edited June 2014 in September 2014 Moms
This check-in is for anyone with Gestational Diabetes or those who have blood sugar levels that are high or low and could use the extra support. Check-in is posted on Tuesdays.

Keep in mind that any info shared here isn't meant to be medical advice and if you plan on changing something to run it by your Dr. first-as most of these posts go with the bump!

I've seen a few helpful links posted here in the last week since being diagnosed and I found them extremely helpful!

 https://community.babycenter.com/post/a46582366/new_to_gd_quick_reference

Also, through my stalking on TB, I found there is an actual GD group-I haven't checked it out yet, but here is the link:

https://forums.thebump.com/group/271-gestational-diabetes

Now the questions-

How far along are you?

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?

I am going to tag the people from the original post and will keep tagging you weekly, unless you tell me not too =).

Re: ~Gestational Diabetes Check In-6/24~

  • How far along are you? 26 Weeks, 5 days

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Seeing a dietician/nurse today-I am assuming diet first. Exercise isn't an option as any walking gives me contractions....

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? I have an appointment this afternoon to learn all about GD. I have SO many questions to ask.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  Still just trying to figure everything out. I will have to see what they recommend today and go from there. It feels like a huge learning curve!

    I'm 28w 4d

I'm on NPH at night and humalog with breakfast and lunch, as well as watching carbs.

I have the first OB appt on Friday since being diagnosed with GDM and I will learn about what further testing I will need. I meet with the dietician Thursday. I fax my numbers weekly to the DM nurse who calls me with suggestions or insulin changes.

I'm struggling with what to eat in between meals and snacks if I get hungry. I have been doing nuts or cheese but they are so high in fat that I am nervous about being unhealthy.

How far along are you? 30 weeks today! :D

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): diet for now

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? 30 week appt Friday

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? My only issue is my morning numbers. I can't get those down for anything! I can get them "lower" but they are still too high. My other numbers throughout the day are awesome and right on target! Just my fasting is a smidge high and no matter what I eat for breakfast it always seems to be about 40-50 higher than my AM fasting #.

  • Thanks for starting this up @suitern!

How far along are you? Im 26.5 weeks.  I was diagnoised at 14 weeks so Ive been dealing with this for a bit!

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Right now its diet as well as 2.5 of Glyburide before dinner.   My after lunch numbers have been high so Im going to start trying to do a 10/15 min walk after lunch to see if that helps.  If not, MFM is giving me a week or 2 to make sure Im not having numbers over 125 otherwise they want me to start taking meds with lunch as well.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?  I have my 28 week (though Ill be 29 weeks) appointment with my OB on the 10th. Then on the 11th we have a fetal echocardiogram as well as a growth U/S.  We go once a month for growth u/s and starting at 30 weeks a believe, Ill have to go to MFM to also have them monitor the baby for growth and breathing etc once or twice a week.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?

For those moms who are having a hard time with morning fasting numbers...what Ive found that works for me is to have an evening snack about an hour before bed that is not only high in protein but also has some carbs in it (say less than 24g)  Honestly what has worked best for me surprisingly....a half cup of ice cream!  My fasting numbers are very rarely over 100.  What else has been good snack wise is a slice of toast with peanut butter and a half glass of milk.  Or a cheese stick and handful of grapes.

Thanks for the snack ideas! i tried the ice cream last night and my number was 99 this morning, which is lower but still not low enough. I guess I should try something with more carbs? I'm afraid because I've learned that breads of any kind send my BS through the ROOF.

  • Now the questions-

How far along are you?  29 weeks (30 tomorrow)

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): right now just diet, but we will see what the DM says tomorrow.

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? Tomorrow I meet with my ob and I also meet with the dietitian.  I am definitely interested in seeing my ob, since this will be the first time since the diagnosis so I am curious how the rest of my pregnancy will play out.  The dietitian will also determine if diet is ok, or if I need to go on meds or meet with a mfm.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I am struggling with my morning fasting numbers, they want them to be below 90 and I am regularly in the 90s.  I have found a half a cup of cottage cheese and some fruit before bedtime helps my numbers in the morning.

