November 2014 Moms

hit me with your girl names!

Okay, folks.  I feel like I've hit a dead end with names.  I *thought* maybe we had a name picked out; it was a family name that I wasn't 100% sold on when we were naming our twins, but I've kept coming back to it with this little lady.  A few nights ago as we were throwing names around, DH agreed to it.   Holy hell--shocking.  Well, it was short lived--I found out my co-worker who is due 3 days before us is naming her girl that.  I really would have no issues with using the same name if we weren't literally due 72+ hours apart.

So--lemme hear your girl names.  I'm desperate for some inspiration!!!!  ...and if you have any tricks on how to subliminally get your chosen name to be DH's "idea" that would be helpful, too!!!

What was the other name? so we have an idea of your tastes.

  • Our girls are Avery & Madelyn....Lily was the name that is now off the table.

I like vintage-y feeling names...DH likes more trendy names...trying to find the middle ground is tough.

I have a friend who just named her daughter Edythe. I think that is a wonderful vintage name! Plus the nickname Edy is adorable.

I love classic names too! Here are some that I love and can't use bc we are having a boy:

Amelia, Nora, Stella, Maeve, Marin, Julia, Elizabeth, Eliza, Mae, Lilah, Cora, Sophie (a bit more common now though), Elle, Ella, Kate, Isla, Molly, Sydney, Violet, Vivian, Rose, Juliet, Alexandra.

These names are right up my ally! ...now to get DH to buy in...that's the hard part!

  • We are naming our daughter Autumn Elizabeth but threw around Elyse, Adeline, Addison, Collette and Zoey.
  • My husband and I have so much trouble with girls' names! Our daughter is Esther, which is a family name and it was a compromise choice for us. It suits her really well though, so I am happy with it. If this one is a girl, we are going to have a hard time. We are trying to find a Hebrew name, but it is hard. I am pushing for Rivka, and he likes Tzipporah.

Some of the choices my husband has rejected: Natalia, Natasha, Tatiana (we both have Russian family members), Eleanor, Margot. I also like Alexandra, Emma, Petra, Mia, and Elizabeth.
  • I love the name Paige Madison or Madison Paige.
  • My husband and I are the same! Our daughter is Ava. We are most likely going with Amy this time if we have a girl. We also like Elizabeth but that is already our daughter's middle name.

  • We're going with Willa. It came to me in the middle of the night.

The same thing happened with my cat's name (Governor). Try to meditate on the baby tonight.

  • Our little girl name:  Rosalie Grace (I had initially wanted to go with the spelling Rosalee, but DH likes the -ie ending better and I'm not too fussed since I really just like the name in general).

  • if I have a girl I'm naming her Alaine Rosalee , had this name ready for 3 yrs !
  • I vote for Iris or Violet. Both beautiful names.

I am totally lurking because I was JUST about to post for girl name help! Names I love but can't get DH on board: Eliza or Charlotte We also both like Addison and he likes Kendall but I'm iffy on it.
  • I love vintage - our daughter is Grace Charlotte.

Names we considered for this LO: Cecily, Emma (but too popular IMO), Evangeline, Gemma, Eileen, Violet, Cora, Cordelia, Elle, Amelia.

We narrowed it down to Rose Abigail. We'll find out in 2 weeks if we get to use it! (Boy name is Cal William). Good luck and let us know what you decide! I love name threads.

  • We preferred more common names.  Here was our short list (yes, there was a much longer list):

    Sara
    Anna
    Chloe
    Caitlin
    Cora
    Nora

We chose Chloe.  <3  Also, I don't fully understand the not naming your kid the same thing as a coworker.  You didn't even refer to her as a friend.  This won't be an issue in a few years.  To be fair, I also see no problem with matching the name of a friend's kid--I have too many mom friends not too!  Almost every name is already taken.  I do draw the line at family, however.  :)

  • You guys are rock stars!!!! I'm definitely showing DH this thread because he doesn't think "vintage" names are making the come back like they are. He would soon have names like Payton or Harper-fine names just NMS-at all.

As for the whole coworker thing, I work in special ed at a public preschool with a pretty small knit group. My coworker is actually my co-sped teacher. We are kind of a "package deal", know what I mean? I would have no issues using the same name is it was a teacher down the hall instead of of my co-teacher. It just seems weird if we popped out baby girls 2 days a part and named them the same thing.

Keep 'em coming! You ladies have great taste!

  • Ah love the names being listed!! Seriously Amelia, Cora, and Ella are beautiful. Would use Amelia but my husband doesn't like it. We named our first Sabrina. We absolutely love it. There's some great suggestions on here your DH should be pleased.

  • Our girl names are Gracyn Reid and Lexington Grace
  • @flutterbuggie my niece is named Poppy. It suits her perfectly. I am a huge fan, but I am very biased.
  • Girls names are SO hard! We didn't know what we were going to name dd until the week before she was born. I also love classic names, and my husband loves more traditional but yet mainstream names. We are both teachers as well, so it was very important to us to chose names that we had no neg associations with, and names that we wouldn't see year after year. We went with Evelyn as first name and used hubby's nana's name (Avis) as middle name. It suits her so perfectly, and she loves it which is all that really matters.

This time we are having another girl, and we already (shockingly) have her name! She will have a double first name, Mary Maeve, and her middle name will be after my grandmother, Elizabeth.

    Other names I like:
Josephine (Josie is just so cute)
    Cora
    Mary Claire
    Maeve
    Elise
    Finley
    Hazel
    Isla
    Lorilei
    Vera
  • Could you do Lillian? Is that different enough? Or how about Lila?

    Other names:
    Elenore
    Rosalie
    Felicity
    Rosemary
    Cora
    Coralie
    Maisy
    Kay
    Geneva
    Isla
    Cassidy
    Vanessa (Nessie)
    Nora
    Clara
    Eloise
    Nellie
    Kendal
    Kennedy (neddy)
    Pearl (oh so cute!)
    Adelaide
    Saige
  • My favorite girl name is Everly but DH is totally against it.  I also really really like Poppy but I don't know if I could ever go through and name my child that.  I can just imagine a cute old lady named Poppy with blue hair who gets into fights with the other nursing home residents.  So cute.  Lol.

How about Penelope? I know someone who calls there little one poppy as a short name for Penelope @flutterbuggie‌
