Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Genetic testing results- Trisomy 21

My d&c was two weeks ago today- the doctor just called with the genetic testing results.  Our little one was a girl and had Trisomy 21- Down Syndrome.  My OB does not feel like this was likely the reason for our first two losses (at 6 weeks and 5 weeks).  Likely this little one's heart had some sort of developmental issue- which is just so hard to imagine because we saw that little heartbeat going strong twice on early ultrasounds and heard it on the home doppler at 9 weeks.  When I asked what the chances are of having another baby with Trisomy 21, she did say that our chances were increased for future pregnancies.  Our next step is to go back to the RE we were seeing before this loss.  The OB is going to contact a genetic counselor to see if we should be seen there, too.

Even though this is potentially an answer (it's impossible to tell if Trisomy was the only factor contributing to the miscarriage), it leaves me with many additional questions.  What are the chances of having a healthy pregnancy after having three miscarriages in a row?  It can't just be "bad luck" to have three unhealthy eggs in a row?  Is it worth it to do genetic testing on my husband and I?

Thank you in advance for sharing any experience you've had with genetic testing, Trisomy results, etc.  I'm trying to avoid the Google searching that will likely only contribute to irrational fears and more questions.  I've learned that in addition to my doctors, the ladies here are my best resource for support and advice.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I would suggest seeking a referral to see an RE for repeat pregnancy loss. The amount of generic testing you want to do is a personal choice, but hopefully getting in contact with a generic counselor will be a huge help.