  • Ok - something else I am having a hard time with is that with every new person I read about having GD it seems their # goals are different? "I have to be below 140 an hour after eating." "I have to be below 120 an hour after eating." "Oh mine has to be below 130." WTF? Which is it? i would think if they are going to tell me that I have GD that doctors could at least agree on where people need to be? (BTW - can't get into a dietician until the end of July so that's why I'm not asking them.)

  • Good morning!

    I hit 26w yesterday.

Right now I am diet controlled but have been having a harder time with my fasting numbers. This is my second time with gd and far more difficult to manage.

I don't have any scheduled appointments until 7/7 for my 28 week OB but I'm going to call and have my nutritionist look at my levels so I may be in sooner. I also had a growth scan last week because this little guy is measuring in the 14-24 percentile and that will continue every month until he's here.

I'm struggling with having to continue all of this testing and monitoring! I was diagnosed early due to history and it just gets annoying at times. Things are changing and it's hard to figure out what works for me all over again. Oh well only 12-14 weeks left.
  • How far along are you? I'll be 30 weeks tomorrow

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication):  Diet/exercise right now

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? Have a Childbirth class tonight and Thursday night, and my weekly visit with my OB tomorrow.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  My after dinner numbers were reading kind of high the last couple of weeks, but this weekend, all of my numbers were on target.  The only difference was that I was on a day schedule instead of my normal night schedule.  So what I think might be throwing my #s off is night shift.  I switch back in a couple of weeks, so hopefully that will level things out.  Or it could completely throw things off, I don't know.  I'll have to wait and see.

What do they want to keep your fasting under?  As long as mine is under 100 Im find with that.  LOL if I saw 99 Id be satisfied ;-)

Today mine was 80 after ice cream last night.  For me Fasting and after breakfast are usually the only 2 I dont have to worry about.

I agree!  I think it all depends on your doctor. For me they want my fasting under 100, and 2 hrs after meals to be under 120.   Ive read a lot of research though that said that alot of drs are now ok with numbers in the 130's and 140s as 120 seems sort of out of reach.

One nice thing for me is that right now Im alread y15lbs down for this pregnancy and my baby seems to be healthy and growing nice and slow and steady.

@mrsH1112 - to answer both of your comments/questions....

My fasting should be under 95 - which it's only been once since I started this last week. I'm supposed to take mine 1 hour after meals and should be at or below 130. My dinners are usually around 130-140, with the occasional 120 something. My lunches are always between 100-130. My breakfast reading is almost ALWAYS over 150, even though everything I'm eating is "what I should be eating." I tried the ice cream last night and it worked a little, but not enough, so I'm thinking I might put some hot fudge on it tonight, lol. j/k (well..maybe...)

I agree that 120 is really low. According to most information given to my Dad's family (all diabetic, except me and 1 cousin) anything under 180 isn't even considered "diabetic" but pre-diabetic and anything under 140 is fine.

  • I wish all of the numbers were more standard! I am in the fasting under 95, 1 hr after meals under 140 range. My fasting have been hovering around 101ish for a few days and I was worried but some of you are under 100 fasting? So many different scales out there!

I have only been under 100 fasting a couple of times and those are the times where I ate a popsicle right before i went to bed. Otherwise, it would climb daily, 102 - 104 - 106.

The rest of my meals seem pretty fine regardless, although my lunch today was a little disturbing. I had a 1 hour # of 90. That can't be right, can it? I had a mixed bean salad with avocado, red leaf lettuc and cilantro, lime juice and vinegar. Sugar free jello cup for dessert. I just thought it was ridiculously low (although my lunchtime ones always seem to be low (i.e. 90-120) no matter what.)

  • That may very well be accurate after a meal. It looks like you had very little, if any, carb count. I have actually had numbers go down after meals because of low carb and high protein and veggie meals like grilled chicken and Brussel sprouts.

