How long will/did you stay?

My doctor told us with DS that we can stay at the hospital for 3 days and 2 nights and she recommended staying the full amount since the second night is usually the roughest. This time around I'm torn about staying the whole time or just the first night. How long are you ladies planning on staying or did end up staying?

Re: How long will/did you stay?

  • I'm having an RCS, and have to do a mandatory 2 nights (at least) in the hospital. As long as LO and I are both cleared to leave at the same time, I'll go whenever we're cleared.

With DD1, I was cleared after 48 hours, but the on-call ped wouldn't clear her. So I stayed an extra night with her.

With my DD I stayed 3 nights (had her late on a Sunday by c/s, went home Wednesday afternoon), but she had weight gain issues and jaundice.

This time if I am able to have a VBAC I'm hoping no more than 24h but it will depend on if this LO has jaundice as well (likely since DH & I both had it as newborns and DD had it), weight gain issues and is clear from the GBS+.  If I have a RCS I know I'll be there at least 48h maybe longer due to all of the above.

  • Last time I stayed 3nights and 2 days after baby was born (6pm ecs). This time I'm hopeful to be out by day 2 (7am RCS) I hate the hospital and can't relax at all. I do better in my own environment.

  • The goal was to leave ASAP, ending up having some heavy bleeding and having to stay 2 nights for monitoring. If all goes well at the birth center this time we will be sent home within 12hrs of delivery.

  • I had DS at 11am on a Monday and was home for lunch the next day. I was ready to get home. May be willing to stay a little longer this time...

  • My RCS is Monday. She said preferred to leave is Thursday, if I'm antsy I can leave Wednesday, and if I'm not doing well I can leave Friday. Planning on leaving Thursday.

  • I'm hoping to only stay one night if everybody's doing well. The hospital bed was so awful for my back last time I ended up laying on the visitor pull out.

I think my insurance pays (not oasis, WTF spell check? ) for 2 to 3 nights depending on the delivery/complications. I'm planning on staying the two nights...I was kicked out of the birth center after 12 hours last time (policy) and it was rough that first night at home!

With DS, he was born at 4:22AM on Friday morning and we were discharged at about 1PM on Saturday.  While some ladies hate the hospital stay, I loved it.  I got to sit there and snuggle my baby, watch TV, people brought me food, there were nurses to help, etc.  I am actually looking forward to it, again.  Plus, the time I'm in the hospital is time that I don't have to deal with DS AND a NB at the same time.  That is my biggest fear.

this is exactly how I am feeling !!

  • As a FTM, I have no idea.  However long my doctor and the pediatrician say.  I definitely want to have the nurses go over things like breastfeeding, diapering (especially in regards to anything special to do with the cord stump), or any other crazy problematic scenarios I come up with.  Anything to help make me feel more confident.

  • DD1 was a morning baby and you can go 6 hours after the birth if you want, so long as you and baby are checked over and both ok.
I was ready to go straight away (detest hospitals) but was forced to stay overnight after I bled a lot then the staff messed about all the next morning so I didn't get home til mid-afternoon the following day. I hated it and wanted to be home the entire time which I said before I'd even had her. There's no way I'd stay in a hospital longer than I had to unless I was unconscious/sedated.

This time, it's a birth centre and they let you go from 2 hours after if everyone's ok, as long as you feel ready, with the option of an overnight for evening/night births but you go as soon as you sensibly can after birth and a rest which is perfect.

I get why some Moms want to stay longer and have the rest/support but I'd rather be at home.

I personally would like to leave as soon as possible. I will definitely try to be out of there within 24 hours if they will release both if us.
  • Last time around I had a Monday afternoon emergency c-section, and left the hospital after 3 nights, Thursday midday.  I expect to do 3 or 4 nights for my RCS this time around.

  • Our birth center is awesome-- with private, huge labor/delivery rooms and private recovery rooms, so I know our stay will be pleasant. We have to stay a minimum of 24 hours, but I'm hoping to head home soon after that. I'm kind of a homebody, and I know we'll all be more comfortable in our own space.

I was induced with DD, so I stayed 3 nights, because the first night was part of the induction.

If DD had been born earlier the following day (she was born at 9:39pm), I probably would have only been required to stay 2.

I was happy to get out of there.  Even a newborn waking to nurse was less exhausting than nurses coming in and out every 45 minutes.

