Have to retake glucose test-WWYD?

I took the 1 hour test early ( 20 weeks) and failed so took the 3 hour test and passed. The dr wants me to retake the test at 28 weeks but said it was up to me if I want to do the 1 hr or 3 hr one....I'm torn! If I fail the 1 hour test I'll have to take the 3 hour anyway...This may be a long shot but when I took the 1 hour I had fasted and apparently didn't have to. Think it might make a difference if I have a high protein breakfast before the one hr? Would you take the risk and do the 1 hr with the chance you make have to so the 3 hour anyway, or would you say screw it and just go straight to the 3 hour?? Thanks!

Re: Have to retake glucose test-WWYD?

  • I would probably go to the 3 hour if you have a better chance at passing it and not having to take the test 2 more times.

Of course I still haven't taken mine so I don't know what I'm talking about!

Good luck to you whichever test you choose.

  • I ended up failing both early, but my OB did say that if I passed, she would retest me on that test at 28 weeks.  So, if I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour, then she would have skipped the 1 hour and went straight to the 3 hour at 28 weeks.

  • Hmm, seems unanimous. Guess I'll just suck it up and go straight to 3. I'm such a baby :( lol....hate getting the blood drawn 4 times...oh well. Thanks everyone!

  • I'm in the same situation. I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour at 20 weeks but one of my readings was high on the last test so I'm going to have to so the 3 hour test again at 28 weeks. Not looking forward to it either.

  • Definitely the 3 hour! The 1 hour is very sensitve and that is why a good number of people fail it and then end up passing the 3 hour.

  • My OB only offers a 2 hour. If you pass, you pass. If you fail, you fail... it doesn't require a 2nd test. Maybe you could meet in the middle and do a 2 hour if it's offered?
  • I took my one hour  near my 12w mark and failed but passed the 3 hour. My OB also informed me I was doing the 1 hour again next week.

I WISH I COULD JUST SKIP TO THE 3 HOUR~

  • With the 3 hour, I think you just need to pass 2 out of the 3 post glucose drink blood draws.  So depending on how your body processes, that might be easier to pass.

  • I'm in the same boat as you, but my doctor doesn't offer me the option though so I will do the one-hour test again. She did say that if my results were really high, they will just automatically treat me for GD and I wouldn't have to do the three-hour again. I'm ok with that. I have small/bad veins and sensitive skin; the three-hour test was horrible. I still have a red blotch on my arm from all the taping that day and it was more than a month ago! Guess I should get used to it though...

How badly did you fail the 1 hour? I personally hate the 3 hour test - if I had failed my 1 hour, I wouldn't have taken the 3 hour and just acted as if I had GD.

  • Think I got a 170 something on the one hour. I had fasted too. I probably should've just put myself on a GD diet but I really needed some sort of planned diet. I had a hard time trying to figure something out on my own without a nutritionist...

With that sort of reading on the one hour, I would go straight to the 3 hour test for your next test. Fasting could have hurt you rather than helped but even so, that high a reading would be a red flag which is likely why they want you to test again.

I would also start watching your carb intake - when I had GD with my son, I followed the following carb intakes - 30g for breakfast, 15g mid day snack, 60g lunch, 15g mid day snack, 45g dinner and 15g late night snack. Eat lots of protein and less carbs. Also avoid refined carbs like white rice, white bread etc. - switch to brown rice, whole wheat bread. I replaced regular yogurt with Greek yogurt and regular milk for light soy milk. There is a weekly GD check in on this board where people post recipes, ideas so you can check that out too.

  • Thanks for the info. I'll definitely try harder to eat right. Seems like the high carb foods are so much more accessible and quicker to eat..so I reach for those first.
