Speech therapy question

My twins are almost 21 months and only clearly say about 6-7 words. They understand
much more than that.  We had them evaluated through the state funded Birth-3 program but they 
did not qualify.  I feel like they would benefit from speech therapy but am not sure what to do next.
At birth they both had an IVH which got better on it's own. I do recall the specialist saying developmental 
delays could be caused from that, so that's always in the back of my mind.  

Does anyone know if speech therapy is usually covered at all through insurance? 
Should I start now with therapy or wait a few more months?

    A lot of insurance companies cover speech therapy.  If they do, it's usually 30 visits/year.  So you would have to weigh how often you would want to take them. If you did 1x/week you could easily start now and make it the whole year on only 30 visits.

    Oftentimes private places will offer a free evaluation to determine what services are needed.  I tend to take these with a grain of salt because they are financially benefiting from these recommendations.

    How long do you have to wait before the state will evaluate them again?

    DS1 was evaluated at about 26 months and didn't qualify but they put us on the follow up list and called for a new evaluation at 31months. The slp suspected apraxia cause he still hadn't had a language explosion. Still in speech but doing well.

    It never hurts to get a second opinion. It's too bad the EI services age out in the US. Here our kids would be seen until the issues are resolved or they start school and the school system takes over.

    Thanks Ladies. I'm not sure when I can get them evaluated again but I will check on that. I plan on also contacting the pediatrician. I hate to wait till they turn 2 if I can possibly start something that will help them sooner.
