Breastfeeding

breast pain?

DD is 4 weeks old and I have had random little shooting "pains" lately.  They aren't really painful, just twinges deep inside...if that makes sense.  I BF DS for over a year and don't remember having or not having anything like this.  Think it's normal, or do I need to get checked out?  Also, I have had random itching of my breasts since she was born.  I definitely didn't have that with DS.  It's mild, but annoying.

Last question, who do I even call about this?  I didn't have a normal OB, because I was high risk.

Re: breast pain?

  • is it happening when you're letting down? let-down can feel tingly or burning for many people.

shooting pains that actually hurt can be a sign of thrush.

you could see your general practitioner, but it might be a good idea to get a regular OB, since it's a good idea to go in for a yearly exam and pap smear.

  • I have some pain during let down, but this is in between feedings actually.

I should clarify that I do have an OBGYN, just didn't go to them at all with this pregnancy.  Would you still call them or should I call the hospital LC?

  • have you checked your LO's mouth? if there are white patches inside, you both probably have thrush. in that case, you could go to your child's pediatrician, and they will be able to prescribe a liquid medication for your LO, and also prescribe an antifungal cream for you to use on your nipples. otherwise, your regular OB should be able to call something in for you.

if the pain is not often or particularly bad, you could try a home remedy like a vinegar wash on your nipples after each feeding, or taking a probiotic supplement or a couple tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar each day. you can also use OTC yeast infection/antifungal cream.

  • I had something similar a few weeks ago. It was like a quick sharp pain but it would go away quickly afterwards. It wasn't during let down or during feedings by in between feedings. I was worried about thrush and the other typical issues. For me, it went away and i havne't had it since so i think it was "normal".

I ended up having it on and off for about 3-4 weeks before it went away.

I'm just trying to make sense of things :-)
  • yeah, i mean, thrush gets to be pretty painful. if it's just an unusual feeling but not painful, i'd just wait it out and see if it gets any worse or goes away by itself.
  • Thanks for the info.  I feel like taking the wait and see approach, since it isn't super painful...just mild shooting pains.  I'm just nervous that it will get worse over the weekend.  This stuff always seems to happen or get worse on the weekends.

I can't check her mouth now (she is finally asleep), but she does often have sort of white drool on her lips when she wakes up.  Haven't noticed anything that doesn't wipe away.
