Mirena/Paragard and BF

I'm still BF my 17 month old and still haven't had my first PP AF. I see my OB for my yearly next week and really need to figure out my birth control situation. Right now, we are relying on condoms, which isn't enough for me. I don't usually do well with side effects from the pill.

For those of you who have Mirena and BF, did it seem to affect your supply? Are the side effects very bad? I know it will make me have a period, which sucks. :/

Anyone had Paragard inserted while BF and still no PP AF? Did you continue to have no AF? When AF did return, was it really heavy and crampy?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Mirena/Paragard and BF

  • i don't have any personal experience with this, but i recently saw a post about this on BFing expert dr. jack newman's page. apparently mirena, since it does release hormones, affects some women's supply even though the manufacturer says it's not "supposed" to. here's the post: https://www.facebook.com/DrJackNewman/posts/335542539930132

personally, if you haven't gotten your period back yet, i would just stick with condoms. once it is back, you can chart your cycles to further avoid your fertile times while still using condoms, if you want to be extra-careful.

  • I had the Mirena put in 12 weeks postpartum with my son and he's now 14 months.  I never had a drop in supply and we are still bfing.  I'm still waiting for my post partum period.  I haven't had any side effects.

  • I had the Paraguard inserted after both pregnancies at 8 weeks PP. I didn't have any side effects, no milk production effects and my period didn't return until I weaned from breast feeding. I LOVE the Paraguard. I've had it 3 times now with no complaints.

  • Thanks, everyone! I'm leaning towards the ParaGard, but I'm going to see what my OB has to say. Thanks again! :)
