Scary moment today (not pg related)

I was at lunch with one of my bosses today, and it was seriously taking forever. I finally looked at my phone and had four missed calls from my husband and a text telling me to answer my phone. I called him back to find out that DD had hurt herself roughhousing with my 15-year old SIL. She had been tossing DD on the couch and something happened. DD stared screaming and was inconsolable. H had just gotten home from working long hours, and he didnt know what to do. I told him to get her into urgent care. Luckily we have an urgent care clinic less than 5 minutes from our house - turns out DD dislocated her elbow! The doctor started doing x-rays because they werent sure if it was a dislocation or something else at first. H had to hold her in while they manipulated her arm. He said it was agonizing - she was screaming inconsolably. But while the doctor was moving her arm, it popped back into place and she had immediate relief. By the time I saw her you wouldnt even have known she had been in pain. My poor H though - he was exhausted from his work, and seeing her in so much pain really got to him. Even though she felt so much better he was really shaken up. Poor guy. I'm not sure how I would have handled it if I had to be there while they were treating her.

  • Glad she's getting a little relief now. How terrifying. Hope she's feeling 100% soon.
  • Poor baby! I know how scary that is. When my daughter was 4, I gave her nurse maid's elbow. :-( I was holding her hand, she dropped in a fit and it dislocated her elbow. That was a rough lesson for me to learn: let them drop. They gave her laughing gas tho. She was hilarious and had a strong country accent on the gas. She felt better immediately. Hope your little pumpkin feels better soon.
  • That sounds awful. Glad she is doing better.
  • Aw poor girl. Just FYI- they probably told you, but just be careful once a child has gotten nursemaids elbow/dislocation it makes them much more prone to get it again. Thankfully like you said it's an easy "fix" for them to put it back in but definitely scary.

Yeah, they did tell us that, and showed H how it could be popped back in, although I don't think either of us would be comfortable doing that movement! Hoping we can just prevent it from happening again.

Poor little girl! I'm glad she's better now that its back in place. :)

I grew up in a sling, it was navy with teddy bears all over it. My shoulder popped out of its socket a LOT. My brother would twirl me by my arms, and pop; my friend would pull me by the arm to go outside and play, pop.... It got to the point where the doctors started wondering if my parents were hurting me.

Was it painful every time, or did you get used to it? That sounds pretty annoying!

It hurt, but it didn't scar me for life or anything. Kids are resilient, so I'm sure she'll forget it ever happened. I didn't forget because it happened to me so often. But now I view it as a "fun" story to tell.

I would suggest that you just shy away from doing things like swinging her by her arms for a while.