Thanks @suitern‌ for the check-in! How far along are you? 29 weeks today! Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): Diet / exercise right now Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? No appointment until 7/7 Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? My blood sugar seems to be really good as long as I don't eat certain things like pizza and really sugary stuff. My fasting numbers seem to be the problem, although they are usually in the high 80s ( my doctor wants them < 90). But at my last appointment, the doctor said they wanted them in the high 70s and low 80s. WTH??? I thought I was doing good as long as it was < 90. I really don't want to be on medication if I can help it. One more question - when my doctor outlined the diet for me, they said I shouldn't have certain foods at certain times. For example, they said I shouldn't have fruit at breakfast and no fruit or dairy at my bedtime snack. Anyone else have their doctor or dietician tell them something like this? I decided to have a banana with breakfast the other day and my reading was fine. Do you think it's ok to eat the fruit as long as my numbers are ok? I just hate to restrict my fruit intake when I love it so much and it's obviously healthy right? I feel so lost sometimes and hate to call the doctor all the time, although I do for the important stuff!

How far along are you? 30 weeks

Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): As of right now, just diet and exercise (which my feet are so swollen and I'm having a hard time with)

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week?  I see my dietitian again next Tuesday to go over my numbers from the first week and a half.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share?  I'm struggling with my fasting number.  It is almost always over 100. Doc told me to eat between 30-45 grams of carbs for breakfast, the other day I only had 7, and I was still over.  Also, are you guys testing an hour after you start eating , or finish eating?

  • Wanted to ask you guys.....a friend told me that drinking a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed, helps break down the sugar and give you lower morning numbers.  Has anyone heard anything similar?  Also, I've read that unpasturized apple cider vinegar is a no no during pregnancy, but I'm assuming pasturized is ok.  Any info you might have would be appreciated.  I just do not want to go on meds!!!

If you don't eat enough carbs, your blood sugar will go up...the liver will dump
Glucose into the bloodstream if not enough carbs are eaten, so be careful if you limit carbs. You should be eating what the MD or dietician sets out for you.

    Management Method (diet/exercise or insulin/other medication): diet/exercise

Any upcoming appointments/tests (growth u/s, NST, etc) in the next week? Meeting with my dietician this friday.

Anything you are struggling with or need help with? I struggle with my fasting and breakfast numbers. I eat at about 10:30 and test at about 6:15ish. I have tried eating 1 piece of whole wheat toast with pb, and 2 pieces of toast. I tried ice cream-1/2 cup and 1 cup (I am allergic to milk though and this made me sick after the third night) and an apple with pb. My numbers have been between 95 and 105 (my doc wants them under 90). I really am out of ideas to try. I can handle some milk/cheese but not always and of course when that makes me sick my numbers get even more out of whack.

Any questions? Anything working well you'd like to share? I always walk for 10 to 15 minutes after meals. This has really helped my lunch and dinner numbers  (my breakfast numbers I am still trying to figure out what I can and can not eat).

  • Woah just catching up with all of this! My appointment today was eye opening and an information overload! I am to test my sugars 4 times per day, fasting and after meals. They said they wanted my fasting below 100 and meals below 120. I am going to just do diet for 2 weeks and then head back to see if I need to go on meds...I hope not.

The most upsetting thing today was finding out that I will for sure be induced at 39 weeks due to GD. I really want a med free birth and I know an induction makes that pretty hard!

I will have to read all of this in the morning when I have had some sleep =). Glad we have a nice little supporitve community!

You might want to show some research that induction early doesn't have any better outcomes. GD moms are actually at risk for having underdeveloped lungs in their babies so the longer they are in the better. If you can control your numbers I would definitely discuss this with your dr.

  • You can still have med free birth. I did with my last lo even being induced and wanting an epidural but it was a horror story trying to put it in and only took on my right leg so from my right thigh up was completely unmedicated. The key to inductions is that they start at a tiny, tiny dose and then increase very slowly so that your contractions don't take off fast and close. I was 39w4d at induction. If there isn't any cause for induction before 40w, maybe they will let you postpone with diet control and average size baby. This time I'm suspecting another induction but not for gd.
  • Do you guys know what the risks or side effects of insulin are for baby?
  • epaprnepaprn member
Insulin doesn't cross the placenta to the baby...the risk is that high blood sugars for the mother would cause increased growth in the baby and put the baby at risk for hypoglycemia at birth since their little pancreas has to work in utero to make their own blood sugar go down.

