address fertility issues. I always thought "couldn't hurt." I continued during and after IVF. My acupuncturist didn't necessarily treat the SCH directly, but just general fertility and blood flow. I started about four months before IVF and go once a week. I had an SCH at six weeks and by eleven weeks it had largely dissipated, which is earlier than I had expected, based on what I read online.

You can't really feel the needles going in. I find it very relaxing!
