Babies: 9 - 12 Months

scarred already?

DD ran into one of her toys about 5-6 weeks ago, while trying to climb under. She cried, but not that bad and it didn't seem too deep or anything. The scab fell off in about a week. Well, now she has what looks like a scar going across her entire nose. Is it a scar already do you think? How long until it should go away if it's not... considering it's already been over a month?!

And here's some drama for you ;) DH asked me just now if we should take her to a plastic surgeon! My initial reaction was no way!  She's a baby, she's going to fall and get hurt and get cuts and bruises and scars all the time.. but now I'm kind of thinking about at least taking her in to see what her pedi says because it is across her entire nose and DH does have a point that do we really want her to forever have a line across the bridge of her nose?? Anywhere else is one thing, but her face? Maybe a dermatologist could suggest vitamin E cream or something to help it fade? Or will it most likely fade w/ time? WDYT? Flame away if you must.. haha :)

Re: scarred already?

  • No flames from me. I wouldn't want DD to have a scar across her nose either. I would just show it to the pedi.  Hopefully it will fade on its own.

  • As a rule, wounds to the face can take up to a year to reach their final appearance as they heal.  At this point, I would let the pedi look at it, but I wouldn't worry too much yet.  Be sure to use plently of sunscreen over the wound if outside.  GL.
  • No flames here. But I do think that baby skin is pretty forgiving. Part of me thinks that it will fade but another part thinks that it might get worse as the skin stretches to accomodate growth. I'd ask the pedi.
  • you should ask your pedi about vitamin e oil, if it is safe for dc.  It is working wonders on the scar I have down the side of my nose from surgery.
  • thanks guys. I'll ask at DD's 12 mo visit..

rlthomas, that's what I worry about.. part of me thinks she's a baby and I'm sure her skin will heal on it's own, especially since it wasn't even that bad of a cut! But then I think what if it stretches and gets worse as she grows...
