Ugh :(

It's 4am. We're in a hotel for the night on the road home from visiting family, and DS started puking just a bit ago. Every. Few. Minutes.

Grandma got sick one day we were there, and I kept my distance, but I let her hold/hug/kiss DS anyway because I would have felt so mean asking her to keep her distance from DS since we only see them a few times a year, and I didn't want to be "that DIL" (the other grandkids were there too). I wish she had used better grandma judgment. I worried about it at the time but decided to cross my fingers that we would be fine. Ugh!!! Trying not to be mad. It's just as much my fault for allowing the interaction.

How do you avoid a stomach bug when you're snuggling a sick 2yo (easy...you don't)? Have any of you ladies battled a stomach bug while pregnant? Planning to call my doctor tomorrow to let them know it's in my house and ask what I should do if/when I get sick, but if you have been violently ill while pregnant, what did you do to keep baby safe?

ETA: We plan to strip the bed and leave the soiled sheets and towels stuffed in the bathroom trash bag (unused). We'll tell the front desk at checkout, but is there anything else we need to do besides leaving an enormous tip for housekeeping? :/

  • Oh my goodness that does not sound fun. I really hope you do not catch it also and that your poor little DS feels better. I have had the stomach flu twice since being pregnant and I suggest to make sure you are well hydrated in case you do catch it. That's going to be the thing that makes you feel the worst is the dehydration.

  • Awww, that's so inconsiderate of grandma. I just got a nasty cold that my family made no effort to keep to themselves=gave it to the kids=gave it to me.
To answer your question, unfortunately you've already been exposed and there's really no avoiding it. I tried everything to avoid a stomach bug earlier during this pregnancy while caring for my boys, but got it anyway. I'm a nurse and go crazy on the hand washing and disinfecting, but to no avail. Wash your hands and pray. FX!

  • I had a stomach virus a few weeks ago. I tried to sleep as much as possible. When I wasn't sleeping I was laying on the couch resting and just let ds watch shows. I also just tried to push fluids. Even if it felt like I would be sick or whatever I just tried to keep putting water in my system to help combat dehydration. Also I ate watermelon. Light and full of water.

  • I had the stomach flu twice when pregnant with DD. If you get it keep hydrated. Hope DS is better soon and you can avoid getting it.

  • I had a bad stomach bug with my last pregnancy and it was pretty miserable.  I kept trying to stay hydrated but everything I put in my body came back up.  Ultimately, my OB instructed me to go to the hospital for an IV and Zofran, and things got better from there.  Definitely try to push the fluids if you can, and don't be afraid to go the IV route if you need to.  Fingers crossed you're able to dodge it or end up with a comparatively mild case!!

  • I had the GI crap a few weeks ago. OB put me on Pedilyte for the next few days and a script for sapatories for the upset stomach. I was not able to hold anything down. So call your doctor and see if they would be willing to write a script in case you get it. Drink lots and lots of fluids. Take care and hope it passes quickly.

  • DS had a stomach bug 2 weeks ago and I was able to avoid getting it. Lots of handwashing for both me and him (even though it's almost pointless for LOs) and hand sanitizer all day long. And some luck.

  • Sorry your little guy is sick!  I only have anecdotal advice, but it might help.  We went to visit family over Memorial Day weekend and DS got sick...vomiting every half hour.  It only lasted about 6 hours and then he was wiped out the rest of the weekend.  I tried to clean up after him, but of course, got projectile vomit right in the face.  Sure enough, between that and my "quiet" pregnant immune system I had the same symptoms about 12 hours later, along with bloody diarrhea.  It happened at night and I figured if it only lasted a short time, I'd be alright.  It only lasted about 6 hours too, and I'd say after 12 hours I could keep fluids down.  I was worried about the baby, but I figured as long as I could rehydrate myself again, he'd be OK.  And he was:).  My sister also told me she had a similar illness when she was pregnant and got through it just fine.  So, I hope you don't get sick, but if you do, these little babies are pretty tough...at least for a short illness!
  • Thanks, ladies! We just got home (I don't recommend 5.5 hours in the car with a puking toddler to anyone!), and so far I'm ok, just tired. DH is feeling sick, though.

  • Ugh, that's awful! My three year old got sick while we were on a trip when I was about 8 weeks along. A puking child in a hotel room is the worst! The smell was awful. The hotel was very accommodating and brought us up new sheets and garbage bags several times. They also brought us up bottles of water and ginger ale without us asking. I did end up getting it despite my best efforts to avoid it but luckily it wasn't until after we were home. Hope you don't get it but if you do just focus on staying hydrated.

  • I had Norovirus this pregnancy. It was the worst stomach bug I have had in my entire like. It started at my sons daycare. One mom thought her husband had food poisioning so she sent her daughter. Her daughter became sick that day. Everyone at the daycare got it. Every single kid! DS gave it to both me and DH. I made sure to drink lots of fluids, even though the first 12 hours it was impossible to keep them down. I still drank every second I could in hopes of keeping some fluids in me.

Good Luck! I hope you don't catch it!

  • Oh, that is a big UGH. I'm sorry. The worst of it may be over, but I have another prevention strategy that may be helpful: avoid touching your own mouth/face for any reason, unless it's to eat, and only eat when the very last thing you have done is scrubbed your hands well. Stomach bugs can only get in through your mouth, so if you're very fastidious about keeping your hands and your son's hands away from your mouth, the bug can't get in.

My son suffered from this a couple of months ago, puked everywhere including all over me, and I still avoided catching it. After he stopped vomiting, I sanitized the house with bleach, including places like doorknobs, sinks, faucets, and light switches.

I hope your little guy and your husband feel better soon!
