TTC After a Loss

Naturopathic Medicine Thoughts?

After two miscarriages and normal blood work, I am looking into the options. My miscarriages were about 6 months apart (6wks in Oct. and 8wks in April), I don't feel quite ready to see a specialist, however, I feel like I have to do SOMETHING! So I went to a naturopath who wants to start me on a regimen of standard process products. Ovex, ovatrophin, tribulus, and chaste tree berry. I have done a lot of research on this but still cant decide if I should go forward or not. My issue seems to be with sustaining a pregnancy and these pills appear to have more to do with ovulation.  Any opinions or personal experiences would be very helpful.  Thanks in advance.

I have hashimoto's disease, which is an autoimmune disease that affects my thyroid. I see a naturopath for that. He hasn't started me on anything for female issues yet, but i do take some standard process meds. I really feel like western medicine has failed me and naturopaths are so much better. I hope his suggestions work and the next time is the charm for you!
  • I've got to agree with @meladoriestar‌ and @snegde‌ here. And those who know me, know that I am a huge proponent of naturopathic medicine. However, I turned to my naturopath after my second loss and he did nothing more than extend my TTA period for months on end while focusing on the wrong issues. I gained no real insight into why I kept having losses, while wasting valuable time that I now realize I should have spent with an RE. Now I'm kicking myself for waiting for loss 3. By the way, I was on all of those herbs once upon a time - years ago, when I went to acupuncture for fertility. I spent 6 months on that herb regimen. Finally went to see an RE. Turned out, my ex-husband's SA showed complete MFI. I wasted many months and thousands of dollars trying to treat myself for a non-existent problem. Even as a late O'er, I was surprised that the herbs did nothing to shorten my cycles or move O up. If weak ovulation hasn't been identified as your issue, I'd look into having additional tests run at least by your OB. But know that an RE is often an option nowadays after two losses. GL!

    This.

My MFM told me flat out not to try anything (herbal or otherwise) without checking with her first.

I believe in holistic medicine assuming you know what the issue is. At this point without knowing exactly what's going on I would be very very weary of taking anything.

  • Thank you all for your replies. This all seems so overwhelming, I guess my common sense and logic have gone out the window. It seems so clear when you guys say it! I really appreciate your honest feedback. I have had blood work done on myself to check for clotting, genetic, or thyroid issues. It all came back normal. I have not had the  HSG, or structural tests, or SA or tests on my husband. You guys are right, I should stop wasting time and go to an RE.

I don't think it's really a question of wasting time but more a question of treating "something" that may or may not exist.

If you don't feel ready just yet to get additional testing done that's perfectly find. There really is no rush in all this. When you feel comfortable you can take an appointment or get a referral and speak to an RE about what he suggests is the best route here. I know that the testing is scary - we have no control over the outcome so naturally we create all the worst case scenarios. But, trust that a good RE will work with you regardless of the outcome to come up with a plan that you and your Dh are comfortable with.

    ((so many hugs))

  • Thank you both for the kind words and insight.

Pink Camino: You are so right I need to find the real issue to why I haven't sustained a pregnancy. I wouldn't take any western medications without knowing what was wrong with me first.

HoldingoutHope: I wasn't bothered by the whole "wasting time" phrase, it actually opened my eyes. I think I am in a little bit of denial over here. Time to move forward, even though it is scary.

I will talk to my OB again, hopefully get a recommendation for an RE in my area.

  • Personally I think naturopathic medicine is bull, no offense to anyone who thinks differently. Western medicine is evidence-based, and practiced based on scientific data. All medicines are approved via a lengthy, arduous process. Naturopathic medicine is none of those things. I think there is a place for massage, and sometimes maybe even acupuncture. But not herbs that are not scientifically proven (many medicines are herbs though!)

I obviously wouldn't recommend naturopathic anything. But if you do decide to take any type of herb, please please please talk to your doctor (of western medicine) first. Some of those things can be dangerous if they interact with things you're taking, or if you have certain conditions. I have seen them cause renal failure. Please don't do anything without consulting with your physician.

  • ((Hugs)). I saw a naturopath after our loss because my thyroid seemed to be out of whack but all my numbers fell in "normal" range for western med. My naturopath said he didn't like to recommend herbs and preferred to focus on diet as nothing was that bad yet. He put me on a higher protein/veggie and lower carb/processed food plan. I appreciated learning a little but about myself and starting on a healthier path with him, that has included acupuncture. That being said I wouldn't throw all my time (or money) that way because I honestly think it's only one piece of the puzzle. In case it helps he had "diagnosed" me as having adrenal gland fatigue and hypoglycemia (I already knew about that) and said those two things were taxing my thyroid and causing my symptoms. Good luck in whatever direction you choose!!

Herb DO have effective chemicals in them that may help an issue, but you have to KNOW what your issue is first.

It's like breaking your leg and trying to use mouthwash to fix it.
