Pregnant after a Loss

Pain in my butt...talk to me about sciatica

So, about a week ago, I noticed that my lower back would get very sore if I had done a lot of walking during the day, spent too much time sitting, etc. It mostly went away until Sunday when I woke up and noticed that my butt felt bruised. Fast forward to today, and my butt hurts something fierce! I sat all day long at meetings and then walked about 10 blocks to meet a friend for a drink (club soda a lime ;) ). On the way back to my hotel - I'm in NYC for work this week, YAY! - I felt like I was not going to make it because my poor butt hurt so bad. The pain is in the same spot each time and goes away immediately if I sit down and will stay away for a while if I rest. Here's the question my brilliant bumpies....what is going on with my poor tushie? My first guess is sciatica, but isn't it a bit early for such things? Im only 15w5d today. I am going to call the doctor tomorrow if I am still not feeling bette but was hoping someone may have some insight and suggested non-medicinal cures :) Thanks dudes!!

I think it can happen anytime. I had a flare up around the time of my bfp---initially I thought I'd pulled a muscle. But it would reappear from time to time, then I realized it was probably sciatica. Also it was typically my right butt cheek & with the Doppler LO was always towards the right. Haven't had any trouble since about 14 wks now.

  • It sounds sort of like sciatica although mine immediately radiates down my leg. Stretching is really the only thing that works to help me, but i know others use ice or heat. I also find that a warm bath helps. Bug stretching is key to alleviate mine. Sorry to hear it's bothering you!!

  • Sciatica is awful. As others have mentioned, a heating pad works great. If you are able, there is a great stretch that can help. While sitting in a chair, cross your legs (the side that bothers you in top). Grab your knee with your hands and gently pull toward your chest. This gets harder to do to bugger your bump gets, but really helps to stretch the muscles around the nerve.

This is my exact experience as well.  My pain is on my left side.  Sometimes it will shoot down my leg, and make my leg almost "give out".  It sucks.  Sciatic pain has been one of my only pregnancy symptoms with each pregnancy... now that LO is bigger, it's getting worse, because he's actually pressing on my nerve.  (That's fun :P )  Fortunately, I can usually get him to move after awhile.  Sorry for your pain, but hey, you can at least be glad that the pain subsides when you sit!

  • Does sciatica feel like a giant bruise in your butt/lower back that someone keeps punching with all of their might.

Not to me. It feels like a stabbing pain going from my very lower back down through the middle of my butt cheek, sometimes into my upper thigh. If it's really bad I can't put weight on it. It makes it hard to change positions.

That's a really good description. I guess the punching I described is really more like a stabbing sensation like you said. Rediculous.

Is it weird that I somehow like it because it feels reassuring??

  • I have the pain as sell and it's not sciatica. It's probably your tailbone out of alignment. Do lots of stretches (stand and bend your leg so your foot touches your butt) and use ice as it's probably inflamed. Mine is killing me right one and I need an adjustment ASAP.
