Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Making baby food while traveling

I will be traveling with LO when he is almost 7mths old. I'm not sure what his complete diet will consist of at that point and how much purées will be a part of his day. That being said Id like to plan ahead and have a baby food maker that does the job from start to finish since we will be staying in a hotel room with only a basic kitchenette. Steam, purée, etc. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Re: Making baby food while traveling

  • We decided that making food while traveling was just going to be an added headache. We opted to start introducing some organic ready made foods. It is so much easier. There are some good options with great flavors (I try them all before LO does).

My cousin traveled with her son and bright a mill with her. She said it was a real pain, but she is committed to making all of his food.

Someone at work recommends the baby brezza (spelling may be bad). Not sure how compact it is.

    Good luck!
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.

  • There is like zero reason to deal with making food while on vacation lol  If you're doing organic, buy organic purees.

How long will you be gone and where will you be?
I think there are a fair number of options that you could do without having to buy commercial stuff, if you want.
There are several foods that work really well as is - cut/peel and serve. Some include banana, avocado, papaya. Really ripe pear and mango can also be fork-mashed pretty easily.
Fruits tend to be a little easier for this.

If you are going to be near any restaurants, you may have more options. If you can find one that serves baked potatoes, you can get plain ones and give that to LO. We prefer sweet potatoes, but regular would work too.

If your hotel serves breakfast, you may be able to get yogurt as part of that. It can be harder to find Greek or whole milk plain yogurt though. Most hotels serve fruity sugary ones, so pay attention. But it you have a fridge in your room and there is a grocery nearby, it might be an option.

If you'll be going to restaurants, you can sometimes find more options but it can be hard to find places that serve plain whole foods, unsalted or otherwise spiced.

If you don't want to take a whole machine setup, you could also just take a hand grater. Some foods can be served raw if finely grated.

    Good Luck!

I agree with PP, just go with organic pouches. Ella's Kitchen is a good one that has no preservatives. Also by that time LO may be eating chunks of soft steamed veggies or soft fruits along with the purees.

If you'll have a fridge/freezer at your hotel room, maybe consider making all your baby foods ahead of time and freezing? Then you can take 3 to 4 oz portions for each meal with you.

If you're really committed to making your own baby food, maybe look into the Cuisinart Baby Food Maker and Bottle Warmer. Its got good reviews on amazon.

  • We're going on vacation at the end of July and I plan on making enough before hand and freezing it. It'll be in Ziplocs or Tupperware in a cooler with ice while we travel. Not sure if that's an option for you, but that seemed like the easiest solution when I thought about us going away for a week. And our LO is 6 months old and eats solids/purees twice a day. Usually a fruit and a veggie. I make everything and freeze it in ice cube trays and he gets 2 "ice cubes" at a time.

  • I'll be travelling by plane to the US so Id have to make it when I arrive. Seems like a major headache but since bfeeding hasn't worked out well for me, I'd like to at least make this work and not run to packaged food the entire trip :(

I made my own baby food for DS because I genuinely enjoy cooking, but when we went on a week-long vacation, we used jars and pouches. We had enough baby gear to bring along as it was.

Exactly this. The baby gets my homemade food when we're here, but when we go out of town it's just jars and pouches. Just look at the ingredients and make sure you feel good about what you're offering him.

    My DS loves Plum Organics.
