Second child-breastfeeding-caffeine intake-will my caffeine intake affect my infant?

I've never thought about it before, but now that I have a three-year-old, a two-month-old and a five-month-old puppy to take care of, I need a little bit of a boost in my day just to have the energy. My husband's a truck driver, so he can't help me as much as he'd like to. When making iced tea, I try to stick to the decaffeinated stuff, and water, but more than often, without thinking about it, I'll grab the regular tea bag, and i won't realize it until after I've poured my glass, It doesn't seem to be affecting my baby, but I don't want to overdo it to the point to where it will start affecting him through my breastmilk. I probably have one to two glasses a day, I don't know how much i caffeine i can even have while breastfeeding.

  • you can definitely have caffeine, it's just that you might want to cut back on it if you find it negatively affects your LO-- keeps them up, makes them fussy, etc. if that's the case, you can always have a caffeinated beverage right after nursing, so hopefully by the next feed some of it will be out of your system.

i would definitely not have survived this long without caffeine. ;)

  • perhaps give it a try and see what happens?  after LO was born i was really excited to finally have my lattes again.  that same day LO was fussier than normal and i attributed it to the caffeine.  DH finally talked me into trying coffee again a week or so later and it didn't seem to affect LO at all.  i think as long as you're not consuming large amounts it is okay.  i need to be able to have coffee especially when i go back to work or i will not get through the day/nights (sometimes i work nights)

  • I drank a lot of coffee while nursing my 2nd.  Didn't have any affect on him.

  • Oh, jeez, I have at least 2 cups of coffee per day, I just stop around noon. You're fine with some tea.

  • Another coffee drinker here.  I wouldn't make it through a work day in the office without it.  I experimented to see if it affected LO while I was still on maternity leave and it never seemed to matter.  I try to stick to 1 cup a day, but there were definitely days I had more.  As others have said, as long as you don't notice it affecting LO you're good to go.
