Athena. Weird if we aren't greek?

My first name choice is Althea with the NN Thea but I recently heard the name Athena again and I am loving it.

Althea is a Greek name but for me it is not as obviously Greek as the name Athena. Is it side eye worthy to use the name Athena since we aren't Greek? I hope that all made sense. Haha.

Bonus Question! Would Thea still be an ok NN for Athena?

  • I would definitely think you're Greek but maybe only because I am? To me, it's "very" Greek, kwim? I love it though!

Athena is very Greek! Is Althea "very" Greek to you?

  • Less so to me. I've heard it before but I think to most people, they might not immediately Go Greek. In fact, I prefer Althea and love Thea! I'm scoping out my Grandmother's family tree for a Greek name we might use in a MN spot--wonder if anyone was Althea!!  ;)

  • I've known a few Athena's and not a single one was Greek.

I think I like Althea more than Athena too, and if you love use it...I don't think it should matter on the origin of the name!!!
  • I think Greek goddess but wouldn't assume that you were Greek, just that you probably like mythology.

  • I also prefer Althea just because I like it better. I also like Anthea. Both of those names are, to me, more British than Greek, at least by usage, because the only place I've seen/heard them is on shows/books involving the English upper class.