I am secretly hoping that I will go at 38 weeks again like I did with DS. All the PTL issues make it hard to say what in the world is going on with my delivery. The Dr. seemed pretty confident I wouldn't need to be induced based on my history.  I also don't want an epidural for similar reasons as you, my experience last time wasn't that amazing.

  • I'm currently 29 weeks and was just diagnosed 1-2 weeks ago. I was told to alter my diet & exercise however my fasting numbers seem to be around 90-95 the past few days. Any suggestions for night time snack? About how long after your last bite are you testing for your fast?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Last night I had 6 oz. of prune juice (yum right lol?) and a few crackers-I am aiming for 2 carb servings for my evening snack. I had that at 9 pm and then tested sugar levels at 8 AM this morning. My reading was 77.

I will have to try upping the carbs with my bedtime snack. When I don't have a bts at all, my BS is over 100. If I have something like ice cream, then it's below 100 but still too high. Last night, instead of having just a scoop of ice cream I had one of those drumstick cone things and my BS this morning was 90. So I'm thinking I might try the whole peanut butter and toast/bread, or crackers or something like that to see if I can get it any lower. Good news was that my breakfast was 116, which is the lowest it has been since I started!

My diabetes RN told me to make sure I'm fasting at least 8 hours overnight, anything less can make the number higher. I do better with ice cream and nuts or graham crackers and PB than with cheese and crackers

  • For sure bummed...I had Chinese for lunch, it was stirfried, not breadded or fried, and I didnt have any rice.  Thought Id be doing pretty good, my number 2 hrs after was 135.  Im crossing Chinese off the list I think.  Its got to be cornstarch or some sort of thickening agent that must have made my number spike.

Either that or next time Im walking for a half hour after eating it.

This makes me super sad! I LOVE chinese but I am nervous to try it for this reason. Was it in a sauce? My nurse yesterday said to avoid sauce stuff because often it is packed full of sugars =(.

I've heard that Chinese food is pretty bad. Most of it is the sauce (corn starch and sugar). I know it's no China buffet, but sometimes I will get the Healthy choice steamer meals for lunch at work, and they have Chinese-esque dishes that are pretty tasty and my BS is always on target an hour after I eat them. I know it's not the "healthiest" but neither is China Buffet, lol. :p  Could be a way for you to get at least a taste of it?

  • The sauce was a brown sauce...I cook Asian at home quite a bit so Im assuming it was mainly soy sauce or oyster sauce based, but the consistancey of it for sure made me think there was probably corn starch thickened.

The Healthy Choice option is at least an option, or just make my own, or just skip it till I have the baby :-( haha.

I have to track my numbers and send them to Maternal Fetal Medicine everyweek.  I almost thought about lying about the number so they didnt get on me and try and push me to start taking more meds

  • I had g.d. last time and I am 6 days past my 3 hour test and have heard nothing...but I am still thinking I have it and my OB office is just not on the ball...c'mon...

Last time, the only foods that would really mess me up were Chinese food and regular pizza.  I avoided breads, sweets, and soda to be safe, but when I did have some, I didn't go up.  Eating no carbs at breakfast and more carbs before bed works for a lot of people.  Also, fasting should be 8-10 hours for most people--longer, and you can go up.
  • The overall stress of this doesn't help our numbers either..I've tried not thinking about it as much but that doesn't seem to help every time i see a higher than normal number it upsets me.  foods that worked before are no longer working i truly believe stress is one of the overall factors .

  • 30w yesterday... I had a test at 20 weeks since I'm overweight and it came back normal at 109. At 28 weeks test came back elevated and this week I failed my 3 hour test. I'm back at the doctor to meet with the nurse and start going over what I have to do. My work is going to love that I have to come to the doctor even more often now. I had one last cheat lunch today (pizza! And salad) since that's what hubby had already gotten for lunch when I found out. Glad to know we have each other for support!

I finally had my OB appt yesterday - first since diagnosed. My GDM is managed by an endocrinologist. The OB put a lot of my fears to rest specifically about the health of the baby. I have another regular appt in 2 weeks and then I start having appts twice per week - a NST and u/S to measure growth and fluid levels and another NST weekly!
