When did you go into labor?

rmbrjryrmbrjry member
I just started my current job last November (2013). I knew we were hoping to TTC in the not too far future but my job doesn't offer maternity leave so I signed up for Aflac. I enrolled in Dec 2013 with an effective date of 1/1/14. I knew up front that they won't pay benefits for any birth that is within the first 10 months of the start date, but wasn't planning to TTC until July 2014 so I figured I was fine.

To make a long story short, I ovulated a week early this Feb and am expecting a lot sooner than I thought I would be. They have moved up my due date a few times and it is currently 10/31/14. I just spoke with my Aflac rep who said that as long as I deliver after midnight on 11/1/14 they will pay but if it's even 11:59 on 10/31, they won't pay anything. We are a single income household (mine) so if I don't get get my benefits I'll have to return to work pretty much immediately. My first was a c-section due to breech presentation. We are hoping for a VBAC this time around but now I will definitely have to VBAC since a c-section would be scheduled for before my due date. I'm starting to panic, though, about going into early labor.

For those of you who did a VBAC, when did you go into labor? Did any of you go into labor before your due date? Also, since my first was breech (she was head down until the day before my due date; then she flipped) I'm worried that this one will be, too (she was in breech position as of last Friday), I'm wondering if any of you had a breech baby that you either successfully flipped & VBAC'd or who flipped on their own and you VBAC'd?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Re: When did you go into labor?

  • With my second (my first VBAC), I went into labor at 41w3d and she was born the following afternoon. My third (also a VBAC) was born on her due date. None of my kids were breech, so I have no experience with that, but I can't imagine that the chances of having another breech baby are very high, so hopefully you won't have to deal with that again. Good luck!
  • SweetMelissa5 - Thank you! Very good to know.

  • With my first, went into labor at 41weeks exactly, DD born two days later. If they've moved up your EDD a few times (btw - why? the most accurate EDD is calculated based on the first u/s, they shouldn't move it based on later u/s), then I'd be surprised if you went early, unless you had a history of going early anyway.

If your provider pushes you to schedule a c/s, at least you have an unusual yet compelling reason to push that date back as far as possible.

  • cecilyandgautam - thanks for your comments. My OB initially had my due date as 11/7 based on my LMP but after my first ultrasound they moved it up to 11/2. However, we decided to get genetic testing done this time and it's done at a specialists office and my OB's office said they would take whatever date the specialist decided on. I had two visits with the specialists office and they gave me two different days, 11/1 and 10/31 at my two appointments. My OB's office said that they would just go with 10/31. Personally, I don't put a ton of stock into due dates because I know very few people who have actually delivered on their due dates. And although my OB pushes VBAC's, I know that if I had to have a RCS (for example, if she doesn't flip and stays breech) they would probably work with me. I'm mostly just worried that I will go into natural labor before my due date and am looking to see how common (or uncommon) that is. Thanks again!

  • My first was scheduled c/s at 39wk1d, but I went into labor at 39wk so had c/s then!

My VBAC attempt I went into labor at 40wk3d! So very different both times!

  • Foutzie44 - thanks so much for your input! Everyone where I work keeps telling me "the first is late, the second is early" which is so not helping :) Hearing that your second was later than your first is making me feel a lot better!

  • I don't have a link to the odds on going into labor before your due date for a second baby, but my first was breech, too.  My doc said that the first being breech isn't an indicator of later babies having a higher chance being breech and the odds were around 5% either way.  Like PP, I would not schedule your C/S, if needed, for 39 weeks or otherwise early. I'd only schedule for 40 weeks or later if it had to be scheduled due to breech or whatnot.

Same here, and to add to this, my doctors/midwives think that the second baby is even less likely to be breech because they generally have more room in there from your first kid stretching things out.

Here's hoping for head down babies this time!

  • With DD 1 I was induced at 40w due to GD and BP issues.  At that point I had no signs of labor and very little progress.  DD 2 was breech so we had scheduled a c/s for 39w, but I went into labor at 37w4days.  That probably doesn't help you  :|
