103 fever :(

DD has never ran a fever, even w/ ear infections so this is all new to me.In fact she seems to normally run a bit below 98.6 (like me) at her checkups etc. She just woke from her nap and her temp was 103.1 - she is all ruddy cheeks, runny nose and glassy eyes. We called her pedi and they wanted to see her this afternoon. She feels so hot everywhere, the poor thing :( We gave her motrin 5 hrs ago so it's not even time yet for more. She woke with a runny nose but no other symptoms of being sick.  Is there anything her doc can even do for her?

Re: 103 fever :(

  • he'll prob check for an ear infection.  Make sure to push liquids so she doesn't get dehydrated because the fever will burn up her liquids quick.  Try ice pops, jello (liquid, jigglers, or reg) and constantly put a straw to her lips to take sips.  Giada was hospitalized for croup with dehydration in Sept and she literally got dehydrated in 1 day so they are very important.  I hope she feels better quickly!!!

  • Mine always says to call them if the fever last more then 48hrs or other symptoms arise. And even then when I take him in they usually say "eh, its just a virus that has to run its course."

    good luck!

  • Not if it's a virus. ?You can alternate Tylenol and motrin ever 3 hour too Motrin at 1, tylenol at 4, etc...). ?My dd gets some raging fevers. ?She hit 106.1 once...I almost had an attack and the dr thought it was no big deal. ?
  • Our practice is against alternating motrin and tylenol it is on the dosage sheet.  I also asked Welby because I hear it all the time on here and he said not to ever do it;)  There is such conflicting things between peds though so do what you think is right.  I never alternated though because I feel like I have to listen to her pedi.

  • thanks girls. I'm worried sick about her :(

Heidi I noticed on the pedi's tylenol dosage handout the warning about never alternating, I just always figured it was more or less to cover themselves b/c it can get confusing w/ when parents gave the last dose, which med etc. I've never tried it either though but have heard it can really help to break a fever since they work on different mechanisms...

  • Twice in her life Kate has had a fever for 5-6 days ranging from 103-105.  They checked her at the pedi for an ear infection, pnemonia, and a UTI, and when those all came back clear said it was a virus that had to run its course.  Turned out they were right and on day 7 she woke up feeling fine.  Just try to make sure she's drinking enough.  Kate never wants milk when she has a fever, so we let her have whatever she wants--ice pops, juice, jello, fruit, etc.  I also don't do the Tylenol/Motrin alternating--seems like too much medicine to me.  Motrin works better for Kate.  Hope your DD feels better soon.
