October 2014 Moms

Hi there! What was your best registry item?

I am a FTM and am posting for the first time although I have been reading for a while :) I am 25wk1d and was really slow at getting excited about this pregnancy(almost in a "cold feet" sort of way), but have finally gotten over my nerves and let the excitement set in.

Anyway, we are going to register tomorrow and while I think I have figured out what NOT to put on the registry what are some items that you experienced moms would say are must haves?

Re: Hi there! What was your best registry item?

  • This isn't what you are asking, but don't register for any hats, blankets (with one exception), and clothes. You will end up with too much of that stuff without!

The only exception are Aden+Anais swaddling blankets.  They are absolutely amazing, and great for swaddling, carseats, and other things. We still use them in the crib with my toddler.

  • Completely agree on the Aden and Anais swaddle blankets. Boppy pillow was also a must have for us. If you are planning on nursing I suggest a bf'ing pillow.

  • If you can get them, IKEA burp cloths. They are HUGE, 100% cotton and very inexpensive.  We had a spitter and they were a life saver.

I also love the IKEA sheets. Elastic all the way around, so they fit really well on the mattress. We got the basic white ones and they were so easy to clean or sun when we had accidents.

DH says the Arm's reach co sleeper was his favorite. It was a handme down item, but it was so useful.

I second the boppy and would add a swing or bouncer seat. Hey are very helpful when you need to shower or cook. Also, it's easy just to think about what you need in the newborn stage, but dont forger to register for some things you'll need later on in the first year....highchair, exersaucer, gates ect.

  • Our swing was vital to our survival.

  • My life saver was the marpac white noise machine. It is a little more expensive than some other white noise machines, but it actually makes the noise rather than plays a recording. Great quality, just got a second one for this new baby. Overall, I just recommend getting some type of white noise maker for the nursery.

  • I registered for a 12 pack of generic BRU cloth diaper inserts, and used them for burp cloths, and they were phenomenal.  You just have to make sure you wash them a couple of times before using them.

Other advice: If you register for a tummy time activity mat thing with sounds or lights, make sure it is one where you can change the battery.  We had to return the one we registered for after about 2 weeks because the battery in the music piece died and couldn't be changed.

A sound/noise machine was pretty nice to have and definitely helped DD get back to sleep a lot when she was small.  We had the Cloud B Gentle Giraffe on the go - the one you could strap onto something - and we kept it strapped onto the outside of her top crib rail.

  • I came here to spread my wisdom and recommend registering for the Aden + Anais swaddle blankets but PPs have it covered. ;)

They are expensive but awesome.  We still use them with DS1 for naps when we're out.

  • I third the RnP. It was a life saver for getting some sleep!
  • Thanks so much for all the suggestions! We are hoping that our baby registry is less stressful than our wedding one which should be easy to do since we dont have to go to Bed Bath and Beyond
  • I love hearing from experienced mommies. I've added so much to our registry this week.  Just added a Boppy and aden swaddles.

OP, thanks for posting.  We registered last weekend.  I am excited for our swing, which is a must, bouncer, and pack n play.

Any recs on baby monitors?  I wanted an audio monitor, but none of the ones sold at BBB, where we are registered, got good reviews.  Is a video monitor worth it?  I hear horror stories about hacking.  We live in a top floor (4th) condo and own the roof, so we'd like a monitor that can work upstairs on the roof while baby is sleeping a floor below.  Thanks for any advice :)

For your situation, since you will sometimes be on a different floor from the baby, I think a video monitor is worth it. That way you won't have to keep going down stairs to check on him when he is crying.

I have the Motorola MBP36 and we love it! Their customer service is also awesome - ours broke and even though it was outside the warranty period, they sent us a brand new one.

Sorry, I'm having issues editing my earlier post.

Just wanted to add that I haven't had any issues with anyone hacking into the Motorola monitor nor have I heard stories about it.

  • If you feel like you are getting overwhelmed.  Check out Lucy's List.  It has a list of the most important items to register for and different brands in different price ranges.  It really helped me out, because i found registering very overwhelming!  Who knew there would be a million choices between baby bottles, to nipples.

The beauty of a registry is once you start one, you can always add on at home from your computer!

Good Luck and have fun !

  • Can this substitute for a RnP??

Or should I change this to something else?

    I registered for this swing:

  • I agree with everyone else, but we were also told before dd #1 to register for two car seats (big convertible, not infant). We did it but never thought anyone would actually buy them. Two groups went in and bought them for us, and it is awesome having one for each car and they are a pretty hefty expense.
I also love the wubba nub pacifiers and they are super cute so I think people like to buy them :)

  • I agree on registering for larger items.  I never expect people to buy things like that, but as PP said, sometimes a group of people will go in together and purchase the larger items and its SO nice to get them so unexpectedly!
