Comfort Foods for all 50 States

I came across this article, and thought it was interesting...
https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/comfort-foods-of-every-state-in-america-thrillist

So what do you think? Is it accurate for your state? If not, what would be better?

If you're not in the USA, what food would you most like to try? And, happy Canada Day to our Canadian ladies! :)

    Oh, I forgot to add...
I'm from WV, and pepperoni rolls are most definitely right on. They're in every gas station, convenient store, pizza place, etc. And, they're all delicious!

Edit: Also forgot to add that this list almost makes me want to road trip across the country while pregnant!

Where I live: New York- buffalo wings. Def tasty and yummy

My all time top comfort food: my moms baked macaroni (it's not like Mac and cheese)

  • Of course PA is a cheesesteak, and of course they chose PATS....bleh!

Side note, who are they fooling with putting a bun on that pork tenderloin sandwich?

The bun just means its socially acceptable to eat it with your hands haha

  • So the funny thing about PA is this. We have Philadelphia, which the comfort food of the cheesesteak is very accurate.

But because Philadelphia is such a big city, we forget about the rest of the state - namely the Lancaster/Amish area and they make some mean comfort food desserts!

BTW @nursesouder... We are both rocking the Wildwoods!!

"Mom and Pop" Shop Cheesesteaks FTW!

    Edit: Clarity
  • Funny NJ's is Pork Roll... I'm from Philly (travel to NJ a lot obviously), and I have a Pork Roll Sandwhich for lunch. Nom Nom Nom.
  • And this is why I love PA! CHEESESTEAK!!!!

But no, I don't feel VA's is right. I don't even think I've had a country ham biscuit...

  • I'm a pure bred Virginian, the ham biscuits are spot on! The ham here is sooooo good especially dipped in applesauce!

I thought the cheese steak choice was interesting too. I live near Pittsburgh, and it's definitely the pierogie in this area! (Which, ironically, they listed for OH.....).

Marylanders freaking love their crabs and crab cakes. I, however, as a native Marylander, do not like either.

Interesting - I didn't know Pittsburgh were pierogies. But PA is such a weird state. I should have mentioned Pittsburgh. But Pittsburgh and Philly are different, and then you have everything else in between.

I'm from Philly so obviously the Cheesesteak is true for me.
  • CbeanzCbeanz member
    Yes please.
  • Obviously the cheesesteak is THE state food of PA, but I don't think I would consider it a comfort food. I would have picked the soft pretzel, but that's probably because I'm craving one right now. I'm getting one as soon as I get off the plane in Philly this week.

Nope!  From Nebraska here, and IMO, cheese frenchees are nasty!!!  I don't know how they came up with that one . . . I think if you asked 100 people what a good Nebraska comfort food is, they'd almost all say Runza!

Lanatir - you've got me thinking about Runza all the time now!!!

A lot of foods on this list (esp the fried cheese curds!) are making my mouth water, though!!!!!
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

    SO MUCH THIS.

I immediately knew MA (where I live now) would be chowder, though a case could be made for lobster roll here too.  Also steak tips are served at literally every restaurant I can think of.

With NJ (where I was born and raised) they are spot-on with the pork roll egg and cheese, but FFS call it a "pork roll egg and cheese," not a "Taylor ham sandwich."  No one in NJ has ever heard of that.
^^ this made me LoL, so so true! They also said this: "affectionately referred to as a "Jersey breakfast" in the state" which I have NEVER heard it called either. lol.

I feel like for larger states like NY, there are so many regions that have a comfort food that doesn't apply to the rest of the state, so I guess Buffalo wings is the most accurate. In the North Country, though, I'd have to say either Olive loaf, fried dough, or Michigans (hot dog with chili and diced onions).
    OMG too many tickers...

My husband makes them at home since we live 5 hours away. Obviously not the real thing but they taste really good!

Mmmmmm, Primanti Bros! They are building a new location 10 minutes from my house, and I cannot wait! It's supposed to be open in time for football season! :):)
  • MN- Jucy Lucy seems pretty spot on to me! Not necessarily my go-to comfort food but my husband could probably live off of those burgers!!
  • NM- Green Chile Stew
I loveeeee green chile stew but I'm not sure if it's my go to comfort food. It's definitely a staple in my home, but if I had to pick I'd probably go with a Frito Pie. It's just something you need in your life if you're from New Mexico.
  • I grew up on the CA central coast, and I have to say that I very rarely ate fish tacos... Lots and lots of fish, but almost never in a taco. Maybe it was the specific area I lived in, but they just didn't seem to be as big a deal there as they're made out to be. I would say all Mexican food in general is more the comfort food there.

And I'm a little ashamed to admit this, but I've never had Key lime pie in my life. I've only lived in FL for a year, but I would think my native Floridian DH would have made this happen by now!

I'm from western PA, pretty far away from the Philly cheesesteaks.  Pork and kielbasa and sauerkraut in the crock pot with mashed potatoes on a cold winter day is probably more accurate comfort food in my area.  Then if you go a little further south into yinzer territory, pierogies and Primanti Bros.  But guess what else comes from our state...Hershey's chocolate!!

Hershey's!!! I live right around there. I'm going there for the spa next week.
So freakin jealous!  Hershey spa is on my bucket list!!  Of course I've been to the factory and the amusement park, but I definitely want one of those chocolate spa treatments some day!

I don't live in Pittsburgh (never have) but there is a Primanti Bros right down the street from me. I could definitely go for the tuna with fried right now!

@ACH831 - I wonder if it's a NJ regional thing. I have a friend from North Jersey that calls it Taylor Ham. I'm from Philly and have more experience with South Jersey and we call it Pork Roll?

  • Ohio here. Apparently ours is the pierogi? I mean, they're delicious and all, but I had never even heard of them until I went to college in northeastern Ohio (Clevelandish). There are a lot more people of Polish descent around there. But, I mean, I don't think I've ever seen pierogis in a restaurant or anything. I just occasionally buy the frozen ones from the grocery store. Which I now want. NOM.

  • SC is right on for being "comfort food" as shrimp & grits cause it's on EVERY menu at EVERY restaurant...but it's mainly in the lowcountry area. However, I dislike fish lol. I prefer pulled pork with mustard bbq sauce....omg. I'm drooling.
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • Ha!  So before I looked I was thinking to myself, "California doesn't really have a comfort food.  But I'm guessing it's tacos."  And yes...fish tacos it is!  We definitely have our share of fish tacos...at restaurants, at home...comparing different sauces, grilled or battered fish, cabbage or lettuce, cheese or no cheese...we sure do love our fish tacos!

  • Ok states I've lived in...

@efujan is right.  Nebraska should be Runza.

Wisconsin--  Cheese curds are about right.

Virginia...  I don't know what else it'd be, but I've never had a country ham biscuit.

Alaska-- Uhhh no.  King crab isn't something most Alaskans (that I knew, anyway) buy for themselves.  They fish for their own salmon and (if they have a big enough boat!) halibut.  But, really, the deep fried oreos from the State Fair are what people come from all corners of the state to eat.

I grew up right around there! Hershey Spa - BTDT :-)
  • Virginia's is pretty spot on. We always have country ham biscuits at every cookout, church function, party, etc.

You can also find them in breakfast menus at local restaurants.

I'm from GA, and peach cobbler is good, but when I think of comfort foods, I think of biscuits, grits, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. I guess I'm more comforted by salty, carby things.