  • Two midnights once baby is here. I'm staying as long as they'll let me. Good food. Comfy double bed that I literally never have to get out of except to pee. Time to relax. Can't wait! It'll be a mini vacation. I hope she's born past midnight so I can get two real nights out of this experience.

  • I stayed the full time last time and really regretted it. I felt a million times more comfortable at home. I plan on leaving as soon as possible this time around. For my sake, and for DD's sake, who I know will be so thrown off without me putting her to bed  :((

  • 48 hours from the time DD is born. There is a state test that has to be done on DD no sooner than 48 hours after she is born, so they usually keep mom and baby until 48 hours is up. With DS he was born at 11:25am on Thursday and was discharged Saturday afternoon around 1 or so. DS was tongue tied and the on call pedi snipped his tongue tie before discharging DS.

  • I stayed 4 nights at OB's recommendation last time. Looking at 3-4 with the RCS, and I too an looking forward to having the full length of time recommended to recover and bond, as DH will be in and out with DS.

  • At my hospital it's generally 1-2 nights for vaginal birth, 2-3 nights for a c-section. It really depends on how it went and what time baby was born. I have no idea how I'll feel, or if I'll be antsy to go home or not, but the hospital is so nice, and the staff has been so good that I'm guessing I'll want to stay where all the nice helpful people are.
  • 2 days vaginal, 3 days for a c section. So I'm hoping for 2 days obviously!

It depends on when the baby is born. I was in the hosp from M - F with DD, but that's because my water broke Monday and she wasn't born until Wed early AM. If baby is born before midnight, you get that night and one more (so 11:59PM Tuesday, you'd stay Wed & be released Thurs AM) but after Midnight, so 12:01 Wed, you'd be released Fri AM. This time I'm hoping to get out ASAP provided everything / everyone is ok, to get home to DD1 and start our fam of 4.

  • Insurance company told me that we are able to stay 48 hrs for regular birth and 96 hrs for c-section. FTM so I have no clue if I will want to leave as soon as I can or stay and be waited on as long as I can :)
  • I stayed 2 nights. We checked in at 5 am on a Sunday and left Tues evening with DS. We had to wait for his PKU results to come back and for some reason they took forever! I will prob do the same with LO this time! I never can get a good nights sleep if I'm not in my own bed

All I know is the minimum for vaginal birth is 24 hours after the birth, 48 hours for c-section. I think I will be more comfortable at home (mostly bc I hate IV's and monitors), but I'm just going to see how healthy everyone is and what the OB recommends.

You're not usually on IVs and monitors after you deliver. I actually had my hemlock removed completely about 6 hours after the birth. Essentially, once they determined I wasn't going to need any IV meds.

  • My OB said 2-3 night for a c/a is standard for their patients. My Insurance will cover up to 5, though, so I guess if things aren't going smoothly I could stay for longer.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Our hospital requires a 48-hour stay for FTMs.

  • Hummm I'm not sure? I will go in the camp of whatever they decide I need. But being a FTM I will stay as long as they will let me. I like having the reassurance that there are many experienced professionals around me JIC.

  • I stayed 5 nights the first time - I'm SO glad I did too. If you are bfing at least try to stay til your milk comes in - that night is the WORST! My dd was SO unsettled that night that they ended up putting her in the nursery for a few hours so I could rest. I'm hoping to stay 3 or so nights this time, just til the milk comes in!!
  • I don't know what the requirements are but I had baby boy at 313 on Monday morning and left the hospital right after dinner.

  • I absolutely loved my hospital stay after I had DS. The staff was amazing. I was very comfortable. It was essentially a vacay for me, especially in the A/C as it was super hot that summer. And the food, omg yum! We get a celebratory meal for me and DH too complete with apple cider.

But DS was born at 10:30 pm. You stay at least 24 hours after vaginal delivery as long as there are no complications. Because I had him so late I had an extra night and should have been released the following morning but DS was getting circumcised and the pediatrician got caught up with a busy morning so the procedure didn't happen until the afternoon and we were released that evening on the third day.

I doubt I will be as "lucky" this time around and will probably get a 24 hour stay which is fine as long as DD is healthy and ready.

  • At first I wanted to leave ASAP, but now that I've toured L&D and seen how crazy nice it is, I want to stay as long as they'll let me! It occurred to me too that it will be nice to let myself get rested when there's nurses to help with the baby so when we go home I'm not a total zombie.
