lost her birthday

I'm curious, do your kids know what a birthday is? I'm guessing this is less of an issue if they've already just celebrated one. We're not doing particularly well with the whole birthday concept over here. I think she thinks a birthday is a person. Or a thing. She gets that it's associated with presents and cake and balloons etc etc... but since we keep telling her that it's "coming soon" or "not here yet" when she brings it up, she thinks it's missing.

She even had a nightmare about it yesterday. Woke up bawling, saying her birthday was missing. Pointed accusingly at me saying "you find it!!!" I tried to tell her it's just a special day, etc, etc, but no, she suggested that I "go Costco and get it!" Right. And she keeps looking out of the window expecting it to appear. I'm afraid she's going to be disappointed when she wakes up on her birthday and no special person/ thing materializes!

  • Cooper knows the song (i usually have to sing it for EVERYTHING- the fish, toys, the dog...) and that he is having a truck party.
I'm impressed what a little smarty!

Wow I am amazed she can articulate all that. All Emmett understands about his birthday is we sing the Happy Birthday Song and now he says he is two. When ever he hears the word birthday, he breaks out in song. He does not understand the concept of years. He never even knew that he was one. We have just been practicing saying he was two for the last week. (He is not really even two yet.) I think it is adorable that your LO thinks her birthday is lost. It sounds like a story to write in a children's book. I can picture an illustration of her looking under the couch. I hope her birthday comes soon so she can find her birthday.
Haha, you're right, it would make a rather neat kiddie book. It's not so adorable though when people visit and she demands presents. That started a couple weeks ago ever since we told her she'll be getting some for her b'day. Really embarrassing. I'd much rather she broke out in song when birthdays were mentioned, how cute is that?

Oh, and no way does mine understand the concept of time either. Which is why explaining that a birthday is a special "day" is so darn impossible. She gets that she's one and will soon be two though, but obviously not in any real sense.

Cosette kind of got it I guess. I think it's adorable that yours thought it was missing. :) You have to write that down.   Cosette understood that it was Saturday and we did a countdown "2 days, tomorrow, etc."  She woke up and I said "what day is it today?"  She knew - but really it meant Cake and her friends were coming over to play. That's all. She knows she is 2 and a "big girl" now.
That sounds like she gets it alright. But then Cosette is such a clever clogs :) My kiddo has some interesting ideas about what will happen on the day. A few days ago she started calling it "my special day" (huh? I think that's from a Dora episode - she has no clue what it means) and then yesterday she informed H and me that we had to "dress up". H told her not to worry, he'll wear a nice t-shirt like this one, pointing to the old tattered thing he had on. And I spent last night making her the special hat she's been demanding. Oi.
  • That is so adorable!  Poor thing!  My kids sort of just understand a birthday is for hanging out with a bunch of kids, hitting a pinata, singing "happy to you" and eating cake.  They actually saw our wedding video and the part where we are cutting the cake and Liam was like "happy to you?" lol
